Quote from: onepost on November 07, 2025, 01:53:52 PMSo what's our read on the 2027 class now that we can get going on it?
Three open spots I think - main targets would be Donovan Davis, Jaxson Davis, Devin Cleveland (my #1 hope), Jack Kohnen, Kager Knueppel?

The great thing is that they're all pretty damn close to Milwaukee - LaLu in Indiana (Cleveland), Wisconsin (Donovan Davis, Kohnen, Knueppel), and Illinois (Jaxson Davis).  So Shaka can be front and center as often as he wants, which made a huge impression on Egbuonu in particular.

Involved with Antonio Pemberton and Micah Gordon as well.  I believe Gordon is planning an official visit to Marquette at some point.

Next season, MU will have 3 bigs, 2 little PG's and 10 players between Tre And Royce in size. Tre, Zaide, and Sean are the ones slated to leave after 27.  And Chase after 26.   So, IMO, the emphasis for 27 needs to be guards.

I had heard the staff anticipated an early commit from Dooney Johnson, so maybe that surprise to Gonzaga spurs Shaka to push for Donovan Davis.

I've talked about it with a couple people, but I see it as:
- PG: Jaxson Davis, Micah Gordon, Devin Cleveland
- Shooter: Jack Kohnen, Kager Knueppel
- Wing: Donovan Davis

Jerel has the strong connection with Jaxson Davis, so maybe that's the difference in landing him at PG.  Love Cleveland's game and you're right, Gordon visits soon.

ISU was Kohnen's first big offer IIRC, and they're always a gigantic pain in our ass so who knows how that will shake out.  I know the Knueppel fam loves Shaka and staff so maybe we pivot to Kager.

Mark Few has already named a successor.  Maybe he'll call it quits after this year or next and Dooney will consider his options.

Bummer on the news on Dooney.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

That's what provoked the "Bro, what."

Indeed.

Maybe there is more depth of talent on this one - maybe - but otherwise that statement is laughable. I wish it were true that our top 5-7 players this season are more talented than those of the 2023-24, 2012-13, 2002-03 and 1993-94 teams (among others) but it's not close.

TBD.  Hopefully he is somewhat right.

Correct.  I don't think he's right but I'd happily celebrate if he is.

Here's how I see 2027 shaping up:

1) Top priority should be PG.  I know coaches have visited Jaxson Davis and Antonio Pemberton this fall.  As mentioned, Micah Gordon has a visit scheduled.  Any of these three would be a great get.

2) Devin Cleveland is an option, but I personally view him as more of a combo guard than a PG. Even if Shaka lands Cleveland , I would want one of the three PG mentioned above.  The staff may feel differently; no idea.

3) I absolutely love Donovan Davis and you never turn down a talent of his caliber.  But...Alex Egbuonu already fits the bill as an athletic combo forward.  Sure, they could play together, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the coaches maybe target a shooter or a big instead.

4) Jack Kohnen, I have to see him a bit more to really make up my mind.  Not a strong opinion either way.

5) Kager Knueppel is a very good shooter, but not nearly as good of a player as Kon.  His recruiting hasn't really seemed to ramp up to high major status yet, but he's worth monitoring. Maybe he's the kind of player Shaka takes a flyer on and redshirts.

6) Pemberton's teammate at Brewester, 6-5 SG Markus Kerr, is another name to monitor. He fits the bill as an athletic wing that can shoot. His game greatly intrigues me and I hope Marquette makes a push.

7) I'm sure there will be other targets that emerge. At this time last year, none of knew who Nash Walker was.  Two years ago, it was Michael Phillips.  A lot of time to go in this recruiting cycle.

PG has to be the priority in 2027.  Nigel currently projects to be the only one on the roster by then.  Love where we sit for Jaxson Davis, any of him, Pemberton or Gordon work.

SG or a smaller wing is needed is as well.

We're pretty stocked on big wings and bigs for 2027 still.  Any add here would be a luxury more than need in my view.  Probably would be a stud we just cant say no to or a developmental type to redshirt (Knueppel for example).

Honestly, if we could just find Nigel and Stevens clones for 2027 that would be perfect haha.

Maybe Tom Brady can help.
