well its been a while but since hs seasons are ending and recruits will be making their decisions in the near future I decided to create a united 2009 spring recruiting thread. Here are the major recruits Marquette is after, their lists, Marquette's standings, possible commitment times, and players most likely to leave:

Possible Players Leaving
Buzz has continued to recruit and possibilities have anywhere from 1 to 3 players leaving next year and while Hazel seems like an unfortunate candidate to leave the team, Fulce and Cubillan are not out of the realm of possibility either.

2009 Recruits
Darius Smith 6'1" Guard (OFFERED)
•   Rated by BullsEyeBrothers as the best player in the state of Illinois, a four star on Scout, 89 on ESPN, and 3 star (113) on Rivals
•   Gifted defensively and creates alot of the dribble, good slasher
•   the most recruited guard in the country (Duke and Memphis have recently entered the race) and his list remains unclear as double digit teams are still in the hunt
•   While he did visit the AL for the Christmas tournament Marquette is not considered to be a leader and the chances of landing him are small
•   His High School team ended play today and his recruitment should become clearer in the near future
•   http://wisconsin.scout.com/a.z?s=193&p=8&c=1&nid=2431543

DeAndre Kane 6'4" Shooting Guard (OFFERED)
•   Ranked as a 3 Star on Scout, 3 star on Rivals
•   consider a shooter and scorer
•   Recruitment has been very odd to say the least as he has decommited from two different schools meaning he could be more trouble than he's worth
•   Has Mu in his top 4
•   http://duquesne.scout.com/a.z?s=420&p=8&c=1&nid=3224259

Donte Medder 6'2" Point Guard
•   consider by many to be the best uncommited play on the west coast, ranked as a 2 star on Scout (aka not evaluated), not on Rivals, and 90 on ESPN (the only ones to see him play)
•   Has emerged very late onto spot light and is a gritty, defensive minded, pass first point guard
•   Has offers from alot of lower level schools and MU is interested
•   Seems like a talent who slipped through the cracks until recently but probably won't land at MU
•   VIDEO: http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=11&isFirstMediaIdAudioOrVideo=video&playlist=http%3A//scouthoops.scout.com/asxplaylist.aspx%3Fs%3D75%26mediaids%3D649332
•   http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=78118&season=2009&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d78118%26season%3d2009

Glenn Bryant 6'7" Forward
•   3 star (140) on Rivals, 3 star on Scout, 89 on ESPN
•   athletic forward
•   numerous reports have Bryant REALLY liking Marquette and he has already visited once and is looking to visit again
•   If Marquette offers (which they will probably after hearing on Latavious Williams) they are in VERY good position to land Bryant
•   http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=3182233

Latavious Williams 6'8" Forward (OFFERED)
•   5 Star (15th) on Rivals, 4 Star on Scout, 90 on ESPN
•   VERY athletic Forward who is constantly playing above the rim but needs to add weight, could play C here
•   eligibility is in question right now but reports from Latavious are that Memphis, Gtown, and Baylor are all in the lead
•   Plays on the same team and good friends with signed Junior Cadougan, already visited with team for tournament, may visit in the next few weeks as his season is over
•   http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=59505&season=2009&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d59505%26season%3d2009

Those are the five names that Marquette has shown up with in the past few months and in the next few weeks we should find out where everyone falls. My prediction? I could see any 1 or 2 player combination of Kane, Bryant, Williams, or another guard signing with us. Should be an interesting couple of weeks...

rocky_warrior

Thanks for the summary bleedbluegold03 WadeTheWarrior.

After the report tonight fron the BET about Bryant, I'm most optimistic about landing him.

However, Latavious sounds like the real deal too
http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball_recruits/latavious_williams

Nonetheless, if we manage to sneak in as a top choice.  I wouldn't mind getting another (top) guard in Smith

If Hazel leaves and one scholarship available, then immediately take Smith or Williams.  If they go elsewhere, bank the scholy for 2010.  No need for Kane or Medder, need to go after higher ranked guards in 2010 class.

ATWizJr

Take Smith or Williams?  We are not the leader for Smiith.  Will he be there when it's our turn to draft?

Wording, ugh.   If we are not the leader for Smith, then why even list him at all.  Are we the "leader" for anyone?

BrewCity83

This is starting to sound a bit like the '70's...Al McGuire said that in the later years he transformed from a "Recruiter" to a "Selecter".

Probably Bryant.

Smith hasn't given an update since his season started, and back then we were not the leader.  His list has expanded more since then, so there's no way to know.  Latavious Williams left us off his most recent list a little more than a week ago.

muwarrior87

we aren't to that point. But yeah, Allie, Butch, and other players became ambassadors to the program and were able to bring players in just because of that.  Hopefully this can start to happen with the recruits we're bringing in and Buzz, while a great recruiter, can focus more on the in game coaching aspects.  Becoming a perennial top 20 program can help to do this though.

GOMU1104

Fulce and Cubillian aren't going anywhere.  Fulce and Buzz are joined at the hip. Cubi is set to be a Senior...where is he going to go?

As for the recruits...(my order of prefrence)
-Darius Smith is the crown jewel. His season is finally over, so you would think there will be some news on him soon.
-Donte Medder is a nice looking PG. Late bloomer who is getting attention. Would fill a need.
-Latavious Williams...very talented, but alot of issues. Very close to Cadougan, which could help.
-Glenn Bryant is a nice athlete, but I dont see him doing anythnig more than dunking. It wouldn't be bad to grab an Oak Hill guy though...

No interest in Deandre Kane...talk about an "interesting" recruitment.

MR.HAYWARD

lets not forget about Vee Snaford a kentucky guard who has really opened eys, not sure where he stands or how good he truly is but some decent schools are sniffing around

If we sign two more players then Hazel and ??

Other potentials no specific order

Acker = graduation
Cubie= ??
Otule = ??

Fulce and Buzz relationship strong, a healthy Joe will contribute

muwarrior87

Cubillan would not leave with only one year of eligibility left.  Otule is also a Buzz recruit.  Acker may decide to move on after getting his degree which would mean another point guard would be very important.  I'd rather not speculate now though. Let's focus on the game at hand today and see what happens the rest of the season.  April is a time for speculation.

Why would Acker leave with the economy in the tank the way it is right now?  He could use all next year to play ball and practice rather than study.

the man would be living the DREAM.

I don't know why he would but last year during the end of the year picnic when Buzz said Acker was on pace to graduate spring '09 and then take graduate classes his senior season, Acker had this face that said, "yeah right coach" on it.  I'm not saying he'll be gone for sure but it is a possibility. Plus, playing Jerel's sidekick is probably near the top of his list of things to do. He may still be here next year and I for one hope he is. He isn't the best pg to have but the experience, especially early, will help. I'm already fine with the class we have coming in and would be ok with one more but I don't really know where people are coming from thinking 2 more will come in.

He can't just play, if he stays he has to enroll in classes.  Doesn't necessarily have to be graduate classes, he could work on a second major or something, but he's got be in class and doing well enough to not hurt the APR.

BrewCity83

I heard thet Jerel's got only one class, only one day a week this semester.  That doesn't sound like too bad of a gig.

right, and he could do the whole one class a week and then abandon the second major at the end of the year. ;)

reinko

Just like how Matt Leinhart was enrolled in classes his senior year aka taking ballroom dancing once a week.

ecompt

I believe the NCAA stops checking after first semester. So Mo could take the Carmelo Anthony route (phys. ed., Introduction to Lunch), then skate through the second semester, perhaps just repeating the Lunch course. Hey, it works at Syracuse.

Tulsa Warrior

This is about life.  Acker needs to stay in school and work on a master's degree.  With the economy where it is staying in school and waiting things out would be my advice if I were his dad.  Basketball is a means to an end.  A Marquette Master's degree would be worth more to him in the end than anything else he could do.

jfmu

if hazel is out id take bryant and a guard. i love bryants athleticism

VwArrior1

In Bryant's videos he looks a lot like stanley robinson just dunking it every time.

MR.HAYWARD

thats not really a highlight video he really dunks it every time he touches it, really.

I could see Cube leaving if he feels he needs another year to properly recover from his shoulder surgeries. Remember, if he transfers he has to sit out a year, so for someone with some fairly serious injuries, that could be a positive.

Plus with the players that Buzz has coming in its not clear that Cube will see the floor next year. If he really believes he can play, it may make sense for him to transfer for his senior year... kinda like Robert Jackson did.

Downside for Cubes is that he most likely transfers to a worse basketball program with a bad academic reputation. Kid will never play professionally, so if I were him I would stay and get a degree that is worth something and has great alumni connections vs. transferring to play one year at Bumblef__k State.

But we aren't Cubes... maybe he really wants to play one whole season of college basketball as a starter.
