Coaches leave for better jobs. Just like people in other professions leave their jobs for better jobs. It's what happens. I'll enjoy Wojo while he's here. He's doing something big.

Not all Coaches, Coach K had many chances over the years for seemingly greener pastures but didn't.  Maybe Wojo, with all the years with "K" he picked up on the intangible values that many don't see or consider.

And to your last sentence, yeah I think Wojo sees that too, and maybe adds a little more bonding.

I have no doubt that Wojo loves Duke, loves Coach K. Whether he's a candidate is contingent on whether we can convert his recruiting success into wins. Otherwise, this is a moot point. But we're aggressively trending the right way.

That out of the way, Wojo's decision boils down to 2 things and which he values more:
1.) His love and allegiance to Duke, Coach K, etc.
2.) His desire to build his own legacy independent of #1

If #1 outweighs #2, he goes. If vice versa, he stays.

Let's get the wins necessary to be put in that predicament.

30 posts. 40 mentions of "Herro." I couldn't be this single-minded if I tried. I think we're witnessing the birth of the next great meme — much fresher than "Crean sucks." No matter what a thread or post is about, "Herro" is the answer.

Someday Marquette will hire a head coach that retires as the head coach of Marquette. I have no idea if Wojo is that coach. I can see evidence that he could be and I see evidence that he won't be. I won't worry about it until he is gone....hopefully in 25 years with a whole lot of new blue and gold banners hanging from the roof of the Foxconn Center or whatever its going to be called.

On point #2. Also....He can do it at a basketball first school, which throws a lot of money that way, with a rich tradition of winning, in a new NBA arena (hopefully). MU is doing quite a bit to allow a legacy to thrive here.

That is a bold statement since it happens so rarely - there are blue bloods that haven't seen that happen in the modern era

Coach K coached at Army before he went to Duke. I'm not going to lose sleep about Wojo leaving. Coaches are as loyal to schools as schools are to coaches. If Wojo doesn't perform he'll be gone by MU's doing. If Wojo does perform chances are he'll be gone by his own doing. I'm simply going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Outstanding post, wades.

I'm not going to go back in this thread and look because I'm too effen lazy, but I'm guessing it is FILLED with comments from people who wanted Wojo gone. I wonder if some of the folks now worried that he might leave are the same ones who wanted him gone a year or two ago.

I fully subscribe to the sentiments expressed in your last line. I have been a Wojo booster since the day he signed on with MU, and all he has done since then is make me more glad we hired him. He is an outstanding recruiter who has implemented a fun, successful offensive system and who gets his kids to play hard.

I look forward to seeing him continue to progress as a coach, and to continue to make us better and better. I plan to spend that time enjoying MU hoops - just as I did in Henry's year and just as I did last season - rather than fretting about when he might or might not leave.

1) Are we sure Duke will stay in the family?  What if Billy Donovan wants to go back to college?  Seems like a prime candidate to me.

2) Coach K has a huge coaching tree.  If Wojo puts together a resume that beats out the rest, that means Marquette had some great success.  It would be a good problem to have.

3) Wes Matthews strikes me as a potential superstar coach.  He's getting his feet wet with some coaching experience in the TBT.  He's well spoken and would be able to sell Marquette.  An NBA player that made it through hard work, dedication, and playing the right way.  He still needs to get real coaching experience and determine whether or not he wants to be a college basketball coach.  But I think he has the raw ingredients to be a fantastic head coach.

1 and 2 are great points.

3 ... Wes might or might not be a great coach. Who knows? Your argument for him is as good as any. But there is a reason why the coaching ranks - both college and pro - are not filled with guys who were successful NBA players. It's a lot of work, a lot of angst, and most of them would be taking a sizable pay cut for that work and angst. And in college, recruiting adds a whole 'nother layer of work and angst. Most former NBA standouts consider themselves above having to plead with a 16-year-old to "pick me! pick me! pick me!"

Maybe Wes would be an exception. Maybe he'd be "our Ewing." Probably not, though. Plus, it will be interesting to see how GTown's Ewing works out!

They are close, but twin is about 2 inches shorter. 6'5" vs 6'3" can be a decent separator

So I had wanted to do this a couple days ago but it slipped my mind.

I just want to thank everyone for their continuing contributions on the recruiting thread.  We began our 3rd year on August 1st and I really think it had been a treasure trove of continuing up to date information that I believe all of us appreciate.  Some of the kids mentioned on the very first page were young pups at the time and are now Warriors.  Others mentioned later on already star for our program.  Still more represent Marquette's bright basketball future.

Who knows?  Maybe one or two enjoyed seeing their name go up on the chart thinking 'Man, those people are serious!' or more likely 'Man, those Scoopers are crazy!'

Let's keep the fun going.

Not that it's earth-shattering, but relative to Grimes from his interview with Evan Daniels:

"Marquette: Coach Wojo, he has just been at every game. He's front line. They've almost been four deep at every game. They really show me that they want me to be a priority. They got Joey Hauser and I talked to him a little bit on the adidas circuit and they really loved my style of play and that I'm the type of guard to get them to a Final Four. So they told me I would be put in right away. That it would be my team from day 1 and just throw me in the fire and really try to lead them to a Final Four."

Did stress over and over in the piece how he is focusing primarily on those schools making him a priority.  The "Wojo comes to all of my games" and "they've been four deep at every game" you'd think would be enough to get us a visit and could lend credence to Evan Flood's tweet from yesterday.

Undoubtedly getting Herro would lead to many National Championships, but all the challenge and hence fun would be taken away knowing it was just because no one could find an answer to the "player who put Wisconsin basketball on the map".
You actually have a degree from Marquette?
