A Catholic university in St. Louis has taken down a statue of a Catholic missionary over complaints that its depiction of Catholic conversion efforts represents a legacy of white supremacy, The College Fix reported.

The statue at Jesuit-run Saint Louis University (SLU) is of Jesuit missionary Pierre-Jean De Smet, who evangelized American Indians during the 1800s and has several cities and schools in the U.S. named after him. It shows him holding a crucifix aloft as he ministers to two American Indians, who both look up to him in awe.

Do you mean father Jacques Marquette? We do have a father Marquette statue by the Joan of Arc chapel.

I'm as anti-pc as anybody, and I think moving the statue is a bit much, but there's no equivalency between our statue of father Marquette and their statue.




The complaint about their statue is that it looks like the white missionary is dominating the natives and they are worshiping him. It is a stupid controversy.

There is a similar controversy over our seal, but if you look at the painting on which the seal is based, then you understand the context.

If you know anything about art the statue of De Smet isn't about white dominance but draws the eye from left to right and up to the deity as his desire was to bring their souls to God. There is no dominance in his posture but a fatherly hand resting on the shoulder and his left pointing to the heavens.  But I can see how the chronically aggrieved would infer this.

I am actually a fan of Abstract Expressionism. That statue is hideous. In fact, it's more than hideous. It's sh1t.
