Let's pass on a top 30 kid from Milwaukee.

What I like is back to back 2 seeds and double BE titles.

Time to go into the portal and recruit over the player who isn't here yet.

Dooney's 3 point shooting stats from HS:

Freshman 61-129 (47.3%)
Sophomore 62-188 (33.0%)

Overall 123-317 (38.8%)

Not sure why his shooting percentage dropped off from freshman to sophomore year, but he's at least a respectable shooter at high volume.

His form looks good, so I would project him to be at least an average shooter in college with above average shooting potential.

Not until Shaka recruits over the returning players if he can improve the team by doing so. Of course, some have to get the boot. Then recruit over the commits and the prospects that he is considering.

Getting settled

People can mock the strategy and the words all they want, but relationships clearly matter to these families.

I think it is sustainable. As is the winning.

My problem is that I think it's a sustainable way to be the 15th best team every year. Which sucks to me. I don't want Marquette to be the Bulls.

15th best team in the country? Marquette hasn't sustained at that level for nearly 50 years, and now that's not good enough?

I probably should have said 20th-25th but still. I'm not going to get excited about a 20th place team when they refused an obvious pathway to being the 7th/8th best team because of some arbitrary standard they set for themselves.

"Arbitrary standard?" It's the cornerstone philosophy for how this coach wants to build the roster.

Of course you would be ecstatic. They would have achieved something they haven't done since the 70s.

Parents are learning what Shaka is doing, strategy to be consistently good is having back to back good recruiting classes.  Let's face it, junior and senior class were below average.  The last two classes seem to be better and already he has 2 future kids for the next year. Add one more player who can play then you have 9 good kids, now you just get lucky on questionable players.

Being the 15th best of 368 (or whatever the number is now) is good...really good...and gives you a realistic chance to be a Championship contender.

You are wrong. Their was no obvious path as you suggest.

Kid, if you know you have some work to do, and you want to be someplace that works with you, gives you time to grow and develop, and that you can trust to not randomly hit the portal to recruit over you, consider Marquette.   If you are just in it for your second or third NIL deal, somewhere else might be a better fit for you.

Shaka is King Moonracer.

Add in the fact all the 5th and 6th year players from Covid are gone now, and Shaka's long-term plan starts to look better and better.

MU82

I'm sick of being good to very good every year with a chance to be great if the basketball takes a few friendly bounces.

Better to get into bidding wars for 8-10 new portal players every year to replace those that depart.

Shaka's strategy will fail, if he starts losing good players to the portal. As long as this does not happen Shaka's strategy will work. We lost three multi-year staters, so we need to be patient this year. The way I see it 2025-2026 a step back, 2026-27 a step forward, 2027-28 a step forward, 2028-29 step forward and then a step back as the cycle starts all over again.
