Quote from: willie warrior on May 01, 2026, 12:12:27 PMYes. According to some here, we are just a stud or 2 or 3 away from surpassing UCOnn. Enter Reeker with some snarky BS about the greatness of Dick Hurley but we are still right there with UConn.

Literally nobody on Scoop is saying what you claim "some" are saying about MU and UConn.

And your obsession with Unk is getting scary.

Quote from: Billy Hoyle on April 30, 2026, 03:03:52 PMThose were all powers in the 70s and 80s. Duke is a powerhouse during the internet and mass media era. They have ESPN backing them. They are too big to fail.

They really aren't. They just seem to have been fortunate with K's timing. If he leaves earlier, it's Collins or Wojo. Maybe Dawkins. But Scheyer was the right guy at the right time. Generally speaking K has a pretty poor tree so having him there at that moment was pretty fortuitous.

Maybe a scorching hot take, but I'm not so sure Collins or Wojo, in his position, are that far off from Scheyer's results.  There is no denying his recruiting chops, but his coaching has been far from unimpeachable.

Wojo's issue wasn't recruiting.  Could he have pulled the same sort of recruiting classes as Scheyer if he was in the big chair post-K, given the current prestige of Duke?  I don't think its absurd to say he would/could. Having top 5 rosters every year and only making 1 FF seems like its in Wojo's wheelhouse.

I don't even think I have to go on a limb to say Chris Collins is a better Xs and Os guy than Scheyer (at this point at least).  What he's done at NW is incredibly impressive.  It won't get him a marquee job, but he's won 3 NCAA games at a school that had never made an NCAA tourney prior to his hiring.  They finished better than 7th in the B10 only 1 time since Tex Winter coached there in the 70s and  Collins has done it 4 times.  I think he absolutely could have done as well with Scheyer's rosters, if not better.  Could he pull the 5 stars?  That's a reasonable debate.

Scheyer's position/current reputation is funny cause its not like he's a bad coach but I don't think he's been overly impressive either, aside from continuing the blistering pace of Duke recruiting.  I could confidently say there are at least a dozen coaches who make at least 2 FFs in 4 years (1 more than Scheyer) with his rosters.

Hubert Davis was not a good coach, but if he had top 2 classes every year the last 5 years, I don't think he gets fired cause he probably makes multiple E8s, as well, while getting upset in them like Scheyer.

Scorching? It's just a take, Wags. We all have them, they are just opinions, and none of them can be proven.

Most of us have. Rocky needs to put together a stern memo to administration on behalf of Scoop complaining about this. It might help us to land Otz as our next coach as a few here clamor for. Of course he ain't going anywhere unless a big time program opens up.

This wouldn't have happened had we hired Pitino when he was available.  Would have been the greatest coach in Marquette history

The season before this last one, Muggsy posted on a game thread "Perhaps a contingent of scoopers should be formed to address the team". You found your perfect partner to arrange this. Instead of addressing the team, it's time to dump Shaka. Get it done!

"Stern memo?" Rocky isn't going to do squat to help you and Muggsy out. He's too busy counting all the money he makes off of scoop whether Marquette does well or not.

Jop was a top 100 player from Wisconsin. NM is a top transfer from the Milwaukee area.

It's not like Wisconsin is getting these players either. Some kids just want to leave the state.

Most just play for AAU teams that require them to go to Iowa State, apparently.

I don't blame them. Why would a kid want to remain in a state where people wear huge Styrofoam wedges of cheese on their heads?

Seriously though....staying in your home state/city seems to be far less important to college-bound bball players today. I'm not sure that statistically there is much evidence that it ever was a major factor. Add in a coach knowing that his player has an entourage of friend and family telling him that he is not getting the PT he deserves all the time.

I agree about Rockys cash cow on this site. The fees we are being charged just to air our opinio are outrageous. The government should be investigating this fraudulent scam.

Yup. As one who chose to leave his comfort zone and attend a college nearly 1,000 miles from home, I totally get wanting to try something new.

Of course I want Wisconsin's best players to choose Marquette. I also want Chicago's and New York's and Timbuktu's best players to choose Marquette.

Scoopers don't seem to mind when Marquette entices athletes from Arizona, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania and so on and so on. Why didn't Maurice Lucas and Tyler Kolek play close to where they lived? What was wrong with them? Shame on the coaches at Pitt and Providence for "losing" those players to Marquette!

The home state school is much more attractive if it's a blue blood. That's what MU should work on.  8-)

Agree totally as I too chose to attend school a 1000 miles from home. As an only child I wanted to experience more independence and self reliance. Doing my own laundry was an education in and of itself. The main benefit was I got most of my studying done on weekends as I just could not go home and hang out with friends.

The problem with local kids is, they're often exposed to Marquette fans and I can see why they'd leave

I met a family friend of Stevie's at the tourney a few years ago and she said Nova went hard after Stevie both when he signed and when Wojo was fired but he wanted to leave the area and loved what MU offered.

Some people, you and I included, want to go away for college and see a better opportunity elsewhere, whether it's to play sports or just be a regular student.

But he went to Brookfield Central and grew up in Milwaukee.

Can't believe D1 let a kid commit to a Nike program, and then play for a Jordan Brand program.
