Just saw the Golden Eagles Alumni are signing up again. Any chance we get a Novak Diener and Wade reunion? (obviously kidding about Wade)
Who's looking like they're available?
Hoping for at least DJO, Wilson, Vander, Buycks, Hayward and Mcneal. Gotta bump our talent level up to at least our borderline NBA players.
-
Need some size.

Would love to see Gardner, Fischer, or Ooze get a shot.

All of those guys have logged NBA minutes.
Actually, as I was typing that, I don't know if DJO ever logged an official NBA minute. I think he may have only played preseason.

Djo logged 21 minutes over 7 games.

DJO did great this year in G League and Italy. Hopefully we get him on the time this year.

That's why I called them borderline. None of them stuck. Seems like the teams that get there are loaded with former pros and outside of Travis and Steve there's no former nba players from MU that're still in playing shape (ok, wade) so next tier down is the best bet I figure.

Wade could play...but I'd bet Rowsey will.
-
I can't imagine Wade playing.
The team needs size and shooting. Otule and/or Fisher and Davante would really help. The shooting aspect would help if Rowsey and Novak join - and need Mo Acker to play again.
The core of DJO, McNeal, Buycks are all basically the same player. Need them, but need diversity!

Didn't DJO back out last year? but yeah good point, plus it's dawning on me that Mcneal is getting up there in age also

We need to reunite JJJ and Duane on our squad.

Think it had to do with OX getting married and then his suspension?

Will Marquette host a Big East Alumni pod again or one of our rivals?
-
Will Marquette host a Big East Alumni pod again or one of our rivals?
Doesn't sound like it. They have 8 regionals selected to host the first 2 rounds.
-
They are not hosting this year. In fact the nearest region is Ohio. However, the Championship Weekend bracket (actually longer than a weekend) with the Elite 8 going to Chicago August 1-6.
-
MU has been close the last couple years. If they want to seal the deal they need to add Novak, Ficsher, gardner and diener again, plus DJO, Buycks, Wilson, Blue, Rousey and maybe Mcneal and or Acker?

Has a team option with the knicks that would have to be rejected, then have no other team sign him. Little to zero chance he plays on the tbt team even if no one signs him.

Duane graduated and was at MU for 4 years . Was going to be behind Markus and Rowsey . So he Took an opportunity that was available .
Duane’s Dad runs a respected AAU program. No reason to inflame relations.
MU was promoting the whole TBT thing last. Disappointing they theybcoukd not make it work for Duane.

I agree, it ruins it. I've been really pumped about this tournament every year previously but this time I'm pretty apathetic. Rowsey and Buycks are the only two I am excited to see in an MU jersey again.

Doesn't Dan Fitzgerald control the roster? You'd think a guy that works for MU would at least give MU guys priority.
I'd rather see Niv Berkowitz over Cook or Bowers.

Agreed, and its not like Cook and Bowers are the second coming of Curry and Durant

Technically yes but they are supplying training facility and last year were promoting it. Just plain dumb all the way around not to fill it with our own guys.

That seems exceptionally harsh considering the situation. Isn't his degree worth as much as yours?

This should actually be a rule of this tournament..Your team must consist of players that attended that school. No outside players.

Since the teams don’t have to be college alumni teams, anyone could just rename their team to be unaffiliated with the college. I like that they represent Marquette. I’m sorry they didn’t ask Duane to play.
-
I've talked to Fitz about the roster construction in past years. They invite most if not all of the guys that we'd like to see. If they're not playing it's likely because they can't or don't want to.
Not sure about the Duane situation. Hard to believe the MU team would turn him down though?

TBT was never intended to be a "get the band back together" tournament for college teams, although some early teams were constructed that way.
There's a whole lot of money at stake, so if you're going to play with the intention to win, the roster needs to be balanced. And judging from past champions, size matters. Which is why an Elgin Cook might get a spot over Du Wilson, whether we like it or not. Who knows if there are other things at issue (availability, requested cut of the pie, etc.), but this isn't just a fun run for these guys, so I can see where brand loyalty might need to fall by the wayside.

I mean I get it 100%, it would just add a lot to it to me if they were all alumni teams. They just gotta get D Wade to play now :)

Overseas Elite & Eberlein Drive would be hard pressed to put teams together. Team Challenge ALS even more so, especially if only players with ALS were allowed to play.
-
I believe Cook and Bowers have Milwaukee ties.
It’s a bummer Duane isn’t on the team. I think as some of the nostalgia wears off, it’s tougher to get guys. Especially as some are still trying to make the NBA or play overseas. I think the last few years there’s been a lot of guys who signed up but never played or dropped out midway through to join a pro team.
-
Technically yes but they are supplying training facility and last year were promoting it. Just plain dumb all the way around not to fill it with our own guys.
Not just technically yes, just yes yes. The roster is determined by the guys on the team. I don't know why Duane wasn't invited but the other players determined that they wanted other players more. Maybe it's a balance thing. Maybe it's a other players are better thing. Maybe the guys don't along with Duane for some reason. If you guys could select any former MU players for next year's TBT team who would you pick? I'm discounting the guys currently under NBA contracts.
I'd go:
Dwyane Wade
Dominic James
Travis Diener
Steve Novak
Davante Gardner
Andrew Rowsey
Jerel McNeal
DJO
Ousmane Barro
Lazar Hayward
Luke Fischer
EDIT: Forgot Jerel

I thought Duane did a great job his final season till he got injured and the team was winning . Always was there in the clutch seems like that is the kind of guy we want . Not Jake Thomas . The promoter of this TBT team needs his head examined.

Duane was a kid who was all about the team and winning. Buzz red shirted him the freshman year due to the stress fracture, even though he could have played part of the way through. The kid played hard and tough nosed basketball , had a very solid red shirt freshman season, then had some chronic leg injury problems the hampered his performance the next season. His final season, Wojo asked Duane to take a different role as a Defensive stopper, which Duane went along with and was very much a supporter of the guys who took his time. It was at that point that I became a big fan of the kid. By the end of the season Duane was actually starting again which showed his character. After he graduated, he had an opportunity to run the offense for a top 25 team and he took it, rather than ride the bench behind Markus and Andrew, I don't think he should be faulted for that. He left with the full support of the coaching staff . A player only gets 4 years to play in college and they want to maximize the opportunity.
-
If I had to guess it’s probably because Duane hasn’t played organized basketball since he got hurt a year and a half ago.
-
Then he abandoned them. Warrior title stripped.
Using this logic any Marquette alum that spent four years at MU, graduated, but then got a masters degree or even took classes from another school betrayed MU and no longer has the right to be a fan.
Why is it that because he played a sport that we hold him to a different level of expected loyalty? I agree that outside of his freshman year he was disappointing though.

I like the TBT concept in general but think it could be executed much better. How about an all alumni division, a 30+ alumni division(previous poster gets the shout out for this), an open division and a ladies division.
It's all about money, sure but IMO ESPN doesn't monetize this to the extent that they could. Do all four divisional championships in Vegas during the Summer sports doldrums. I think it would be fun..
I think college hoops fans would embrace the college divisions..
-
My only interest is to see MU players. Much more interesting to see only alum teams. Becky vs MU all alum teams? Games like that would be interesting

They did the college thing to an extent with a bug east bracket last year. There just isn't enough college teams doing the tbt to make it happen. Marquette with a plethora of players cannot field a team of solely mu players.
-
Duane left. Jake didn't. The former isn't a Warrior. The latter is.
Neither play for Golden State (though they probably could with all of the injuries these days), but if Wilson isn’t a Golden Eagle then Wade isn’t either. He still had eligibility left. He abandoned the 2004 team too, right?
If you graduated, you’re a Golden Eagle for life.

Fluffy, you are SO WRONG on this ridiculous assertion. You understand that Wilson already had a young child while at Marquette, right? After graduation he went somewhere where he thought a 'one year internship' maximized his opportunity to provide for his family down the road. Earning your Marquette diploma makes you a Warrior for life. Full stop.

I'm not bruised and battered in the least. I haven't changed my thought on the matter. I do not cave into the groupthink mentality when it is convenient to do so. I simply agreed to stop arguing about it, so I am.
And it would do you well to be less obsessed with me. I already own your ass enough as it is.

But you never actually argued it with reasoning. You just said he left and that forfeits his Warrior card. But failed to address how him leaving was any different than a standard student going somewhere else for a grad degree.
Repeating your point without explaining the thought process or logic behind it isn't arguing it's being stubborn

I really don’t care enough to have any sort of logic behind my opinion. And I don’t care enough to use logic to convince you otherwise.

At first glance, when I saw those uniforms on Facebook, I thought there were new MU uniforms for next season. I was very relieved when I realized they were for TBT.

Shorts look nice. Shirts look... Uhhh... European?

I really don’t like the shorts. At all. I thought the jersey was ok, but the shorts were awful.

I thought the shorts were watermarked with the old golden eagle. now that i see them better I'm disappointed.

At least there's no bald eagle in the logo like there was before.

The shorts make up for the diagonal type on the jersey.

Not happy that our team dissed Swaggy Du. He really wanted to represent MU and they filled it with guys not from MU. Not a good look. Especially when your team GM is affiliated with the school.

No, they don't play until next Friday. Looks like online only. I wonder if ESPNU might pick it up locally.

Nope. No such thing in that.
Streaming on ESPN3 at 6pm on Friday. With a win, Saturday on ESPN @ 1pm.
Of course many of the new tv's has the app built in. Roku or Chromecast are other ways to watch on your big screen.

That's a significant reason why I don't watch. If the tourney was set up so that teams all had to be alumni of a particular school (or maybe allow smaller conferences have a team represent the conference), I'd get more excited. School pride, rivalries and all that.
But with the Marquette team not just guys from Marquette, and with guys from Marquette playing on other teams, it's about as exciting to me as the summer league...which I never bother to watch.
But I do kinda like the shorts.

I'll be watching as well but it's a valid complaint when a team claiming to be the golden eagles alumni has three non MU guys.
As far as DJO goes that's a weird complaint.

Glow and I have gone to the first round the last two years - last year at the Al and the year before at Bradley in Peoria. It's a blast. It's very casual. Lots of opportunities to interact with the players and a good way to see your favorite ones up close at an extremely reasonable price.

In some ways Peoria was even more fun because the guys really enjoyed interacting with the handful of MU fans that attended. I had a very nice chat with Jerel and he was genuinely pleased that we had made the drive down from Chicago to watch them all play. But perhaps the highlight was watching Jamil jawbone with some trash talking SLU guys in the stands. I 'think' it was all in good fun but Wilson made sure to take out any real animosity on the court. Seeing some really high end hoops that up close and personal is a good time.

As much as I like Buycks, Jamil. Rowsey , Juan etc. On principal I have to boycott any team that takes Derrick and Jake Thomas and a bunch of non MU guys over Swaggy Du, who actually really wanted to be on this team. The GM of the team has no common sense, and it is astonishing that he actually represents the school in an official capacity .

Derrick averaged 16.5/5/5 with 2.8stls this year and shot 38% from 3.
Duane hasn’t played organized basketball in what, a year and a half?
These guys are trying to win money Herman. And Derrick is a better player.

I know Fitzgerald's title is "GM" but you are severely overestimating the decision power he has. Roster decisions are made by the players. Buycks, Jamil, Rowsey, Juan, etc, the players you love seeing, they are the ones who picked Derrick, Jake, and a bunch of non-mu guys over Duane. For whatever reason, they didn't want him on the team as much as other guys. Stop trying to make this a marquette decision when it was a player decision.

-
Did you get incorrect information about Duane and the player selection process?
Duane was very upset about the process. He publicly posted he was salty about it .
Thankfully they came to their senses( or someone couldn't make it ) and it appears he is a part of the team on some level.
I have great respect for how Duane conducted himself at MU, the achievements he made at TAMU before he got hurt and how incredibly hard he has worked to get back into shape. He went down with to Atlanta with JJJ and they played on Lou Williams pro am team in Atlanta and did very well.
Duane is a Marquette and 414 loyalist and even sends his young Kobe to MU camps so just wanted to see MU embrace someone he is putting their heart and soul into it.

In watching some of the games...with the quality of the basketball and the parochial interest in some of the teams (the crowd in Wichita last night was evidence), I have wondered if there would be a path to make this into an actual league that could generate enough interest to make it financially viable. The MU team could play home games at the AL as an example. I know the market is flooded with D league, multiple foreign leagues and levels, etc.....but something resonates differently with seeing popular alumni playing together under the quasi-banner of their former schools or under an umbrella of local geographic interest. It would have to be in the right markets and would have to put enough financial interest in it to retain players on U.S. soil and it would probably still fail, but, just sharing a thought that crossed my mind. Maybe the true allure is the all-in nature of it going on for a few weeks for a million dollar prize....perhaps you could retain that for the league and playoff winner. Just a thought. There is just enough uniqueness coming through in these games that I couldn't help but think maybe there is something to build upon that offers something fresh in the market.
-
the announcers mentioned that each of the 8 regional winners will get 25% of the paid attendance for that region. The number they threw out for the Wichita region is about $80,000 to the winning team.
A little something if they fall short of the $2 million overall winners share.

Wichita was by far the most lucrative of the 8 regions.

I think Elgin Cook played at Milw. Hamilton for Tom Diener alongside Kevon Looney.
Cook transferred for his senior year to Christian Life Center Academy in Houston. Which also was Cadougan's school.
Originally committed to Iowa State, went juco, then surfaced at Oregon.
He lived with his father, Alvin Robertson, while in Houston. Robertson had connections with an assistant at Oregon.

Elam ending is the best
In close games, it's great. In blowouts, I don't like it as much. Not sure why, but the increase from 7 to 8 has led to far more exciting Elam finishes this year. I liked it last year, but it lost its luster when the margins got big. This year has seemed exciting continuously.

It's great as it stops the fouling as well as the endless time outs. The last two minutes of a CBB game can be terrible because what you are doing is watching commercials, not basketball.
If the NCAA does not adopt the Elam ending, it should look into ways to speed up the end of the game.

I think quarters and the five foul bonus per quarter, with two shots, come first. Plus, they could speed up the replay system by charging time outs.

A number of games last year, especially with big leads, just devolved to the team in the lead repeatedly launching long threes to try to end the game sooner and the team trailing repeatedly launching long threes to play catch-up.
It's great when it's close and both teams are still playing, but a few of those games turned into ugly brickfests. But that doesn't make it a perfect solve that I want to see adopted universally.

The Wichita site sold really well because they held it in their full size arena and in addition to WSU fans, they also had teams from Kansas & K-State there. I think most of the sites were smaller arenas (like the Al) and didn't have as many large, local fanbases.

Duane would be very valuable because when it gets to the end of the game, Swaggy can play both ways. Derrick(no O) , Acker/Rowsey (no D) and have to be switched in and out. Gets tricky when the time outs run out.

Anyone know why he isn’t on the team? I saw a picture of them all after practice and he was there but was pretty much the only one not on the actual team.
Likely because they already have Bucyks, Acker and Rowsey filling the same role.

Jerel was also at practices and not on the team. TBT limits roster size and you have to pay for more players. The three guys added outside Marquette were 6'6"+. I would guess they had 8 spots and prioritized adding some size while keeping Marquette guys, most of which have been on the team before (Jamil, Buycks, Derrick, Acker). That left room for one newcomer, and Rowsey is a better shooter.
I would guess the TBT guys are interested and comfortable with Duane but had to make a cutoff somewhere. We have one of the deepest guard pools in TBT. The good news is there are guys like Duane available in the future.
-
I think people have an over-romanticized version of the gifts Duane brings to the table.
-
Let me understand this...we beat a team yesterday sponsored by PRN with the sole purpose of targeting Markus, even with their team name?
Dedication!

I also think we all know there might be some politics here too. My understanding is that Ike Wilson is no fan of Wojo's. While Joe Chapman runs basketball camps with the likes of Steve Novak and Travis Deiner. And of course Dan Fitzgerald is an employee of the University.
Now I don't know how much any of this actually played in the decisions regarding roster, but I don't think it is wrong to say that tensions may exist.

The Wichita site sold really well because they held it in their full size arena and in addition to WSU fans, they also had teams from Kansas & K-State there. I think most of the sites were smaller arenas (like the Al) and didn't have as many large, local fanbases.
To add to this...
Wichita: $96,396
Syracuse: $30,903
Columbus: $21,025
Richmond: $17,349
Memphis: $6226
Lexington: $5343
Greensboro: $3732
Salt Lake: $3584

I liked Duane as a player, thought he was a tough kid and a good teammate who gave everything the coaches asked of him. But he was never more than a role player (and I don't mean that as a big insult -- coaches LOVE players who are willing and able to fill roles, and do so without complaint). I even felt happy for him when he transferred and had some success.
Biggest surprise to me was how poor to mediocre he shot the 3 after shooting something like 50% in high school. Also was a surprisingly bad FT shooter (though I know they don't matta ... except when we needed the points).

He was our second best player on probably the worst team MU's had since Crean's second year. If that doesn't scream star I don't know what does.

1. Duane willingly took a lesser role for the betterment of the team in 2016-17. He started down the stretch toward our tournament run because he was willing to be a glue guy.
2. He was finally healthy for a period during his grad transfer year at TAMU and did very well in a classic point guard role in a team that hovered around the top 10 until he was injured.
3 . He is healthy now and has been working out hard . A healthy Swaggy is a talented Swaggy.

Does he have a job playing hoops overseas this year now that he is healthy?

He was the 8th best player on the team that year. Markus, JaJuan, Rowsey, Fischer, Reinhardt, Hauser, Cheatham. You could even argue Matt Heldt had a better season than him.

He took a glue guy defensive stopper role that does not readily translate into statistics. Bottom line when we got to the most important game of the season he was in the starting lineup .
Also he was not healthy sophomore or junior year.

Exactly. He was a decent option off the bench. That’s pretty much it. Stop making it more than that.

Duane had an outstanding freshman year when he was healthy. Duane had a very outstanding senior year until he got hurt.
Sophomore and Junior year he was hurt.
In D1 when a kid gets hurt it is hard to compete.
If it works differently at St. Norberts let us know.

Actually, his defensive stats were pretty poor that season. He had a good steal% (2nd best behind JJJ) but his points per possession allowed was 2nd worst on the team and his defensive win shares and defensive +/- were both 5th best in a 9 man rotation. Combined with his bad offense, he was clearly one of the last two guys in the rotation.

No one is questioning that Duane wasn't hurt. No one is questioning that if Duane wasn't hurt he could've (or maybe would've is more accurate) been a stud for us. Hell, I don't think it it is a stretch to say that if he was 100% healthy that he could have made the association. But he was hurt and he wasn't a stud because of it.

97 ORtg with an eFG% of 44.6% and turnover rate of nearly 24%. **shrug**

Duane never looked the same to me post injury, which pretty much meant his entire college career. Take away the bounce & explosiveness from a smaller guy and unfortunately his game suffers.
A fully healthy Duane and a fully healthy Fulce are 2 players I really wish we could have seen but never did.

He's 28 and played a lot of professional basketball. Europe, Central America, Asia... I wouldn't count out a guy because of where he played in college.

Yeah, and when you look at the success of Overseas Elite, finding guys who have been consistently playing competitive ball for years might be the recipe for winning this tourney. I'm not going to second-guess the decisions of Fitzgerald & Co. - they've put together good teams thus far. And as much as the prize money is the driver, guys like Fitzgerald and Chapman are probably using this experience as a big resume-builder for their non-playing bball careers. It'd be easier to put together an all-MU squad and call it a day, but actually going out and creating a cohesive team made up of MU and non-MU players is pretty impressive.
-
Yesterday the Overseas Elite team added forward Sam Young, formerly of Pitt. Then Tony Taylor, a guard from George Washington.
Then this morning, dropped Sam Young and added three additional frontcourt players.
Drew Gordon-UCLA/New Mexico,
Jonathon Simmons-Houston, 258 games in NBA, last year with Philly and Orlando
Walter Sharpe-Miss State/UAB; another 6-9 250 guy
-
Best news for the Golden Eagles team is the side of the bracket they are on. Overseas Elite, Eberlein Drive, Loyalty is Love, and Carmen's Crew are arguably 4 of the 5 strongest teams, but our boys only have to play at most one of them and then in the Final. They could probably still benefit from adding a player or two.
-
Yesterday the Overseas Elite team added forward Sam Young
I think the TBT should have a pump fake competition during half-time of the final. Rowsey vs. Sam.

The seeding in the Memphis regional was all messed up. The lower seed won all but 1 game (the 2 vs. 7 first round matchup). The 8th seeded Jackson, TN Underdogs won their 3 games by an average of 17.7 points. Should we be worried?

That's a weird team. They only have two professional basketball players. The rest are bartenders, truck drivers, and other locals who mostly played for two local rival high schools in Jackson.

I haven't watched this year's TBT yet because I was on vacation and doing other things, but I do expect to watch tomorrow night.
Obviously, I will be rooting for this team.
Still, I can't bring myself to call 'em "we." I have no qualms with those who do say "we," I'm just not feelin' it.

Would it ever become worth it to Wade to play? Like could he play a game or two and make $200,000 if they win it all? Even at his worth that’s a decent pay day for a couple games.

He no longer is on in the NBA contract so he doesn't really need to be paid his "worth" to play because of risking injury. I think it's more of a passion thing. If he wanted to play in an MU uniform again he would. But also the tournament would have to be much much bigger by then and have pretty large crowds.
This is all theoretical though and what I'd do in his shoes.

I’m saying would it be worth it for him to play this year? Like say they make the championship game. Don’t the players each get about $200,000? He could make $200,000 for playing a single game.

The guy has a sterling reputation. It is not worth 200k to risk that potentially playing bad in a pickup game that is nationally televised.
On the other hand , I think the math and circumstances works well for guys like Buycks, Jamil and Travis.

Jordan averaged 20ppg, 6rpg and 4.8apg his last year. I don't think anyone would fault wade for coming in with that stat line when he's meant to be retired.

Jordan's first year with the Wizards, he was a leading MVP candidate 50+ games into the season -- averaging 25-6-5 for a team that was surprisingly contending for the playoffs. Then he got hurt and never got back to form, and the Wizards fell out of the race.
The following year, he was a shell of his former self. He still played in all 82 games, had games of 45, 41, 43 and 39 points, and averaged 20-6-4.
But yes, there was a circus feel to much of his time playing for Wash, especially when he returned to Chicago.
As for D-Wade ever playing in the TBT ... I'd put likelihood somewhere in 0.01% range.

Fatpour has a really solid tv setup and is directly across from wintrust. I was there after MU v DePaul game and there were a lot of good late games on. Service was atrocious and I didn’t try the food though

Haha I was there that game too, was fun to watch. I've been there a few times now after events at the Wintrust or McCormick Place and it's the best place in the area to mingle with people after events. I feel bad for the service after the Marquette game as I don't think they were expecting so many people. Usually the service is much better than it was that night.

Feel like this can’t possibly be our best possible starting lineup
-
For example,
Derrick biffing layups I do not miss
-
Chapman has to go
-
Oooof everyone but Diener is looking rough. Rowsey is terrible right now
-
Can't tell with this camera angle, but did we just give up a wide open layup to do a backwards pass for a three
-
Oooof everyone but Diener is looking rough. Rowsey is terrible right now
How can you tell with this angle?
-
Cams are back, but now we've lost the announcers. Score?
-
6:39 left in 2Q up 1
-
Derrick still doesn't like to shoot I see.

thought mcneal was playing

Derrick has great defense

Jamil SOTG

Any thoughts on Chapman's timeout talks to the team? I hope he dumbed them down for the tv cameras; "play hard, win the next 5 minutes, etc.".

-
While Travis still has plenty of gas in the tank, his future is in coaching. Last night he absolutely took charge in the first half getting the team out of their initial doldrums, with Rowsey especially. It was just clear that all the players to a man respected his wisdom and leadership, including our superstars Dwight and Jamil.
-
It was an interesting game to watch. It's not college, not pro, and more organized than playground though with a lot of that physicality. Jamil playing a big role for the team. Travis surprisingly effective for his age. Rowsey cold as ice but appears to be getting ignored at times. He still can't play defense. Derrick Wilson's defense still solid as can be.Those referee shirts with the big REF on the back are amusing.
Not sure why they would schedule the next games on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Chicago. That's going to hurt attendance.

They're 15 bucks + tax and fees on ticketmaster. You're 5 rows from the court and if you want to move up no one is going to check your tickets. just buy online.

Talked to Dakich for 10m he is a complete jag.

I was at the game last night sitting courtside for quarters 2,3 4(lucky me).
It was an absolute blast. It was a little unorganized in the first couple quarters but MU was able to get it going in 4Q. The refs basically let these guys beat the living crap out of each other, so it's like playground ball. You can tell these guys, on both teams, really want to win. You can hear everything these guys are saying the court as well - which is fun. Diener came down the court right before Jamil's game-winner and looked at my group and said "ball game".
It was my first time going and I highly suggest any MU fans in town on Sunday make the trek (tickets are cheap and well worh the price, $25 all in). "WE ARE MARQUETTE" was loud and proud last night. Players are very receptive to talking to fans post-game too. Dapped up Derrick and let Blackledge know that one-handed slam was siiiiick. I truly think these guys appreciate all the MU fans at the game.
-
Can anyone explain the player rotations?
Why is McNeal on the bench and not playing?
Why did Jake Thomas not play last night, after playing a lot in Wichita?
Same in reverse for Deiner (not playing in Wichita and playing last night)?
-
Could the we are Marquette chants be heard on tv?
-
Enjoyed the game.
Jamil was a man among boys. If he had played like that in 2013-14, we might have survived having the worst backcourt in modern MU history.
Could the we are Marquette chants be heard on tv?
Yes.

I am pretty sure they did not have access to a reliable weather forecast at the time the games were scheduled. It could have just as easily been 95 degrees with 90% humidity, and then it would have been a brilliant move.

McNeal didn't play because he either didn't want to or wasn't eligible for some reason.
Jake didn't play because it was a close game and Diener is like 400000000 times better
Diener wasn't on the roster as a player last week. To busy drinking beer

McNeal was hurt....might still not be 100%...or maybe he is just rusty
Thomas was needed in Wichita to provide depth.....now we have Travis.....
Travis wasn't with the team in Wichita ....3 games in 3 days was too much for him at his age he said.
Everybody doesn't get to play.......this isn't CYO ball.....2 million on the line.

That guy deduced from the GE server I was on that I was the third shift dude sitting a panel at a utility in the northeast. It was beyond his comprehension that some MU alums could be expats in other time zones.
Uncle John was the mouth-breathing prototype for the non-meat eating booger-eaters who dominate the narrative on both the Dodds site and Scoop.

As to the rotation question, Chapman has it figured out perfectly. Our starting lineup has tons of offense so adding Derrick who is a great rebounder for his size plus a lock down defender at this level is absolutely the correct move. Rowsey was 'off' last night but was instant offense for the second unit in Kansas. It's important that MU continue to successfully spread the floor as it opens driving lanes for Dwight. We've got enough shooters to do that.
One more thing. Guys with legit NBA chops understand the game and the physicality at this level. On our team, that's Jamil, Dwight and Travis. This is the first year that all 3 have played together. Our chances of winning this whole thing have improved significantly as a result. And lastly, those of you that chose to complain about our non-MU guys can eat it. Cook and Charlo in particular have been outstanding. No eligible MU big could have provided what they have. I watched Davante try 2 years ago in Peoria.

No........and they wouldn't if he was.
Why not? Is there something more there? I saw him fraternizing with the bench at halftime last night, all seemed normal/non-awkward to me
-
Let's just say he he didn't hold up his end last season and management wasn't happy.......
I think he wrote a letter to Chapman......something about Buycks and Jamil shooting too much......it got awkward when Derrick, Trend and Jerel wouldn't sign it...

No DJO isn't a "traitor" he just wasn't asked back after not showing up last year.

Still appreciate what DJO did as a Warrior -- he really was a warrior. But I'm not sorry his team lost in the TBT, because he's not playing for this particular band of Warriors.

Some of Chapman's lineup usage irks me tbh.
As for Derrick -- he's not a great rebounder for any size, but he is playing physical basketball which is needed in this tourney.

By far the most consistent high scorer for Team Hines has been 6’0 guard Mike James out of Lamar. He has been lighting it up every game. Seems like an opportunity for Derrick.

Ok... which one of you has been messing with Travis' Wikipedia page? I went to see if he and Craft play in the same Italian league (looks like they do) and saw this:
He rejoined the Marquette Alumni team for the "Championship Weekend" of the 2019 tournament—hitting two consecutive three pointers to win in the semi-finals vs Team Heines while drunk on 6 cans of Miller Lite.

I don’t get why people feel the need to make their uninformed opinions known to all...like I don’t know anything about this but here’s what I think.

Love how Diener moves the ball when he came in getting everyone involved. Then when it mattered most he had clean open looks and pulled trigger.
Great interview with Chapman after the game.
-
That was awesome, though I scared my daughter when I screamed "YES" as Travis drilled the deep three to win it. Fantastic game start to finish. Before the Elam Ending, I don't think either team led by more than 4 at any point. Team Hines was really tough and was aided by the refs letting almost everything go (except some really odd ticky-tack calls).
Cook was SOTG, but kudos to Derrick Wilson for playing great defense every time he was out there on Mike James. Whenever Derrick left the court, James had a lot more freedom to move and get to the rim. Derrick really locked him up effectively. Great game for him, and hit his free throws.

Also in line for $5,000, in 7th place right now. I had Overseas Elite & Marquette in the Final with Marquette winning. I think I'm locked into the $5,000 tier if we win Tuesday, as long as everyone in 8/9/10 have their #TBTFAN points already.
Was disappointed OE lost as that would've been a nice separator, but even if I drop down I can't complain if they win. Any prize share (which all 900 registered Golden Eagles fans would get) is better than nothing.
Though I'm wondering, do we have to download the Zelle app beforehand?

Dwight has been the best player on the team. Not today though.
Yep. This is why a team is a team instead of just one guy.
Buycks was bad today, but they lose in Wichita if he wasn't one of the very best players in the entire field.
This group did a nice job of putting together this team. Lots of guys can make a difference.
Rowsey sucked today, too, and Jamil went ice cold. But Acker had a great stretch, Cook played a fine all-around game, Derrick played some nice D, etc.
Diener hadn't scored a single point before he hit those two cold-blooded effen daggers.
Buycks might be spectacular again for this group on Tuesday. Or maybe somebody else will step up.

I didn’t win a dime when we won in ‘77. ;)

I think it's kind of BS that you can pick your team until August 1, or that teams eliminated after that can't switch their allegiance. So if you were cheering for Kohl Blooded and they got eliminated day one, you can switch to Carmen's Crew, but if you are cheering for Overseas Elite you can't because your team was better? It punishes fans of teams that advance to the last 8 but don't make the final. Had Marquette's team lost today, I wouldn't have watched on Tuesday, but if we lost and I could've switched my team, I probably still would.

I noticed the person leading MU fans is also leading the Overseas Elite fans. Not a bad play setting up an account with all contenders and guaranteeing money.

Have to imagine this is the best possible final for TBT. Both of the teams in the final have built in fanbases, unlike Overseas Elite and Team Hines. Also both Midwest teams, so should help attendance in Chicago.

Honestly, it's so very much fun watching Diener play/coach/motivate. Sure he hit the big shot yet again. But I'll focus my comments on his work with Rowsey in Thursday's game. See Rowsey got frustrated by his inability to hit a shot and by the very physical play that was being allowed. He was about to react in a less than constructive manner during a stoppage and Travis gave him one hell of a shove in the other direction. Chapman recognized immediately that Andrew was on tilt and subbed him out. Moments later Diener also came out and cleared out space on the bench next to Rowsey, put his arm around him and talked to him at length. And for the rest of the game both were the first to high five all other player contributions.
Diener's playing career will be ending soon. I sure home he wants back on the MU bench. Dude is simply a winner.

The thing I love the most about Diener, is he pushes the ball up the court so fast and keeps everyone fed and involved. The classic definition of a point guard. So when the clutch moments come, it is so natural for the rest of the team to want him with the ball.
The other night when the broadcast only had the high camera angle for a while, it was very easy to see how different Diener operates from the rest of the players on the court.

Defense was huge yesterday. Look at their box score:
https://www.thetournament.com/news/1-golden-eagles-68-1-team-hines-62
Lojeski was 1/4 from three. Mike James just 3/12 from the field (1/6 on threes). Team Hines shot just 25% beyond the arc and 45.5 eFG%. Guys like Derrick & Acker playing really tight, pesky defense on James was a huge part of that.

The first thing you notice is that Travis is significantly bigger, taller, longer than Andrew. The 2nd thing you notice is that Travis reads the defense better/sees the floor and is a better passer. Andrew still likes to go one in one and shoot the three or even try the pump fake foul. Both are fine. But he is still in the process of adding to his game. I saw several small things in Travis’ game that he has picked up over the years. Smart player. And Travis fully understands and expects the physicality.

Diener's playing career will be ending soon. I sure home he wants back on the MU bench. Dude is simply a winner.
Does he? I don't know either way, but I wonder if he didn't really enjoy the coaching experience as much as he thought.

It will be interesting to see this matchup. For those that complain about the non-MU players, I think we can attribute that to the Ohio State team. They pounded us inside one year and led to the team looking for more size outside of the MU alumni base. Crean’s lack of big men recruiting continues to screw us.

Though, Ousmane Barro would look nice on this team. He apparently has had contractual commitments?

This cracked me up, I admit.

DW had 1 rebound.
You are correct. My mistake hearing something on twitter.
-
The first thing you notice is that Travis is significantly bigger, taller, longer than Andrew.
Travis is 10x the ballplayer Rowsey will ever be, only diminished by age. I wasn't trying to make a comparison.

I think that the tickets might be more difficult than the past sessons given the two teams. Talked with someone from TBT after the game and they are really excited that this is the matchup given the locally-established fan bases. Sounded like the $25 tix were going fast.
-
I can't attend tomorrow night, but because I have 600 points, TBT sent out a code for 50% off tickets tomorrow. If there are still tickets available, go to the link below and use the code TBTFAN50 to get 50% off tickets:

2 things:
1 funny that Crean seems to be reveling in this TBT and, as only he can, essentially taking credit for it. Yet how many guys on this team over 6’2” did he even recruit? Any size on the Squad Buzz brought in or the guys had to go get.
2. The year MU lost to OSU we did nit have Charlo or Cook, most importantly OSU that year had Sullinger and he was a one man wrecking crew against our small lineup.
Different story now, outcome tbd

Defense was huge yesterday. Look at their box score:

Did not see attendance listed in the box score. Curious if the semi final and final have higher attendance than a non conference DePaul game.

I believe I heard that he does not love the recruiting responsibilities involved with college coaching. He could still love the coaching part of coaching.

Hard to blame him for that.
After he went to the NBA, KO said he preferred the pros because it meant "I don't have to lie to 18-year-olds' mothers any more." Of course, he eventually went back to college hoops when the NBA seemingly didn't want him any more.

Literally posed that question during the Elite 8 game. What are the odds that MU's TBT team outdraws DePaul in at least one game this year? Put another way, if DePaul's lowest attended game has a gate of X, then will MU's TBT crowd be larger than X?
I say yes, 100%. The MU's gonna pack 'em in tonight.

Yep. I bet every single game DePaul plays at home outdraws tonight's game.

fair, my bad... but in my defense it did lead to some nice follow on shade tossed at Depaul's attendance, so good job team.

Coach Joe Chapman just interviewed on Chicago ABC sports promoting TBT
Also, first season at Wintrust DePaul had eight games with fewer than 2,000 in attendance, including 3 with less than 1,000. (According to Illinois tax watchdog website)
Last year, according to DePaul athletics, lowest attendance was 3,674.
I think MU can do this.

I am sure it has been stated many times in here, but I have not been able to watch any of the games very closely.
Why isn’t Jerel playing a more prominent role? Is he hurt?

I doubt that's accurate given that the total of everyone's share per this article ends up being more than $2 million.

Yep. Usually that’s Eddie Moysh territory, but this is just fun for fans. For the guys on the court, however, splitting $2 million is a big deal.
What ticks me off is....
While I appreciate Scoop and all, it seems a gross injustice that OSU, of all places, has a website named “Eleven Warriors.”
-

They don't split $2 million. Some of US get a share. It's literally not just for fun.

Yea, Rel has been real bad.

Ended the game they started it unfortunately.
Fun run tho
-
Ah well, went cold at the wrong time. Just really wish it wasn’t against the OSU alumni.
Next year though.
-
Entertaining game.
-
Jerel hasn't played with this team at all...and there he is in crunch time!?! I don't get it.
But it was fun to watch until the Elam ending.
-
Just a game. Proud of the guys. But dear lord, get Jerel off the court. Don’t blame Mo for just walking off the court.
-
Outstanding basketball game! Heartbreakering loss.
-
I can't fathom why Jerel was in the game instead of Acker. He hadn't done anything all tournament.
Awful finish after an overall pretty good showing.
-
Terrible foul by cook zero chance of getting that rebound.
Agree on MCneal old and slow, did he score a basket in the entire tournament why is he in there?
Jerel doing what he always did, turn the ball over. Most maddening player in MU history. The more things change the more they stay the same. Was saying during the TO, “why is he in there?”
-
Acker wasn’t anywhere near this good when he was in college, right?
tougher than nails.
-
Great tourney run, tough Elam Ending. Tired legs.
-
Elam ending is fun. Elam ending be able to end the game on FTs is kind of lame.
Got a bit cold at the end, but Jamil is an NBA player. He’s huge on both ends of the floor. If that BS civil suit doesn’t come up, I think he’s on a true NBA deal. Hope he gets another chance
-
Jerel should not have been out there!! Damn!!
-
So, so close. Just couldn't quite finish the deal. Really enjoyed watching the team throughout the tournament. It's become one of the best parts of the offseason. And they represented Marquette well.
-
Love McNeal. He did not look like he should've been out there at all. I was at game and we had a fast break and he didnt even pass half court. He just stopped and let team play 4 on 5 (we turned it over).
Sad way to lose. Would've loved to have those 2 minutes back. As always, win or lose, love to watch Marquette basketball. Nice job, fellas. Way to represent.
-
Great run by the warriors...
Needed to go inside more as they were switching the 3
On defense, rebounding killed them.
Obviously sloppy ball handling and passing at the end
Jerel will have a tough time sleeping tonight.
-
For as good as diener looks at 37, McNeal is the exact opposite.
-
I've always hated the Elam ending. If it's a tight game the refs do everything they can to not blow their whistles to give a team an easy shot at getting 25% of their points needed and it turns into a hack fest and terrible basketball, and if it's a blowout it's hoist up 3 pointers on both sides of the court and turns into a brick fest and horrible basketball.
-
Didn't McNeal miss some earlier TBT games because he was hurt? He sure looked a step (or two) slow today, and those two giveaways were brutal. I'm actually hoping he was still hurting a little, because that's at least a viable excuse.
When they came out of the timeout before the start of the Elam ending, I turned to Mrs. 82 and said, "I can't believe Acker's not out there instead of McNeal." I'm glad to see several Scoopers said they thought the same thing.
Still, despite it all, MU had good open looks for Diener, Jamil and Buycks down the stretch. Still had a chance. It was a good run, and I enjoyed the 3 games I watched.
-

Elam ending has flaws. Anti climatic that a game as physical as that ends on a foul 90 feet from the basket. It can be pretty exciting but I’d never want to see the college game go to the Elam ending or 4 quarters.
-
I like the Elam ending for this kind of tournament. Makes it different, and it has resulted in many exciting endings without a dozen fouls and 6 time-outs turning the final 3 minutes into 35-minute slogs. But, like AirPunch (and obviously wades), I would never want to see it in D1 basketball.
4 quarters? I'd be open-minded about it. I do like that team fouls reset after each quarter. Not clamoring for it, but I wouldn't reject it out of hand. Works quite well for women's game and high school, so I don't see why it absolutely wouldn't work for men's D1.

I think the game flows so much better with quarters. Unfortunately they'll screw up that flow by shoehorning that final TV timeout into the second and fourth quarters.

What happened to the fake Tom Crean twitter account? That was gold.

I love the Elam ending. The finish was no more anticlimactic than watching a team dribble out the clock or shoot endless free throws. The team that executed at the end won.
I don’t love playing a guy at the end who has done nothing to help the team get where they are. Acker kept them in the game with his threes, then he rode the pine while his replacement handed the game away. JC was excellent all tourney, but that coaching mistake was co$tly.

As good a job as Chapman did the entire tourney, he blew that game. Awful roster management. Rel hadn’t earned many minutes at all much less the crucial minutes with 2mil on the line. I feel really bad for the guys that got them there only to have it blown by a guy who didn’t contribute. I love Jerel but that was inexcusably bad by him and JC

I really do not like the Elam. I hope that other concepts develop as to how to eliminate some of the problems at game end. Here's one idea (that surely will quickly be picked apart by Scoopers) :
at the 3 minute mark (or wherevever you want to I.D. as the time frame) a buzzer goes off alerting the teams that the following is now in effect: both teams in double bonus and up to 3 shots are allowed to get the 2 free throws (or 4 to get 3) . The shot clock goes to 20 seconds on possesions after the first stoppage of play following the 3 minute buzzer.

How loud is the buzzer when the moon phase is a waning gibbous? And how much time is added to the shot clock when the visiting team has three players with the same middle initial (but different first names)?
The Elam Ending is simple and easy to understand, and it requires no material change in the rules of the game... it only modifies one thing: how the game ends. Buckets still count the same, fouls still register the same, number of players on the court stays the same, etc.
There are three ways you can end a game without changing the rules of the game: current clock rules, running clock (ala soccer) and Elam. There are also three end-of game situations at the under-4 stoppage: large lead, tie game (1 possession game), close game (within 3-4 possessions). Looking at each.
Large Lead: Rarely does a team who is down by double digits with under four to play have a chance to win the game under current rules, so with a running clock, it would be virtually impossible. Either way, you're not looking at the possibility of an extended game (OT or intentional FT's). With Elam, the trailing team at least has a chance to come back simply by shutting down the other team... no risk of having the clock run out. So Elam could potentially extend the game a bit longer than current or running clock, but like the NCAA Tournment itself, it doesn't matter how well you performed the first 90% of the game, everyone controls their own destiny to the very end.
Tight Game: Very exciting, back-and-forth contests. Great for watching and TV. But potential for OT extends length-of-game significantly, regardless of current or running clock. Elam can maintain the excitement without increasing length-of-game.
Close Game: Intentional FT's usually means one of two things... you're going to extend the game into OT, or you're going to extend the game in an exercise of futility. Running clock actually provides a meaningful length-of-game benefit in these situations, but it also means that a 3 possession game with 2 to play would be virtually insurmountable without reducing the shot clock duration. Elam is the best of both worlds... both teams play the game until the very end without material increase to length-of-game.
That said, I don't think we'll see Elam Ending in NCAA anytime soon, but if I'm a content producer, capping the length-of-game and/or keeping games competitive to the very last bucket might be music to my ears.
-
for $2 million, play it out the right way-might as well make it take it

I personally think the bashing of Rel is somewhat uncalled for. Did he struggle in Elam last night? Hell ya. But let's remember the critical minutes he played on Sunday to get them to the Final.
Rel forced a turnover right at the beginning of Elam in that game if my memory serves in what were his first minutes on the floor. I think Chapman's thought process was the D he brought to the table plus some rebounding was more than Mo could offer in a 3-5 possession stint. Remember that Travis, Dwight, Jamil AND Cook were all going to be on the floor, guaranteed. Chapman simply did not anticipate that Rel was going to have turnover problems. Perhaps the 'rust' associated with his injury should have been a factor. Water over the dam at this point.
I'm sure Rel is taking this personally today. Let's be a little charitable.

Too many coaches forget you need to score and control the ball at the end of games. Yes defense is great but a smart player who can score and control the ball will not hurt you on defense at the end of games they will help you win more often than not.
-
That's on Chapman as much as McNeal at the end there. Why on earth he is playing him was beyond me. Could have played Acker, Charlo. Why was he bringing it up the court? So disappointing.
-
Too complicated. How about just 2 shots and the ball?
I think that makes both teams leery of any serious defensive effort but I could see 1 shot and the ball. It is somewhat complicated but the idea was to float an idea that not only made intentional fouling a very risky gamble for the trailing team to get possesion but also a way to prevent the leading team to shoot at the :27 or:28 second mark ala UVA or UW and burn the clock. It makes both teams head more in the direction of a shootout.

Franschilla argued that the final eight of the TBT are the strongest basketball teams in the world that do not play in the NBA.
He said they are a collection for foreign all-stars and low to mid-level former NBA players. So they are better than the best college teams and the best foreign teams.
Do you agree with this?

Mostly. They would beat the best college teams by double digits. But, there may be a European team or two that could beat them.

Maybe if they were coached adequately but I do feel that the best college teams would win if you took them both with the amount of practices each plays with before said season.

I dunno about that, just look how much Buycks, Jamil, Acker, and even Derrick have all improved since college.
Same with top-tier guys like Anthony Davis. Yea, he was awesome at Kentucky, but I think current Jamil Wilson could hang with Freshman year AD.

Fraschilla also made this point.
Every guy on the eight teams in the finals is a pro player. That means 365 basketball for more years than they were in college (save Rowsey). And with age comes wisdom.
He then said that the Golden Eagles Alumni team today, would be #1 and the favorite to win the national championship. Again TODAY. Not 8, 10 or 16 years ago (Charo and Diener are both 37) when they played in college.
He was trying to stress that this is the highest level of basketball you will see away from the NBA.

They would mollywop any college team. Euro teams would get some wins

Agree on all counts with Frashilla. Absolutely men versus boys in the areas of skill, IQ, physicality, and mentality.

Didn’t the MU squad scrimmage the alums last year and win? I think you guys are over reacting to what a talking head was saying during a broadcast..aka doing his job and trying to build hype

If they did it was because the alums were walking around.
A college team is not going to beat a team of seasoned pros who all also went to d1 colleges.
Players improve after college not regress.

I think it matters if you are referring to a November college team or a March college team. March teams are way better than they were in November. The biggest improvement is team defense. TBT teams have a lot of good offensive players. The teams that made Chicago were also pretty good on defense. However, they still were a collection of individual players vs. really well trained units. How many times did Buycks turn over the ball when he decided to do things on his own?

It doesn't matter. There is no college team at any point in the season who would best the last 8 of the tbt.

A truly laughable statement.
U do realize basically MUs starting Tbt lineup has spent time in the NBA correct?
Now please define anyother profession where an 18-21 year old with zero professional experience is better than a 30 yo in the same profession. Swoop plz stop making yourself look so silly

I don't think it was last year but one of the years, yes it did happen. IIRC, it was at one of the TBT's first practices and not all of the players were present.

I am in agreement with those who give any college basketball team little if any chance of beating a good TBT team.
If we had this Jamil Wilson, this Mo Acker, this Dwight Buycks, even this Derrick Wilson (not to mention this Elgin Cook), we would win the NCAA title.

Hell, we might have won several.

But Sand Kit says it’s laughable??? Oh wait, it happened

This Dwight Buycks could average 35-40 in the Big East. Aaron Craft was the B10 Defensive POY twice, National DPOY, and has won awards for his defense in Europe as he's presumably gotten even better. There were multiple times Buycks flat out shook him to get his shot. There isn't a player in college that could lock him down. He averaged 20+ in China and still averaged 22 in the TBT despite not playing well in Chicago.
Not to mention Wilson. People just don't realize the gap up in ability that occurs when you play basketball full time with no other distractions.

A scrimmage in training camp is not the same as a game.
The most talented team doesn't always win......especially in a short scrimmage when the better team just started practicing.
I have little doubt that the MU TBT team would beat the last 3 MU college squads in a meaningful game or series of games. .....but a scrimmage?......you are working on stuff........some older guys might be a little out of shape or whatever......it could happen.
