Quote from: CreightonWarrior on March 07, 2025, 05:01:54 AMWhen go about once a year and stay at a friend's vacation house in Henderson. Every dinner's going to be approaching $300, can't get out of lunch under $100, and two cocktails are always about $50. Can really only justify it with the fact that I'm not paying for a hotel room.

I went out of my way not to eat on the strip when I could.

Quote from: WarriorFan on March 07, 2025, 12:39:24 AMI've been to vegas twice in the last 6 months for business.  Hotels and rental cars are cheap.  Dining is out of this world expensive.  Had an italian lunch for one at a place on lake las vegas.  Salad and calamari and a glass of wine:  $90.  For one person!!!

Took customers to Delmonico (which by the way was excellent) and there's not a steak under $70... and that's just for the steak... all sides and everything are extra.  Per person it's easily over $200.  Unreal.

vegas used to be cheap.

Dining in a hotel on the strip has been expensive as long as Ive been going there regularly circa 2008.  Outside of the buffets, its never been all that reasonable.  There is still plenty of "cheap" food.  Tons of stuff in downtown Vegas, couple great spots down the outdoor mall outside of the Linq/Harrahs.

I'm not denying that its not nosebleed expensive in a lot of places.  Vegas has become a legit dining destination, there are absolutely incredible meals to be had all over.  The vast majority of offshoots from places like NY/Chicago/LA don't lose a step (my wife said she'd never worry about the headache of trying to get into Carmine's in NY again cause the experience in Vegas is just as good).  But I think a lot of people center their Vegas memory of inexpensive dining in a late 70s/80s viewing lens.

I went to Carmine's in NYC back in October, and I would never go back or consider that food 'good'.

My Zoomer niece wanted to go because she saw it on TikTok.  :-\

Interesting.  Havent been to the NYC location in a decade plus.  Been twice in Vegas post COVID and both were very solid, and I'm not a big Italian food guy at all.  It is a bit scene-y, NYC even more so.

Was at Carmine's NYC 3 weeks ago.  We had a party of 70 and they accommodated us.  Limited menu for us.  Which is a fair trade off.  Based on the limited menu, it was fine, but not life changing.

Interesting to hear the Vegas stories. Last time I went was 2015. We didn't eat at any of the high-end restaurants, but I remember thinking we ate fairly well fairly reasonably. Maybe that's impossible 10 years later?

Before that, I went with a group of guys during the second weekend of the 2014 NCAA tourney. Can't remember which bar it was, but we went two consecutive days/nights and sat there for hours watching games, drinking beer and eating. I remember being pleasantly surprised that I didn't burn through too much $$$.

I think the family size portions throw people off.

I graduated from MU a few decades ago and thinking of taking my son to the NFL draft in GB. Hotels are crazy prices. Any recommendations on other nice cities to stay between GB and Milwaukee for one night. I don't know the difference between Fond du Lac, Manitowac, and Sheboygan. Or any other cities to look into

They're all kinda decent small cities but there's not going to be a lot to do in any of them. Manitowoc obviously gets you closer. Also going up I-43 will be less busy than I-41.

I used to go to Appleton to visit another location of my company.  I know it's close to Green Bay.  There was some weekly Packers show filmed in the downtown hotel I always stayed at.  Downtown had plenty of restaurants and bars.  Houdini lived there.

Fon du Lac has The PressBox, a bar/restaurant owned by the parents of a dime a dozen point guard. My son Travis likes it there.  ;D

Thank you! I had thought of that as a stop! :)

There's an outside chance I can see Davante Gardner play this Wednesday in Yokohama. I'm rooting against our existing plans to meet up with friends.

Ok gang, looking for dining recommendations for Vegas. Staying at the Aria.

Like Brother Muggsy, we don't gamble. Going to see some shows. Maybe watch parts of the BET in a sports betting parlor. People watch too.

Not a dentist or an enginerd, so $1,000 a plate dinners are off the table. Thoughts would be appreciated!

I had a business lunch near there brother dgies at China Poblano in the Cosmo.  I will say that their Red Posole was very good and hearty. Solid portion. Excellent guajillo broth.   There's apparently a decent Thai joint at Aria.  I've always thought Javier's was overrated.  Yardbird is good if you head over to the Venetian.

Lemongrass is the Thai joint.  It's supposed to be good.

Long shot here but does anyone know of any Marquette bars or watch parties in Dallas tomorrow

While certainly not downplaying anything, the renewed public focus and, arguable, misunderstanding of abnormal flight operations is interesting and amusing.  You can readily see who doesn't fly regularly.  The DCA crash (and the Toronto SNAFU) not withstanding, people who flag and get dramatic over every flight issue is exhausting.  And 95% of that is the "chaos get clicks" environment we live in.

Off the top of my head, since post-COVID travel resumptions.

I was flying to IAH, we had issues with an engine, didn't catch fire but were smoking on landing and met by fire trucks on the tarmac/taxi-in.  Obviously no media coverage, but there wasn't even any sort of buzz in the terminal, business as usual.

My former roommate was on a flight from IAD to Europe and they had issues with the landing gear retraction on take off.  Flight path was diverted and they started to circle because the gear/brakes were having issues.  Always been taught to look to the FAs if you ever feel "scared".  If its business as usual or they are playing on their phone, its just random flight nonsense.  Well, he said the lead was anxiously rubbing her hands on her legs.  They ended up hard landing on a fully clear runway area flanked by half a dozen fire trucks cause they worried about the tires/brakes burning up.  First time he said he was ever truly scared/nauseous in his 1MM+ miles flown.  They had to get driven to the terminal in buses cause the plane was parked out for obvious reasons.  Again, no media coverage.  He admitted he was a bit disappointed in that once all worked out fine, he wanted a good story to show ;D

Fun times
