The Retrievers are going to open Marquette's new home (the Milwaukee Bucks new arena, the Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center) on Nov. 6. And they are looking for one more road, one-way (no return) high-profile game.

Hello, UMBC.

Have some patience, FFS.

This CAN'T be a trap! The NCAA has NEVER lied before and it never will ;)

Brilliant scheduling. They'll have some name recognition from the massive upset, but we should pound them since they lose a couple key contributors and it's the arena opener. Also Wojo's from the area so a sentimental tie there.

Dig at Tony Bennett too?

GGGG

Why would they dig at Tony Bennett?

This worked out simply because of mutual interest and availability.  Don't reach too much into it.

I'm calling it GREAT news.  Both opponent and timing.  Three nights later chick and I will be at my goddaughters wedding in Detroit.  I was pretty sure I was going to have convince chick that the exhibition game 'counted' somehow.  Either that or overpay for Bucks tickets.  Off the hook.   ;D

New era, that the NCAA changed that you can start the season on the 2nd Tuesday. Pretty jacked that it's UMBC.

I'd call this a home run for the opener. Not too many cupcakes that people see the name and get excited about it.

My son's school (Elon) is also starting play in a new arena next year.  They went a decidedly different route for their home opener:  UNC.  I guess when you're the cupcake, you can't really schedule a cupcake for the first game in your new arena.  So, you pick a high profile team for the privilege of being the first to stomp you on your new home court.  It's the first time UNC has gone to Elon since 1950.  The article I saw doesn't mention whether Elon has to reciprocate, or whether UNC is just doing them a favor to open the new facility.

Weird enough in the case of MU. Back to back years, we are getting jazzy about the American East Conference. Vermont and now UMBC.

I love how North Carolina schedules. Absolutely love, love, love it. Wish we could emulate their style. Roy is the coach I most admire when it comes to cupcake scheduling.

Home Run? Is anyone actually excited about UMBC?

I honestly forgot they upset Virginia. I can't imagine this is going to cause an increase in people coming to the game.

Moreso than Chicago state or any other blah team.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

I think people will be excited to attend the first game at the new arena. In regards to ticket sales, I doubt it matters who they play, unless it was some team like ND.

The marketing department (if they're worth their weight in geldings) will make sure you remember when it's time to buy tickets.

As a buy-game?  Yes.

I understand the desire to open against a big-name team, but I also understand Wojo's desire to open up with a more beatable opponent.

Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

It's a home run considering the circumstance. They want a certain win, but also want a name that will attract some attention. UMBC loses 3 seniors and this should be a comfortable win. But they have more name recognition than the average buy team thanks to the UVA win and will likely still be a 20+ win team, which is great for any buy game.

It's not Buffalo or Vermont, but being the first team to play them after their historic tourney run and playing a team that should be a nice resume piece (150-200 range) is pretty much ideal.

They should have opened with Wisconsin.  A big-name team and one who is also highly beatable.

Whitefish Bay's, Joe Sherburne is back for UMBC. Pretty cool for that kid to play MU at the new arena.
