Are you not aware that inviting state HS coaches to practices to The AL costs nothing? Have an admin send out invites. There's no trapsing around involved. Don't care about out-state high schools? Invite coaches that are within 50 miles of campus. I mean, MU basketball is coming off a 20L season!!  Why limit things? Have vision. It's not like Shaka is demonstrating himself a master recruiter. Again, sales 101. This is a low cost (lunch, qtr zip MU pullover)/no cost outreach.

HS coaches no matta

Yes. Shaka should spend time hanging with the Viroqua coach. Great use of his time.

Mayyybeee you do this with the top prep school coaches that are close, WI state coaches, utter waste of resources. They already know they can come see a practice.

College bball recruiting has moved beyond a meet-and-greet with metro and state HS coaches if it ever was there. Low cost/no cost is about all it is worth. The worst part about the quarter zip pullover is that it will be an RGV one, and the visiting coach will feel obliged to actually wear the silly ass thing.

I'm not talking the state of WI. I'm responding to your idea of specifically targeting coaches in "Superior, Gleason, Viroqua or wherever." Coaches from places like that are not driving 5 hours to get a free quarter zip.

And yes events like that cost time, energy, and resources.  Every minute you spend courting the coach of Spooner High is a minute you could have spent working a program that will actually develop of D1 prospect in the next decade.

You keep referring to this as sales 101. Recruitment isn't sales.  It's procurement. You don't waste time building relationships with vendors who haven't developed a quality product in 50 years just so you might get a negligible advantage if they luck into a quality product sometime in the future.

I'll say it one more time. Sales. It's a HUGE part of the recruiting game. Btw, tell me you've never been in a sales job without telling me. Its amazing how folks misinterpret. It's all about relationships, and vision. Procurement? Those recruiting misses...No worries. Players just need more time, right?  It was only a 20L season, after all.

I thought only WI was local? 50miles gets you to about Lake Forest, IL. Why would you waste resources on people who aren't locals like that? Better just do it to those locals 5hrs away in superior

LOL...what?

He is 100% right. You don't spend time and money with low potential high school coaches in case a prospect happens to develop in their rinky dink hometown. I mean, would you spend time and money marketing high end cars to poor people just in case they get rich?

Exactly.  But I guess Shaka had a bad year last year so he should be reaching out to high school coaches in Wisconsin even though nearly all talent gets directed by their AAU programs.

I want to sell tires so I'm going to make sure to keep my relationship with the faucet companies in case they decide to sell tires

He's working on Shaka's seating chart for the luncheon. The only problem is that Joe Blow, the 32 year old head coach for Viroqua High, has never been to Milwaukee and he's a little scared. They don't know if he'll show. Especially since his Marquette-educated dentist has been feeding him crime statistics.

But Viper knows that a Marquette quarter-zip will go a long way!

I hope Viper realizes he can't seat the coach of Viroqua at the same table as the guy from Arcadia. Those Coulee Conference rivalries don't end when the season is over.

I seem to recall that MU coaches used to provide a Coaching Conference for HS coaches. Crean for sure, I believe Majerus and Buzz did as well. I don't think it was limited to Wisconsin HS coaches. Does Shaka do anything similar?

Seems like this would be a way to address the idea that a coach can promote MU to all coaches in the state/region simultaneously, build relationships over time, expose MU and it's facilities, and not waste a lot of one-on-one time with the coach from Viroqua.

Why not a combination? Invite 'em all to The Al, and have a big table stacked with $100 bills to give away as parting gifts.

Marquette does host Zoom conferences with some bigger names (if I remember Belein was one) that are free for anyone.
