In USMNT news, Steve Cherundolo was named the U-23's coach...ugh.

Its crazy, cause a decade ago, I would have been thrilled with the idea that Dolo was coaching high level for the US.  At the time, very few had adapted/immersed themsevles as fully into European soccer and its structure and culture as much as he had in Hannover.  He immediately transitioned from long time captain to coaching at Hannover, both as a first team assistant and then academy head man.  Then moved to Stuttgart with a former teammate.  After that staff got canned, he assisted with the USMNT on a brief interim basis and then he started coaching with the German National Team.  Coincidentally, he was taking a parallel path to Matarazzo.

Then out of nowhere he takes a head job in the USL with Las Vegas, and after doing a frankly mediocre job for a season, he gets the cushiest of jobs with LAFC.  I don't want to completely make assumptions, but its pretty clear there was a conversation of "if you want to coach in the USMNT, you need to come back to the US and then we will take care of you" and here we are.  Another of the MLS/US Soccer guys.  If I had to guess, Poch is indeed moving on, we will get an MLS guy for a bit and then I will not at all be surprised to see Cherundolo take over the USMNT after the Olympics.  Doesn't matter that he won't be heading the team for a full cycle since its all being directed by the Federation anyways.

Would be VERY happy to be wrong.  But it seems like a likely outcome they can cover with the "disappointment" of this World Cup when they went outside the circle for Poch, can say "see we tried!" and now they will bring it back in.

Until, that is, soccer becomes a major sport.

But, I don't think that will happen in my lifetime.

Not if the male student population continues to decline. MU at 58% female is lower than many colleges these days.

Absolutely brutal time to lose a top 5 world keeper with 4 WCs worth of experience.  That was literally the first ball/shot that Lammens faced.

Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but stopping play because Pickford collided with a teammate is a ridiculous decision.
