Pirate's Ponderings
« on: January 01, 2017, 05:23:25 PM »
1.   Let me get this cliche out of the way right now.   Conference road games.   And every cliche that goes with them.
2.  Haanif needs a breakaway lay up.   He has got the yips so bad right now.    But, to his credit, he isn't forcing it and he is working hard everywhere else.
3.  Nobody can complain that it was boring or that either team didn't play hard.
4.   I was going to rhapsodize poetic about the struggles of freshmen in their first road game.   Then Markus got serious.   And Sam never quit working.    Those two are going to be a freaking blast to watch the next 3.5 years.
5.  Katin can shoot.   Who knew?
6.  The defense still had a couple of lapses, but all do.    They are playing a lot harder and a lot smarter and a lot more together on defense.
7.  The zone worked well.    Nice little change up.
8.  A healthy Duane sure would have been nice today.   Get well soon.
9.  JjJ was a turnover machine today and he had his obligatory 'stand and stare at the ref while the ball goes the other way' moment.  But then he gets those steals, and almost all is forgiven.
10.   MU got three dream looks in the last 2 minutes, Howard's 3, Luke's dunk, Haanif's lay up.   Literally cannot ask for better.   Sometimes.....
11.  Nice move subbing Katin for HC on that offensive possession. Paid off.   Wojo shows some feel for the game.
12.  MU rebounded so well..... until those foul shots.   Mental lapses.  Luke.  Sam.  JjJ.
13.   And then JjJ being JjJ.   Nice defensive play by SHU.  They worked harder in crunch time.   And smarter.
14.    Terrible way to lose.
15.   Next.

How many turnovers, missed layups and missed box outs could a single team have at the end of a game?

This was an awful way to lose.

Im not sure why people are surprised. This was one of those games that should have been awesome if we won, but understandable if we lost.

Terrible 30 seconds cost Reinhardt his first SOTG in his best performance. We were supposed to lose this, but this is the kind of game that differentiates a NCAA and NIT berth.

I think Wojo should make them watch the last two minutes 1000 times.

It's not the loss.  It's how the game was lost.  We peed our pants.

Fact.    Not going to stew, not going to be bitter, but the team did not do what they needed to do in the last minute and Seton Hall did.

That was a huge loss because MU pretty much had a road win in hand, and then crapped it away in the final minute. Road wins are so hard to come by in the Big East, especially against the upper half of the league. Now on to Philly for the Villanova game.

MU inventing new ways to lose.  Watch JJJ on the second 1 and 1, he shoves the SH player into Hauser so now he basically has to box out 2 players, one being his teammate.  Why would JJJ do that??  So dumb.

Played hard and mostly really good defense, including defensive rebounding for 39.5 minutes.  Reinhardt was great and the freshmen came around in the second half.  Need our other seniors to not be a liability on one end - JJ was outstanding defensively but a turnover machine, and Luke had far too many defensive lapses.

JJJ makes mind-boggling stupid decisions on a regular basis. He should have been seated for the last minute. The lost rebound, where he falls down and pushes Hauser out of the play, followed by the drive-turnover, were too much for me.  He can't be on the court when it matters.

So much good seemed to be erased in 1 minute, which is tough to swallow. Hopefully, we can make up for this one with an upset somewhere else.

Main concern is this coming back to haunt us if we find ourselves short a win when all is said and done. Seton Hall is not a garbage team, fortunately.

Also, I'm praying hard that Creighton's big man, Patton, is merciful and only puts up 30 on us. Delgado could not be stopped one on one.

Do the other 39 minutes not matter?  He's not a perfect player by any means but without him we're not even in the game at the end.

In early 2010 we struggled mightily to win these types of games. It took time, but we got better at it. This shows we can compete with a team that humiliated us twice last year. Anyone looking at today as a bigger negative than positive is off base. Sure, it sucks to lose, but today was a good sign.
