Quote from: Viper on June 28, 2026, 09:28:44 PM...so, give up? Recruiting nationally hasn't exactly resulted in winning of late. Work it w/HS coaches, AAU coaches, players etc in-state too. Or not. Sub .500 since 01/25. But hey, those out of staters CH and Clark have improved, Owens is healthy.

I assure you, they're kicking the tires on every kid they want or see as a fit.  Spending extra time and resources inside of a meaningless boundary is foolish.

Recruiting is national.

The recruiting that lead to last year's disappointment was clearly not good enough. But that has nothing to do with where the recruits came from.

I think Shaka is purposely excluding white kids from Wisconsin, tbh

yes, national. I don't disagree. However...backyard is hardly a resource burn. Iowa State, and others, thank MU's seeming ambivalence.

Consider, that it isn't ambivalence.  Any player in the top 100 RSCI is at least getting a phone call to a player to determine fit and interest.  If there isn't a good fit, and there isn't mutual interest both parties move on.  Your obsession with having kids from Wisconsin play at Marquette is strange.  Not everyone from the state wants to stay home to go to school.

Marquette recruited Donovan Davis very hard so that one wasn't for a lack of trying.

While MU recruited Batemon, Yusef Gray and Leon Bond, I don't have the confidence to say they recruited as hard as Davis.  They may have.  I was told by a friend that Davis was a major target.

Did Shaka give Donovan's HS coach a quarter zip?

??? Wearing a Marquette quarter-zip in Freedom likely gets you killed.

He could have had a confederate flag sewn into it.  Just shows you how out of touch Shaka is with the local scene.

So because CH and Clark have not paid dividends as of yet we basically ignore the fact that Stevie, Kam, Oso, Nigel and Stevens were all out of state freshmen recruits and neither Tyler or Omax went to high school in the state?

You should get on the phone with Gard.......he seems to be focusing on MN too much for your liking.

And Bond committed a month or so after Shaka got the job, iirc.

I would.  The pipeline would have been opened and the connection with their high school coaches would have been worth it even if the kids transferred out.

Kai Rogers would play much harder for Marquette because he would feel the support of his hometown fans like the wind beneath his wings. Just like David Joplin did. This is science.

If only we had landed Matt Heldt,,,,,,or preferably Evan Anderson, JP Gavinski or Greg Steimsma ...........MU would easily have 2 or 3 more NCAA championships by now........sigh.

Can someone do a Ben diagram of all American players we've had and players from Wisconsin? I'll even settle for all conference.

I genuinely can't fathom how this obsession with small town guys 5hrs away is still a thing.

It's not a thing. MU is not very successful recruiting in Wisconsin so focuses on out of state players and prep schools out east. MU used to have success recruiting in-state, being viewed as a home state school, but hasn't signed a top player from within the state during Shaka's tenure. Joplin was a good player but not among the most highly rated Wisconsin players during that time. Does it matter? I find it interesting but it doesn't matter if you win.

I don't think many of these guys got jobs hosting sports talk radio shows like Badger basketball players.  Can see why local kids shun Marquette
