Tommy Brice for Coach

Quote from: pbiflyer on November 23, 2024, 07:25:00 AMMy turn to ask for advice. Have a work trip to Berlin in February. 🥶 whole team is going. We typically do a side trip for these events. But it is a bit like herding cats picking a place. Trying to find a place that fits everyone's requirements is a challenge.
So major requirements for side trip destination:
1. Direct flight to Berlin or reasonable train
2. Can't be colder than Berlin
3. Somewhere we haven't been, so London, Dublin, Lisbon, Rome, and all of Spain is out. Selfishly, I've been to Prague, Paris, Munich, and Vienna, so those would be a no vote from me. I could live with Vienna though and I guess Paris.

What I came up with was - Malta, Nice, Edinburgh, Amsterdam.  Maybe Florence.
Did I miss some place?

How long are you looking for? Dresden could be interesting for 1-2 nights. Copenhagen is great, but likely colder than Berlin. Also could go to Frankfurt.

As it turns out my team opted to go to Athens and I am going with, instead of staying in Berlin. Our company is based near Frankfurt, so been there many times. Love the small towns along the Rhine in that area.
There were food suggestions for Athens upthread. But any strolling, bar, hidden site suggestions?
Obviously will do the major ones. But always like the more obscure ones as well.

Having said that, I walk as much as I can.   Jutaw22, did you have a caddy or were you carrying your own clubs?

I carried my own clubs.  I'm not good enough to justify having a caddie!!! (Although I did shoot 84/89 on red/black, which is really good for me.)

My company's HQ is an hour train ride north of Frankfurt.  I was just there in November and will be back in January.

Let's talk Milwaukee. Going up for the MU vs Creighton game bringing my 14yr old nephew so looking for places to go that would have board games, or other activities (giant jenga, shuffleboard, etc).

Was thinking of taking him to the Annex, does that still have stuff in it? Are there other suggested places around the city?

I met my brother and family on the East side at a place like you asking about after a Marquette game back in 2019.  I don't remember the name or if it survived COVID but it was very busy.

Koz mini bowl allows kids. Wouldn't maybe do a late Friday night, but daytime is fine.
My kids liked fish fry at lakefront brewery with the umpah band. You get beer. Win win. Kids ate pretzels and brats.

Landmark on the East Side has games, foos, bowling. There is a shuffleboard place downtown called North South, District Fore has a golf simulator.

Longest single flight you've ever taken?  Tomorrow will be mine.  17 hours, 25 mins.

I did Newark to Singapore once on the SQ A340, which was all business class.  Kinda weird being in the back of the bus but also in business class.  It was very enjoyable.  I'd always prefer a long direct flight vs transferring through some hellhole (like CDG, where I currently sit).

Yea I did the reverse.  Heading back to the US from Mumbai in 2019, I randomly saw there was a crazy fare from Ahmedabad to Singapore to Newark for like $2000 in business.  Was already headed back to EWR on an economy flight costing like $1500, so I cancelled, found a $50 Air India flight from Mumbai to Ahmedabad and had a long but relaxing/interesting trip back.

But I'm with you, get me on a plane and let's just go.  I don't want to fly for 6-8 hours, get off, sit, and then do it all again. I've done more 15+ hours flights than I can count

Newark-Mumbai
ORD to Delhi
Newark-HK
ORD to HK
SF-Singapore
Shanghai to ORD

All multiple, sometimes 10+, times

If you're talking an 6-7 hour flight to Europe or a 14-16 hour flight to Asia, I def prefer the latter cause you can at least get solid rest and normally land at night

My wife on the other hand can't fathom that length of a flight.  She's not yet been to Asia specifically cause the fact that we can't fly 6-8 hours, get off, and do another 6 to SE Asia freaks her out. We have a standing invite to Singapore that would be red carpet rolled out and super amazing and guaranteed to be one of her favorite trips ever that is on hiatus cause of her mental block.

I just did SQ 31 from SFO-SIN on the A350.  It absolutely met my expectations, although they used to give out pajamas.  Anyway, outstanding service as always on Singapore Airlines.  Tremendous satay and shumai dumplings in particular.  I'm not a good sleeper but the biz class seat was extremely comfortable for diminutive citizens.  One of the flight attendants told me they will be adding 1st class seats to these aircrafts in the next few years.  All in all it was a rather pleasant experience for such a long flight.

I've done the JFK to Seoul and back a half dozen times as well as JFK to Narita. I've also done Bengaluru to Paris twice.

I've flown MKE to ORD(and return) multiple times that felt like it was an 8 hour trip.

No offense, but is there any business class seat that isn't comfortable for diminutive citizens?  Ive never heard of a shorter person who had an issue with a nicer airline seat.

I have a close colleague who is 5'7 and international travel for him is a breeze, especially flying in premium classes.  Meanwhile, my good friend who is 6'4 is much more discerning about how and who he flies.

No offense taken at all!  I just wanted to emphasize that it can be an advantage to be small.  :)  For those 6'4 I do think the configuration of those seats can be challenging to sleep.

Maybe. But will Creighton and St. John's?
They look like the class of league right now. Have not seen Johnnies play, but Creighton looks awesome.

I would think Muggsy would hate that his feet don't touch the floor, but he's probably used to it by now.

Looking for great food recommendations in downtown Atlanta.

My dad is an ND alum and asked me to go with him to the National Championship game on Monday.  Before you guys all rag on me for agreeing to go to the game, he normally would do this with my mom, also an ND alum, however the past several years she has experienced a precipitous decline in her physical health (expected, 50+ years of living with rheumatoid arthritis) and mental health (unexpected, early onset dementia) and can't really travel.  My dad has been her sole caretaker on a daily basis, helping her do all the basic life things we take for granted since she can't walk anymore and therefore hasn't been able to do anything for himself...somehow he was able to get my sister to help out with mom and even more shockingly is willing to trust her with that task.

So, if anyone has any ideas for a really great place to treat my dad before the game, it would be much appreciated.  Any cuisine is welcome except vegan...

Thanks in advance.

I haven't been down near the stadium in a while.  Let me do a little research and get back to you. Where are you staying and will you have a car?

I go to Atlanta every two years for my industry trade show.  (I will be back this May.)
I never rent a car and use the MART to get around.

One of my rituals is to visit The Varsity for lunch one day.  https://thevarsity.com/pages/the-varsity-atlanta
Dating from 1928, it's a chili dog restaurant next to Georgia Tech that is extremely large for GT gamedays.

I've been on Mercedes Benz field.  My trade group had their opening day meet-and-greet buffet dinner at the MBS and part of the reception area goes on the field sideline.
