Sconnies, whats the deal
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:28:40 AM »
As a Marquette alum and IL resident i found sconnies to be very strange. calling pop "soda", water fountain's "bubblers", and Friday fish fires. They are also extremely friendly but I have no problem with that. did someone dose the drinking water in Wisco or what? Why are sconnies so different from FIP's?

I eat my fish fried on Fridays, not fired.
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

That was an epic first post.  I also like my fish fried, never fired, I prefer "FIB" to "FIP" (F*ing Illinois Person? I guess its gender neutral, but we aren't exactly aiming for politically correct on the term anyway), and I guess I'm just happy that you have no problem with friendly people.  I wont defend bubbler.

I'm surprised you weren't confused about how you were living in "Muh-waukee" instead of "Milwaukee" when you came to MU as well.

I personally say "drinking fountain", maybe sometimes "water fountain".  No idea what there is about drinking/water fountains that involves bubbles.

Ding Dong DJO.  People from WI, don't do the Dells. Folks from Wisco, go Up North.  Also, I believe the term bubbler came from a company named Bubbler, that manufactured water fountains.  And people ride scooters in Wisco, because we have an epic amount of the morbidly obese.  I saw a 14 year old, 400 lb. Kid on one of those once.

Bubbler origin, I was close.  Kohler trademarked the term back in 1890's.

Bubbler is the one word growing up in Wisconsin and then going to college out of state I always found to be pretty unique to WI.  Soda however isn't.  I still hate the word "pop".  What do you call a vodka with soda water?  A vodka pop?

I say vodka and sparkling water.  Is that the same thing?
