I think this is the year we have to show an ability to win. Not next year. Everything is in our favor. We have an experienced team, a true superstar in Markus, A bunch of athletic kids and the Big East  is only going to get tougher next year with the addition of U Conn. No more wait till next year. The loss to Wisconsin was a loss to a rival in an away game. We should still be owning opponents at home and winning more than we lose in conference.

I recognize reality is Wojo got his job extended another year because of the recruiting class. He needed to deliver on the recruits and he did and still has more irons in the fire. However the fan base needs to keep demanding excellence on the court.
Would be nice to get excellence on the court.

This isn't exactly true. While I would agree that he got extended in large part for recruiting purposes, it wasn't because of just one class, and definitely not because of the class he had in place. Wojo got his extension in May, more than two months before our first 2020 recruit committed to Marquette. The extension allowed him to tell these recruits he would be here their entire college careers, but it's not like they had to give him an extension so committed players wouldn't back out.

Then there's this: Contract extensions for college coaches are pretty much meaningless.

It won't stop MU from firing Wojo if administration thinks he can't get the job done.

And it won't stop Wojo from leaving if he wants to go elsewhere.

It is classic "window dressing." It's supposed to send the exact message brewski described, but by now is anybody really fooled by these things?

He doesn't need to win this year. But I expect the team to win this year!

I do too. We missed a lot of open shots against UW, even Markus. Despite the loss the team was looking for the open man and not just Markus which I hope bodes well for the rest of the season.

agreed, if a guy doesn't nominally have 4/5 years on his contract you've basically fired him

It can, however, affect the payout amount

Plus Akanno.

Until Akanno shows something on the floor and remains potential, he's not going to scare off a grad transfer guard.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

True dat. But in most cases (not all, but most), that doesn't matter, either.

Mane sounds like a serious pipedream  Is there ANY reason to think we would have ANY kind of advantage or track to get him?

We have his only scheduled official visit.

Also he is likely a 2nd rounder right now based on projections. Needs to develop on finishing and some shooting. An extra year of development could put him more into late lottery.

To be fair, I'm sure those 20+ scouts are there to watch more players than just Karim Mane.

This mentality needs to change starting NOW...They landed an out of state 5* in Garcia. Now it's time to start taking them seriously nationally recruiting wise. They made a statement. The sky is the limit, anyone is attainable.

Yep. I like the way Wojo gets a prospect in his sights and goes after him, no matter the competition. Yes, ultimately, some of them end up at bluebloods or other good programs, but Wojo has landed our fair share, too.

That's the advantage of having that big basketball budget that some Scoopers love to talk about. IMHO, Wojo uses it very well for recruiting, and I want him to keep doing so.

Not to mention that getting a player like Garcia could make getting a player like Mane much easier.  Mane's speed and touch at the hoop reminds me a lot of D-Wade.  With a rangy big like Garcia unclogging the lane, his 2 pt % could be insane, and dump-offs to Dawson would give him some great assist numbers, too.

Wojo simply needs to point at Howard to sell Karim on MU.  I don't think many other programs could guarantee that kind of focal point of the offense and actually have proof of it.

Also, the fact he is from Canada may make it easier to recruit him to Milwaukee than a kid from California or something similar.  Let's hope Wojo and Co. get it done.

Good points.  Obviously i hope we have a chance.  wasn't Garcia at the Nova game last year?  :)

What's the mentality now? We got garcia so now we should be able to recruit like UK? KU? We have a shot mane, but nothing wrong with asking about our chances
