I am 76.
Last time there was a scoop demographics poll I was still in the 20s group :'(
Thanks for the reminder that I moved up a bracket this year
I'm still 29 after all these years.
71 next month.

A/S/L everyone. Let's pretend we're in an AOL chat room one last time
It is not polite to ask one's age, mainly because it prompts the "oh s#@!--I'm not that old" response. I get enough of that in daily life. Don't need it here in the imaginarium.

My wife and I look a lot younger than our age, but when I went totally gray in my mid 40s I was getting senior citizen discounts without being asked.

How is this unfortunate? You make more money, the money you made before is still taxed at the same rate, and only the new money you've added is taxed at the higher rate. It's not like you make an extra $1000, it bumps you into a higher bracket, and then ALL of your earnings are taxed at a higher rate.

I really miss Hegarty's. After Angelo's closed, it was sort of the last link with the old MU era for current students. It was a huge part of my social life when I was there during the Crean era. The food was decent, the beer was cheap, a valid ID was optional, had great pool table, pin ball/arcade games, a great mix of students and locals, and had been there forever. It was the real deal. We certainly frequented Murphy's and Caffrey's but Hegarty's was always choice A1.

Closed Hegarty's every Sunday for a semester. It is where I went for a pitcher and pool when a professor failed to show up for a final at Johnston Hall. When called at home, he said he would be there in an hour. Only one thing to do...
It is where we had a study session for a poli sci final. The professor was only at MU for a year. He was plied with Guinness and gave us all of the answers he wanted in our blue books. He showed up for the final hung over and a little put out that we were all so chipper. An hour later, aced final.
Two years living in Tower, Hegarty's was home.

I'm class of 97 but I firmly believe The 80's were MU's Golden Age.
The campus finally took shape with N-S street closures, bars were a plenty, food spots were legendary and MU was still sort of a basketball brand (UNC at the MECCA in '86 was something).
Also Badger Football (basketball) hadn't woken up yet. The Badgers becoming a powerhouse shifted a lot fans over IMO. They're easily the #2 brand in the state now. It wasn't always that way.

That whole school year they were throwing all sorts of ideas at the wall trying to turn it around. One example was Fridays when a $5 wristband got you free hot dogs and $.25 beers all night. Lots of contests, too, and very low attendance led to a lot of drinks and parties won by my friend group.
They announced they were closing after the end of the school year. Then suddenly word was spreading on a Wednesday that it was the last night. At close that night they announced they weren't getting evicted until noon, so they'd open back up at 8 AM.

Creighton is my second favorite team in the Big East. My dad graduate from Creighton in 1940. He truly believed a Jesuit education was the best education you can get, because of his college experience. That is why he sent me to MUHS and MU. It is also why he became an MU season ticket holder. My uncle Fr. Bernard Portz, S.J taught one year (1960?) at MUHS. Later he taught math and music at Creighton University.
My dad was given a scholarship to Creighton University. He told me more than once he turned down the scholarship, because he wanted to go to the Creighton's business school and the scholarship was for a different curriculum. After he passed away, I found the invoice for his first semester of tuition. It was for $40. I sure that was a lot of money during the depression, but it shows how much the cost of things have changed.

A lot of MUHS guys around my age went to Creighton. I was a Pius guy, but I think 90% of my grade school class of boys were Hilltoppers.

How is this unfortunate? You make more money, the money you made before is still taxed at the same rate, and only the new money you've added is taxed at the higher rate. It's not like you make an extra $1000, it bumps you into a higher bracket, and then ALL of your earnings are taxed at a higher rate.
(I teach HS Econ and this is a concept many of my students just don't understand)
You may wish to teach your students about inflation pushing salaries up to higher tax brackets. Yes you earn more but less valuable dollars over time that are tax incrementally at a higher tax rate.
More dollars are alone meaningless. Unfortunately dollar earnings are higher but buying power is generally in decline. Greater buying power after taxes and inflation is what we wish to achieve. Oh, and by the way, inflation rates calculations have changed over the years so that inflation numbers can under estimate the actual numbers.

Used to frequent a place up Wells St called Mike's Talk of the Town for pitchers of gin and tonic!
i managed the "talk of the town" my year and a half before going into dental school. wasn't very popular among MU students. had 2 record players we would play spin tunes in between shakes of bar dice with patrons. the owner expected us to "sacrifice" our livers for the business and we happily obliged. don't know how we did it, but drank until closing time, then hit the after hours parties and living to talk about it

4 years of Hank for me, too. As a head coach, he was a great assistant (and a good guy)! Highlights were Rivers' shot against ND and our take-down of Duke (Gminski, Banks, etc) at the Dane County Coliseum.
Frequented most of the same places you did, but also Harp & Shamrock, Midget Tavern, State House (my best friend tended bar there), Kiernans and Hegartys.
Man, was college effen fun!
Started dating my eventual wife my senior year (her junior year). And like Goose and a couple others here, I was a youngish dad -- 2nd kid born just after I turned 27. Now I get to be the young, cool grandpa! (Or at least young-adjacent and cool in my own mind.)

74 and will be 75 in early April. Marquette was such an important part of my long-gone youth, and in following the team I get to savor at least part of my time there. Without going into details, me pre-MU and me- post MU are hardly recognizable as the same person. I changed so much!

85 going on 86. Enrolled at MU in 1955 and lived in Monitor Hall (on 16th across from Engine House). Jack Nagle was coach and had a great year in 55. Also was there for Ed Hickey. He had a couple of great teams. Remember the 3-lane fast break? Had season tickets for over 25T years starting in about 62. Hard to remember details now. Tickets at the Arena were behind the south basket, row 11. So close you could almost smell the sweat.

Reminds me, the Lighthouse was $69.50 each for 10 of us...plus utilities, which could be another $50-75 apiece as I remember. What a drafty place that was in the winter. We kept it at 59 degrees during winter because of the expense. Good times.

I knew I met the perfect woman when she would go to every MU game with me back in the 1980's. The first night I ever made her dinner was the night we lost to UNC in '86. I was on a three day bender and was hoping for the upset to avoid being the chef that night. That game is still probably my favorite memory of a loss. To call the atmosphere electric would be an understatement.
My wife, then girlfriend, started the weekend by helping me sell retro NCAA championship tshirts at The Gym Bar and I will never forget it. Plus, Majerus stopped in to help promote the tshirts. I wish I would have had 500 instead of 200 printed up.
I should add that my girlfriend also was a big help to me in selling the original "The Bears Still Suck" tshirts and bumper stickers, during that same time period. Unfortunately we got shutdown after about nine months by NFL properties.

I am still 54 (turning 55 soon). Attended Marquette from September 94 through May 97. Drove out to Milwaukee from Southern California without ever having visited campus. Very excited to be there and was placed in Schroeder Hall for a week before my permanent spot in the old YMCA building (now Straz Tower???) was assigned to me. That place is still the smallest place I have ever lived. Was it 100 square feet? Just enough space for a single bed and a desk. From there I "moved up" to the Biltmore Apartments. By the time I got there, the Biltmore was on its last legs. Soon to be demolished, nothing was repaired unless absolutely necessary. The bathroom sink had separate faucets, one for hot water and one for cold. After the Biltmore I moved to the East Side where I lived on Frederick Street for my final year in Milwaukee.
Does anyone remember a place called Theo's? It was on Wisconsin Ave near the library. When I lived in the YMCA building it was a short walk for me and my buddies, so we went there quite a bit. Played many songs on the jukebox over and over again. We knew a foreign exchange student from Japan who spoke very little English, but knew all the words to "bad to the bone." B-b-b-b-ad.
Can't believe so much has changed since then. The Biltmore, Theo's both gone (not just closed but the buildings demolished). Progress!!!

I knew a handful of people on this board before I joined scoop - one I am married to. I have met others subsequently and consider them my friends.
And even though I have never revealed my last name and my first name only a handful of times, I once had a man approach me at a non-basketball alumni event and say, "Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your posts on MUScoop." That was a little creepy.

Wolfie was a great guy. Admirable as a young man, leading the rugby team and even more as an adult. An honest and solid influence for young men with little direction.

I remember showing up at move in day at MU. Outside of McCormick there were people high fiving each other and I remember thinking "WTF, I'm really behind meeting people". They were all FFP freshmen who knew each other from the summer and had a blast. I ended up marrying one though and am friends with most of them in my class to this day. FFP was a great program.

Cool to have yet another big overlap, Manny. It was cool when Tower and I realized that we'd been posting similar thoughts and ended up that we lived on the same floor at McCormick in 84-85. To your descriptionr to your son, I'd add that it was overlooking the Ardmore (from my room 703) or the span of Wells Street (from, what, 711 to 729?) or down to Schroeder to across Wisconsin to campus (715 to 730?) How many rooms were on each floor in McCormick? Counting, or not, the quads just across from the elevators. What fun, what memories, and what a life changing experience MU was.
Someone mentioned playing pool on Fridays at Brooks Memorial Union. Damn was that a thing for me and my roommates. Of course, my Scoop name is from my Mugrack days, and I was active in ASMU and so was happy to have a desk right near the Mugrack, the pool tables and the stage ("Da Bodeans" had some of their earliest performances there).
I've not seen anyone mention Block Party yet. Our class saw the end of it. We had Fall '84 and Spring '85, then was Fall '86 the last Block Party? I don't recall the specifics, but remember realizing that it was the end of an era.

Freshman year at the Mecca, sophomore year opened the Bradley Center.
Ate numerous breakfasts with Bob Dukiet in the McCormick dining hall. Not a great coach but he was always nice to the MU students.
Took the Hegartys bus to Notre Dame my freshman year to catch the ND-MU game. Had a keg in the back of the bus and stopped at every rest area along the way.
Missed the Block Party's, but enjoyed numerous Mr. Jiggle's Jamborees - at the Milwaukee Domes and the lakefront (Milwaukee Gun Club???)
Worked at the Mugrack in BMU and The Pub in AMU. Lots of good bands played the unions on Friday nights - Blake Babies, Sonic Youth, Soul Asylum, Goo Goo Dolls, to name a few.
Won a bong once at the raffle at Green Tree. Also frequented the usual haunts - Lanche, Murphys, OD's, O'Paguets, Ardmore, Glocca Mora, Theos, Hegartys, Good Time Charlies, etc.
Listened to Gerald Posey tell a group of us about his wild recruitment stories and how he ended up at MU (basically Dukiet was the only guy who didn't offer him money), but he left MU the following year.
Loved going to the basketball games, even though our class has the worst winning percentage for MU basketball since World War II.

I originally signed up with Rocky's Buy One Get One Black Friday Sale deal. Gave the other membership to my wife for Christmas. She loved it. Best $10,000 I ever spent.
Graduated MU in 99.
Freshman year was 93/94 last Warrior class. Lived in O'Donnell 2nd floor Freshman year.
Lived at home my 2nd year, my parents lived across the 16th street bridge on 22nd & Pierce I would sometimes walk to school if the weather wasn't too crappy. Year 3 I took a break from school. Too much partying and having fun year 1 & 2. Needed some time to really think about whether college right was for me or not. Came back year 4, lived at 1425 Kilbourn. Years 5 & 6 was technically living at home again with my parents but most of the time I would crash with friends on campus. Didn't drink at the campus bars too often but spent way too much money eating at Louie D's, Real Chili and Marquette Gyros.

Sadly, too much of that generation of Warriors has passed away. The youngest would be about 83 and most are in their mid 80s or later. This was a generation that often attended Marquette on the GI bill (arising from either World War II -- early in the decade -- or Korea). Or they worked most of their time in college. They were a pretty serious bunch of people.
My Dad was the working student. His family lost their business in the early 1950s and moved to Texas. Dad worked road crews in East Texas to save money for a down payment on his education and for train fare to Milwaukee to enroll in the College of Engineering. There was no SATs and ACTs in those days and Marquette initially wouldn't enroll him because he didn't have the money or a job. He went to the Post Office and was accepted for the post office, where he worked for the father of Father John Naus, SJ. He came back and paid his tuition on installments for four years.
Marquette was a simpler, more personal place in those days, judging from Dad's stories. The way they treated him was legendary and Dad never forgot it.
Dad had several great stories about going to Marquette in the 1950s. One was where his best friend from Superior came down to visit. They partied the way folks party in Superior (early and often and way early into the morning) and showed up at Gesu for Mass mid-morning. About a third of the way through the homily, Dad's friend fell asleep and snored so loudly that he shook Gesu. The presiding priest saying Mass looked down from the pulpit and asked, "are we disturbing him?"
Chili, you knew the snorer!
Another was that a Jesuit, I believe Dad described him as Father Hockhaus (Sp?),who would work the streets and talk to the students about "what they were doing". The priest apparently had a good way with college students and was very approachable. By the end of the conversation, Father asked the student, "OK, we're halfway done, do you want to finish Confession?" He worked the streets that are now the MU mall hearing confessions.
Probably the best though was he was pulled over for speeding in a mail van -- with the woman who became my Mother in the back! As the Milwaukee police officer approached him, Dad yelled at my Mother to "give me that bag." The police officer approached Dad, who said, "I have to deliver this to the train station as soon as possible. It's really important!" The officer gave my Dad a police escort across town to the Milwaukee Train Station. Dad raced in, threw the bag to the stationmaster and said, "I'll be back in a half hour for it." He thanked the police officer and my Mother, the latter for keeping quiet. He waited for the police officer to disappear and went back for his mailbag!
Dad never spoke much about football -- he probably was working or studying. From what he talked, he probably saw a couple of MU basketball games in his days, but they weren't the spectacle they became after Coach McGuire arrived (Dad did see as many MU games as he could living in Tennessee over the years).
My Dad received his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1955. He died in 2018.
Great stories Dgies! Thank you for sharing.

dgies - Unless there was another Jesuit that followed in his foot steps, I believe he was Fr. McEvoy who did the same thing while I was at MU (63 - 68). At that time we were required to attend a weekend retreat once a year and the retreat he held was always full.

Class of 1991
3rd Floor McCormick
3rd Floor Schroeder
Hell House
Love Aprtments
1991 and very similar to Norm.
9th Floor McCormick Freshman year9th Floor Schroeder Sophomore year - I had a bad lottery number and ended up in the other wing from my fellow 9th floor McCormick friends. I knew there was going to be an issue when a Junior was my roommate and he installed a giant spotlight over his desk that can probably be seen by boats on Lake Michigan. He also was aghast that a student under 21 would bring beer into the dorm. (Why was he in a Sophomore dorm, and where was he the last 2 years on beer in a Marquette dorm!? and why the fascination with Morton Downey Jr.?!) My fellow 9th floor McCormick friend ended up across the hall from me with the same issue. His roommate was a Senior, apparently rarely slept in the dorm room and went home every weekend. It took a few weeks into the semester, but somehow he convinced him to move to Mashuda and I moved across the hall.
15 1/2 Street (the alley) & Kilbourn Junior and Senior year - They tore down my building and now it's apparently the Alpha Phi Eta Mu Chapter House. We used to borrow the floating snow fence, so we could charge admittance and have parties in the backyard parking lot in conjunction with the ROTC House next door.
* My earlier post mentioned Freshman year at the Mecca, sophomore year opened the Bradley Center.
* I was an Assistant Building Manager at the Brooks Memorial Union then at the Alumni Memorial Union when it opened Junior year. I was setting up tables & chairs and breaking down for student club meetings and other events in the building. I should have taken the "promotion" to Building Manager, but I didn't want to work Friday nights for concerts which in hindsight was shortsighted for the bands Norm mentioned. It would have taken away from Happy Hour! Block parties were gone by the time I started MU, but I facilitated acquiring a remnant. After BMU closed and AMU opened, I found out there was a storage room of unused old equipment at the BMU. Only stuff still in use was moved to the AMU. One on my roommates worked part time for some Milwaukee beer distributor and talked about how it would be great if we had a portable cold tap for our weekly "Quarterbarrel Wednesday" event and general weekend keg use. I mentioned I saw one in an abandoned BMU
outside storage area and I arranged an Ocean's 11 unlocked door on a Friday and relocking on Monday. (It was cooler with a metal plate full of tubes on the bottom and spigot on the side.)
* Weekend nights always started at the Green Tree for $3 all you can drink, where a note from your dog could get you in. Sophomore year (I think unless Junior?) we even trekked to the GT over the viaduct when they were forced to close and reopen elsewhere. Also frequented the usual haunts - 'Lanche, Murphy's, OD's, O'Paget's, Ardmore, Hegarty's and The Gym. Somehow my ID got me into the 'Lanche all the time, but never worked at The Gym as both were known difficult to get in with a fake.
* Mr. Jiggles at the Dome and then later at the Gun Club property on Like Michigan. (A day of music, beer and 'schrooms per my Freshman year RA.) I saw a drunk person (did not look like a student) fall on a bonfire on the Dome grounds?
Thanks for the making reach deep into the memory banks.

I remember Father "Mac" well. My frosh year ('66-67) was the last one requiring a retreat. He ran our retreat. He told us that he had heard everything in confession, including someone who said "Father, I f**ked a sheep." Mac ran the Dental School's grille, a tiny place. He saw me nearby and simply told me to help him out. I flipped burgers for the next hour and a half, got a free lunch and a handful of money that he grabbed from the register drawer gave me as pay. I believe that he was nearly blind at the time, yet somehow managed to get around.

MU Scoop isn't a popular forum?!?
Guys, thank you.
We were very much a Marquette family when I was young and the loyalty Marquette showed to Dad was repaid many times over. Honestly, loyalty was collectively something very important to my parents' generation.
My Dad was heartbroken beyond belief when, after helping a very low-income young woman get a full free ride to Marquette in Engineering in the late 1960s, she called him with a great deal of remorse and told him she had elected to go to Cornell in Engineering. Dad was happy for the young woman but came home that night and said, "Cornell? Why? Yuck!!!" My Mother reminded him that the young lady had just accepted an admission to an Ivy League school and all Dad could say was, "it wasn't Marquette," and "Marquette would be better for her as a person."
A Warrior to the end!
Probably the best stories from the 1950s would have come from my mother's best friend and maid of honor at her's and my Dad's wedding ... Catherine Collins. Catherine attended Marquette in the early 1950s after being graduated from Cathedral High up in Superior. Catherine was in O'Donnell Hall either the first or second year it was operational. That must have been worth a few beers! Sadly, Catherine died in 1974 from leukemia. Mom came home from her funeral the night I received my acceptance letter from Marquette.
P.S. -- Dad was partner in an Engineering firm based in Chicago and recruited Marquette engineers for co-ops and for permanent employment. I worked one summer with a couple of them and they were the guys most likely to give me crap because I was the Boss' kid. Man, they were tough. Though, it was nice to every now and then when I was in college, run into someone who, when I introduced myself, asked, "are you Frank's son. I co-oped in Nashville last year!"

I love the way you speak about your Mom and Dad. My Mom and Dad would be about ten years older than your folks, but I always loved hearing their stories from when they were younger. Neither of them attended college, but all four of their kids are MU grads and married MU grads.
IMO, loyalty should be important to every generation. Sadly, to some it is a forgotten art.

Four MU here (the two "heretics" went to St. Thomas College and the College of St. Scholastica). Three MU spouses plus Dad made eight of us.

I think the booths at the Annex now are from the Mug Rack. Mug Rack was a cool place. Jammed but cool!
If those were the booths made in 83 or 84, they were crafted with assistance by some of the finest workers beer could buy. ;D

This honestly sounds like my mom's family. 5/7 went to Marquette. The exceptions were SLU and Northwestern. Evidently back in the day, if you had multiples at MU, you got $100 off tuition, which was a big deal to my grandfather.

I've heard that story a few times. Hooks was a gem. Superior, through and through.

I had a brother in med school and another one was a senior. My tuition was discounted my freshman year. I remember it being something like $650 per semester + $900 for the year at Schroeder, room and meals. I think tuition going up to about $850 per semester after they graduated.

Gee, when I started this thread I never expected a Scoop grand reunion. Glad everyone is having fun.
I have to say, Warrior69, for me this is by far the most fun thread started on Scoop in a long, long time.
Thanks again.
Class of '61. Lived through the Johnny Druze football fiasco, the return of Lisle "Liz" Blackbourn, and both his and MU's final football season.

Some statistics about the Scoopers who answered this poll:
* The weighted average age, using the "5" value as a midpoint and evaluating all of the answers to this poll is 48.9 years (we're old).
* If the answers in this poll are to be believed, roughly 82 percent of Scoopers entered Marquette after coach McGuire left Marquette. That too, makes sense. Ya'll missed out on some really great Marquette basketball.
* 55.2 percent of the poll answers entered Marquette since Bob Dukiet was terminated. Boy have ya'll been on a roller coaster.
Interesting group!

Wait - you counted "under 19" as 9.5 year olds? that would bring down the average.

Well; class of 87 (I'm 57) for me. I miss dollar imports at the Ardmore but happy the place has a bar there. Every place I lived in is now gone, from McCormick Hall to the Trebor apartments to the house next to The Rugby House on 19th St. I was involved in ASMU on the programming board and there when sadly The Block Party had to be axed due to no liability insurance Still had a lot of fun, and now have a daughter there (my youngest) and she loves Marquette. Have plans to go to the Depaul game with her Saturday
I was the guy who handed out bags of marshmallows at the Varsity theater before Ghostbusters with spectacular results.
Maybe I am misremembering, but didn't the Ardmore have a round the world club?

Sure, but if you assume all 3 are 15+, we're over 49. hah. I think dgies just wants to round down!

We know Rico is 13, so that's gonna pull the average down for sure.

I think he also weighted by IQ.
For the 19 year olds, we assumed 18 was the midpoint age. Did the same on the 90+ crowd, which I think was falsely reported data. The 90+ crowd was assumed to be 91.
The data would not be materially skewed due to these brackets.

I remember Theos well. Hung out there a ton when I lived at the Y. John Garakas was the owner.
I also fondly remember Theo's. It was one of the easiest places to get into with my horrible freshman year fake ID. I recall a place called After 10 over there as well. It was near the Badger Bus depot. Great memories.

Alright, I'm not crazy. Theoswas a fake I'd bar.
We just had no chill.
Class of '86 here. One semester in Schroeder, three in Tower, room 1610 if I recall, and four in the Ardmore, second floor. Loved the Ardmore. What was really cool is we could get to the bar without having to go outside. LOL. It's the little things. And yes, they did have an around the world deal. Oh and after bar chimi's at Angelos? Deep fried and served with a sour cream cup. I think they were good. LOL Loved the NC game. My roommate and I dressed up in full face paint for that one. So frigging close to winning that game. Lot's of fun. Loved the old block parties. It was a shame those went away, but I get it. Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows! They rocked. So awesome.
I had a roommate and good friend who tended bar at the Ardmore while going to MU back in the 70's. To this day my bride of 41 years swears that we never went on a date - just me at the bar where we could drink for free.
Is she wrong?
