Any thoughts on the best ubiquitous Asian Brew?  Tiger?  Taiwan Beer?  Chang?  I have a little grocery store near me where I can get Chang or Singha cheap.

I would choose Asahi over Sapporo and Kirin, but not over Chang, Tiger, or Singha.

Ok

Chang stinks.  Tiger is solid, Singha is fine.

Clearly the choice is San Miguel.

When I was in HK last year, I had a local brand called Gweilo Beer, which is hilarious.  It was actually pretty solid.

What about Lion?  Kingfisher?  Bintang?  Maybe I'll do a blind taste test.  Cass is horrible imo.  Beer Lao is pretty good.

The only time any Asian beer is good, is when you're in Asia nothing else is available. Otherwise just stick with some American microbrew of your liking and it'll be 100% then any of that stuff.

I'm not comparing them to microbrews or the best pilsners, lagers, ipas, quads, blondes, etc.

Bintang is fine.  Kingfisher is horrible.  Kingfisher and Sula (the preeminent Indian winemaker) are easily the worst 1-2 punch of alcohol in any major country in the world.

But this is correct.  I don't go seeking out Coors or Bud abroad.  I don't need a Carlsberg if I'm in Italy.  The only reason people elevate mass market beers imported from foreign countries is some weird exotic snobbery (aka the people that think Stella is an elite brew when it's Belgian Bud Light).  Grab a Kirin at a sushi restaurant or a Tsingtao with your dim sum, I get it.  Grabbing it from a liquor store is a bit much for me

Seems like you are talking down $1 imports at the Ardmore.

Hah.    Circa 1985, $1 Mooseheads were the bomb.

This right here. Stella is so pedestrian it's painful.

Only problem was, there was 50/50 chance the Moosehead was skunked.

In 1985, I lacked the discerning palate to care.

Labatt's Blue, Labatt's Green, Moosehead...loved those imports from far away, exotic Canada.

After subsisting on $5 cases of assorted swill they were a delight.

I believe the Ardmore had Moosehead on tap at some point during my Marquette days.

Lot later, but in the mid to late 00s, my roommate for 2 years of college grew up partially, and still had family, in Plattsburgh in way upstate NY.  I don't recall if it was during shortish trips to Montreal or places close to the border, but they would get all sorts of Labatt for absurdly cheap.  They would drive through twice a year on semi-annual road trips and drop off like a dozen cases at a time from the back of the packed up Suburban.  Made pre-gaming for hockey games feel more authentic for sure.

I can regularly find Labatt's Blue and Moosehead in my local grocery store.
Do they sell in the Midwest?

I have a fuzzy memory of an "Around the world club" and some cariibean beer called Caribe I think.

Probably. I haven't had either in decades.

Westvleteren Brewery thoughts?  I've never seen them in the USA.  I need to get back to Belgium.

My favorite of the Asian brews is Anker in Indonesia.  I always found Bintang too sweet.  both are preserved with formaldehyde, and given the amount I've drunk over the years, I should live forever.  When in Indonesia and I can't get Anker, I ask for Bali Hai.
Beer Lao was mentioned above - another not bad option.
Don't really like any of the Thai beers, and Tiger is just gross, as is asian heineken.  Carlsberg is more and more prevalent in S.E. Asia and is good there.  San Mig and San Mig Light are not bad.

Nothing better on a 40 degree (C) day in the craziness of India than an ice cold kingfisher.

I will be visiting it in June, along with an overnight at St. Bernardus.
