Agreed. As much as I would love being #1, I don't see any sound logic to be moved ahead of UCONN if we win.

I think unless we control the game start to finish, like the Kansas game, we'll stay behind them. Being at their place might swing some voters, but I'm sure most would keep them ahead of us.

I definitely don't think we would jump Uconn with a win, nor do I even really think we should.

But the logic would definitely be based on being a road game and potential margin of victory. Which is sound logic for a ranking system more set on what are you doing now than body of work like a resume.

I'm shocked people think UCONN will get a win at Wintrust!  :)

It would be very difficult to leap-frog them even if we win tomorrow and Sat.  Although I would think they would fall to #2 assuming Purdue wins.

I think MU would pass UConn next week if they win the next two. Road wins are big and the gap between 1 and 4 is not all that great. Let's get the wins are see what happens.

lawdog77

Just my 2 cents. If we beat Butler and UConn we move to 2 or 3 with them 4. Recency bias with the voters

I'm all in favor of it. I just think objectively, if we win, UCONN at 23-3 deserves to be ahead of MU at 20-5. Losing to the #4 team, even at home, shouldn't punish you that bad.

When has sound logic ever been involved in the AP poll? If we go 2-0 this week, I'd expect Marquette to be #2 behind Purdue next week, even though Connecticut has a better overall resume. Voters' desire to reward wins and punish losses will outweigh carefully ranking the top 25 teams based on their full body of work.

I hope we get to find out.

This is probably correct, regardless of the logic or lack thereof behind it  ;D

AP poll logic: "Win good; lose bad." With a little bit of "ACC good" mixed in.

In the AP poll, i think we'd be ahead.  Just because of the nature of the win-and-move-up, lose-and-move-down nature of the poll.

When it comes to the S-Curve for seeding purposes, they'd still be a notch ahead of us (both would be #1s though, so it wouldn't really matter)

If you beat UConn in a Top 5 matchup on the road then you are above them in the rankings.  UConn had the 277 hardest non-conf schedule and UNC is their only true highlight.  Indiana, Texas and the Zags have proven to be anything but top notch.  They had one Non-conf loss which was Kansas who we handled mightily.

If MU were to beat UConn we would have three Big East losses and they would have two.  That is is easily overcome with a road win against that team.

Goose,

How are you feeling about this week?  Will we seize this opportunity?  Who needs to step up in your estimation?  Is it Kam time?  Ty.

I feel very good about getting the win at Butler and realistic about UConn. Saturday is big game for both teams and home court is a major advantage.

Last year they went to X in mid January and this game has a similar feel to me, only it is a bigger game due to national rankings. Going into X I wanted them to prove they could a win a big game on the road and they passed that test, even in a loss. Imo, that was a turning point game that they built off for the rest of the season.

On Saturday I want them to have a chance to win that game and see what happens. If my belief that this team is at a much higher level than last year, they should have a chance to win it.

To win on Saturday everyone needs to be contributors, regardless of their role. That said, TK and Oso have to play like AA's to win in all likelihood. I give them a 30% chance of winning Saturday and hoping that with 5 minutes to go the odds are better than that.

If we go 2-0 this week, Rothstein will move us from 8 to 7.  👀

Can we pressure their guards?  Newton seems like a barometer player for them and Spencer has been great all year.  At the same time I don't think they're elite ball handlers or passers.  I believe we can turn them over. Realistically UCONN is a nightmare prop when they hit threes. I have seen games where they've looked unguardable but others where they go brick city.  I think we can all live with Clingan scoring (as long as Oso stays on the floor)and even Castle getting his own.  My hope is our guards outplay Newton and Spencer and they kick the ball away.

Biggest issue, aside from a bad shooting night and giving up second chances, is avoiding the 5-7 minute stretch of bad basketball. They have unbeatable for stretches this year and very beatable for stretches. It is time to start putting together a complete game and I think they are getting closer to that. Time will tell.

No question about it.  We're really difficult to guard when he's on his game.
