Where else were you accepted before choosing Marquette?
« on: May 11, 2010, 12:08:05 PM »
A discussion on the other board prompted this question.  I was accepted at Michigan, ND, DePauw, as well as two less prestigious state schools before choosing Marquette.   One of the primary reasons I chose MU over those other schools was an arrogant vibe I got from the student guides/hosts I encountered on my other visits.   My MU visit was just a hoot with a bunch of really fun, really down to earth guides/hosts.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

I'm probably a rare case, but I only filled out one application. Knew all along that MU was the place for me.

Largely agree with the MU atmosphere being the difference.  I was going for engineering, so it came down to: GMI (formerly General Motors Institute, now Kettering U), Rose-Hulman, and Wash U.

Minnesota, Xavier and MU.  They were the only three I applied at, I ruled out a few others before simply because of tours and atmosphere (Purdue, WI, and some state schools) similar to what Tower said.  I eliminated X just for a variety of reasons it basically felt like a little worse fit then MU and in a location I wasn't as excited about.  Minnesota had a great tour and nice campus until we got to the dorms and other students.  Burnt out lights, every door in the place was locked.  People would pass by each other and not say anything in the wings.  Very unfriendly and unpleasant atmosphere, it seemed like nobody was happy that they were there.  Compare that to MU, where even on the tour I was offered a beer and was invited in a bunch of rooms and people were hanging out.

I was accepted to Minnesota, UW, Marquette, West Point, and I had an appointment to the Naval Academy.

It came down to Marquette, UW, and Navy and after visiting the Naval Academy I realized I wanted to have a life in college and UW had a pre-engineering program whereas Marquette admitted you directly into the School of Engineering so I went to Marquette.

St. Eds in Austin, Texas was the only other school where I applied.  Both were sight unseen.

Your "internship" at the Sugar Shack has paid big dividends for you.

I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go when i was in high school, so I applied to pretty much any place that interested me in the slighest.  On top of that, because I'm a faculty kid and there's a chance to go to every Jesuit school for free(except Georgetown) as part of the FACHEX program, my parents made me apply to all of them(even Georgetown).

I got into all the Jesuit schools as well as a ton of other places....Stanford, Boston U, Oberlin, IU, Pepperdine, Arizona State....and a bunch more I can't even remember anymore.  In the end though it came down to MU and Boston College...with MU winning out because it was free.
