The men's volleyball tournament went to 12 teams this year for the first time. 4 regions of 3 teams, top 4 seeds in the tournament get a first round bye and host the region.

UCLA is the 1 seed overall and lost just one match, and was looking for its 3rd national title in 4 years. They were down 12-11 in the 5th set to UC Irvine in their regional final and rallied off 4 points in a row to win, with the team on the court celebrating...until Irvine challenged a no touch call that got overturned, making it 14-13 UCLA, and Irvine rallied off 3 straight to win the match. Here's what had originally been a no touch call to win the match for UCLA and got overturned, needing clear proof to overturn the call.

By my eyes, that's clear proof to have overturned a touch call if it was called that way, not the other way around. Crazy.

Wow...I don't see a touch there. Certainly nothing so clear as to overturn a no-touch call.

a fun story involving MU Volleyball. The season starts Monday at Fiserv Forum against #2 Texas.

"Marquette freshman volleyball student-athlete Allie Beers is generating significant commercial traction prior to her first collegiate match, as her No. 6 jersey recently ranked among the top 10 sellers nationally on The NIL Store platform. Beers—who is from Wisconsin—acknowledged the viral appeal of the "6 Beers" combination but noted she must carefully navigate university compliance rules prohibiting athletes from endorsing alcohol, tobacco, or gambling businesses. To do so, Beers is coordinating with Marquette Director of NIL Strategy and Athlete Marketing Madi Dunker to develop compliant marketing plans that capitalize on the organic merchandise surge. Volleyball HC Tom Mendoza weighs in: "Especially this town, with the Brewers and everything, I think they embrace it. I think it's good to have some fun with it." (link) "

Great story. I think in my MU days, her number would be 24.

I may be going to the match at Illinois so I'll have to get one before then. This is what NIL is supposed to be about.

Took set 1 against Texas, had a 3pt lead but Texas went on a big tear and won set 2.

I'm happy we look like we can hang. Gives me hope we'll continue to be a competitive team this year.

Pretty good showing. The Ball State transfer is legit. They play a pretty fast offensive system and having a legit option out of the back row is huge at the level Marquette is at.

Texas is not that great right now. They need to stop selling this transformational move in volleyball to all jump serving. When Texas just lollipopped float serves into the middle of the court Marquette couldn't win points. There are so few women's college volleyball players who put enough heat on jump spin serves to make it worth it. Even when they served in it was an easy serve.

ASU, Pitt, Kentucky, and Wisconsin all looked a level above Texas this weekend. I'd think Nebraska and likely Stanford will be too.

But a good showing for a rebuilding year for Marquette. They're young but didn't look it much. They were picked 3rd in the BE. If they play like tonight I'd be more surprised by 3rd than I would be by winning the BE.

Yeah I didn't understand the announcers talking that strategy up. At one point is was like 9 aces to 16 service errors. I don't claim to be a volleyball stated but I feel like that's not a ratio you'd tout as a success.

What was really frustrating with set 5 was they were neck and neck after that opening run. Just came out looking like they didn't expect to be there and didn't know what to do. Hopefully it gives them a bit of confidence moving forward.
