Not that I care either way, but that's pretty common parlance in Dallas since he's been HC.  My BIL calls him that and he gets referred to as such by Dallas sports radio/Cowboys bloggers.  I would imagine it was probably something Herbstreit picked up during interviews/prep work around the organization this week.  Not like it's some dorky inside nickname due to a friendship they have.

It's dorky. Act like a professional, national announcer. The coach has a real name. Use it.

As for Bucs coach Todd Bowles - "Bowlsie?" - kick the effen FG and go up by 3 scores.

Sure it's his nickname. That's not what a national television announcer should use.

But I would expect that from a guy who uses a dog to shield his image.

It's Coach Mike Shuh-Shev-Skee, not Coach K.

Different. And you know it. But that's cool.

Why is it different? Honest question. And what's it matter?
I think Herbstreit - Ibdon't dare call him Herbie - is a bit of a clown, but this (to me) seems harmless.

Because "Coach K" is ubiquitous. It's like calling William Belichick "Bill."

"Schottie" makes you sound oddly friendly and familiar. I have never once heard it used to describe him prior to last evening.

Incredibly subjective.

Sure it's harmless. Doesn't hurt anybody or anything. But it's not the same as Coach K, and you know it.

Say "Coach K" to even the most casual sports fan, and he or she immediately knows who it is. It's the decades-long nickname for one of the most successful and best-known sports figures in history. It's like "Magic."

Now do the same for "Schottie." Most will have no clue, though some might think it's Marge Schott's dog.

Truly surprised you're making the argument, Pak.

But it's not a studio show or a vague article about the NFL as a whole. You're watching a Cowboys game, there is no confusion as to who "Schotty" is referring to.

Like I said earlier, you Google or search "Schotty" and hundreds of Cowboys related mentions and blog posts immediately. As a result, I would bet significantly that a large subset of the people in the Cowboys organization refer to him as such as well.  Which is where a color guy would pick it up as their job is convey that sort of stuff in an entertaining fashion.
I'm not surprised that people hadn't heard him referred to as such, outside of Dallas. He's been an NFL HC for 20 games and hasn't yet won 10.  Plenty of casual fans probably don't even know his first name if unprompted.

But again, it's just entertainment. I don't know why it sounds any less "professional".  It's far more annoying and dorky when the color guy feels the need to fawn over anything positive a bang average QB does or employs insane hyperbole about what a football savant a career .500 coach is cause he happens to be the home team on the broadcast.

It's an argument only inasmuch as I don't think it's something worth consternation, or even a second thought. I'm saying, why does it matter? If you find it distracting, OK, fair. But sports broadcasters have used nicknames when calling games forever, even for coaches (The Dean, Big Tuna, Riverboat Ron, JoePa, The Ol Ball Coach).

As for Coach K ... at some point, not even the most casual sports fan knew what that meant. He didn't come out of the womb as Coach K. Some broadcaster started calling him that not because it was a well-established shorthand, but because it was easier than pronouncing his full name. And it eventually caught on from there ... because it was easier for everyone else, too.
Will "Schottie" have a similar fate? I very much doubt it, for reasons not the least of which that Schottie very likely won't be a head coach for four more decades... and maybe not four more games.

No one wants to admit trading for him?

They could have gotten more if they waited until after he torched the Lions secondary for 15 receptions and 240 yards.
...I'm a rebel just for kicks,  now
I been feeling it since 1966, now...

Who will ever forget Coach K's rival at UNC - Dean Smith. Or as Herbstreit called him, "Smitty"!
