Many years Duke and UNC can make the Final Four without leaving the state of North Carolina.  And since the sites are so close, they are playing de facto home games.

Now that the state is banned from hosting post season NCAA games how much of a difference will this make on their post-season fortunes?

Note:  Do not want this to be a political discussion on the reason why.  Start another thread if you want to discuss that. (So Rocky can lock that one, not this one)

NCAA to relocate championships from North Carolina for 2016-17
http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/ncaa-relocate-championships-north-carolina-2016-17

Based on the NCAA's commitment to fairness and inclusion, the Association will relocate all seven previously awarded championship events from North Carolina during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAA Board of Governors made this decision because of the cumulative actions taken by the state concerning civil rights protections.

In its decision Monday, the Board of Governors emphasized that NCAA championships and events must promote an inclusive atmosphere for all college athletes, coaches, administrators and fans. Current North Carolina state laws make it challenging to guarantee that host communities can help deliver on that commitment if NCAA events remained in the state, the board said.

How many times has Duke or UNC "made the Final four without leaving the state of North Carolina?"  Ever?

UNC in 82 and 2008 as far as I can tell. So, twice in 35 seasons.

But don't use facts, just trust me, it happens all the time.

Herman Cain

Lack of consistency in thought. Teams are still allowed to play games where they earn the right to a home game. Hence, NCAA is taking this action for purely political reasons.

NCAA should be abandoned. Let the leagues and Networks run college sports.

The decision will hurt Duke and UNC.

Their fans will still travel en masse to Atlanta, Charleston, Richmond and other East coast tournament games. So the on-court impact will likely be minimal. The far bigger blow is to Carolina pride and bottom-line revenue for the universities and the state.

The NCAA tournament is one of the nation's biggest sporting events. Simply hosting a regional generates around $20 million for the local economy. The Final Four can bring in a haul of $300 million — bigger than the NCAA football championship. Not to mention all the free publicity for the host city.

State and university officials are loathe to give up that kind of revenue. It's not like they have millions of unused dollars lying around just waiting to be spent. Something's got to give. It promises to be very interesting.

Why?  They are a private organization.  They can do what they want.

The organization I worked for moved their big annual conference out of Raleigh because of HB2. Cost them a crapload of cancellation fees, but they felt it is the right thing to do (and the organization itself is very apolitical).

It got moved to Cleveland.  Sounds like a letdown, but on the upside, we are having a kickass party in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Have some patience, FFS.

Now its over ... and hopefully for a long time.

You sure typed a lot of words when the answer to my question was "two."

I wanted to highlight my larger point that nearly ever year one of these two schools makes the S16 (or further) without getting on an airplane, and often staying at home.

Four high quality arenas (Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Raleigh) and guaranteed crowds.  Easy choice for the NCAA.

Herman Cain

I wonder what kind of contracts these venues had with the NCAA. It would not surprise me if there was some litigation as a result, unless there is some back room deal to restore the venues when the laws are changed.

Except here was the first sentence of the opening post:

Many years Duke and UNC can make the Final Four without leaving the state of North Carolina.

So, as Cooby says, twice in 35 years.

I'll be a good boy and won't rant at length against an unenforceable, ill-advised, discriminatory, shortsighted law that probably will get overturned by the courts after millions of taxpayer dollars will have been spent trying to defend it and hundreds of millions of dollars (and thousands of jobs) will have been lost since it was enacted.

I can't wait until Las Vegas has a state of the art football stadium and the final four is played here!

Doesn't Vegas have a law that they cannot take bets on sporting events that take place in Vegas?

Oh, but nice attempt at deflecting attention from your own erroneous thesis.

No.  They allowed betting on UNLV and Nevada-Reno games starting in 2001. Four leagues (Pac-12, Mountain West, WAC, Big West) hold their men'a conference basketball tournaments in Las Vegas. When Las Vegas' NHL team starts playing in the 2017-18 season you will be able to bet on their games.  If/when the Raiders move here it's anticipated that you will be able to bet on their games too.

NCAA should stay out of it-PERIOD

The NCAA is a organization of schools that have banded together to organize and regulate sporting events between themselves.  So you're saying that the schools who have created a championship tournament should stay out of the decision of deciding where those games should be played.  That sounds silly.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
