They should have opened with Wisconsin.  A big-name team and one who is also highly beatable.

I love this!  We should do this every year with whomever is the Cinderella from the prior tourney.  Would have been fun a couple years ago to have FGCU come play our opener.  But nonetheless, U Must Be Cinderella is coming to MU!  Love it!

Depends on the Cinderella.  I would not want to play Loyola.

They'll probably be about as good as Buffalo next year and we're playing them

Sounds like Loyola will open up at Northwestern's re-done arena.

The marketing department (if they're worth their weight in geldings) will make sure you remember when it's time to buy tickets.

As a buy-game?  Yes.

I understand the desire to open against a big-name team, but I also understand Wojo's desire to open up with a more beatable opponent.
As a buy game they seem like any of the other 250-350 teams we typically play.  I just don't see why this is a home run - whether it's the opener at the new arena or any other non-conference game.

Now that is a fun season-opening matchup.

I didn't realize that they re-did the Welsh-Ryan arena.  What did they change?  I remember it from going to too many Warren Township graduations there, including my own.

Not entirely sure, but from the view from the football stadium last fall, they had sections of it down to the girders.

Northwestern played all it's home games at the Allstate Arena last season.

I wouldn't say homerun, but UMBC is now a brand name from what happened in March.

Brand name yes, but they lose three starters including Lyles who single handily took them on their run.  MU will destroy them, just as they have in the past.

It's a good opener, and a good buy game. Most college basketball fans will know exactly who they are, and more casual fans will be reminded by the media and the marketers.

What! There is a hole in the roof at the new arena?

Whole thing was stripped down to basically nothing. I thought it was a two year renovation though. Believe they are still at Allstate for one more season.

Why is it a good buy game?  (for the record - I've got no issue with it, I just don't think it's anything special.)

UWM gets you both marketing and beatable.  Good for Milwaukee.

I am completely confused as to why you do not think this is a better than usual season opener.  Even casual fans love March madness and big upsets and there were none bigger than their upset of Virginia.  So if you don't get why this is better than playing a similar level team that ISN'T coming off a huge upset of the number one seed in the tournament, then I am not sure what to tell you.  We are not going to be playing a top level team in our season opener, so this is the next best thing.  When I told my girlfriend (a casual basketball fan) who we were playing, she immediately had more interest in the game than she would have if we were playing a team she has never heard of.  So yes, I actually think it is a home run, since Duke or Kansas aren't planning on opening up the new Arena with us.

Watching them beat Virginia was the highlight of the tournament for me. However, I doubt I would of remember who beat Virginia if you had asked me before this thread.

I do think it is a great opening game. I assume the little point guard from Puerto Rico is now gone. He was something to watch.
