The 24th anniversary.  In my mind, it is forever linked with the OKC bombing. An example of man's inhumanity toward man.  Another reminder, as if we needed one today, that some believe that violence and death are the answers.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

Skatastrophy

I wished my wife a happy 9/11 this morning.

I have such horrible memories of that day it's still hard to wrap my head around watching all of those people take a header out of the towers while they were on fire. One after another. I get why they did it, but it's horrible.

I sometimes wonder if it would benefit society if it were required to watch videos of the atrocities occurring as they happen. Seeing the humanity and the horror of it all could ground people, maybe? Idk.

20 years ago I might have agreed with you, but there is so much horrific and emotionally scarring video online these days that I don't know if it matters.  I feel like online media has become like online spending, a level of detachment from the tangible.  I watch a few of the videos every few years for some reason or another and am struck by just how chilling and soul snatching they still are.  The video of second plane swooping into view from overhead and hitting the second tower still shivers my spine in a way I can't think of many things can, despite nearly 25 years passing and countless viewings.

My biggest takeaway from the last few years around 9/11 is being completely and utterly thankful social media wasn't present at the time.  Related to the above, as a junior in HS, I remember kids being fascinated with the destruction and borderline wishing for the second tower to fall cause it was the next phase of shock and excitement in the day.  They had no real understanding or advanced cognitive processing of the absolute death and tragedy going on, but on the screen it was horrifyingly engaging.

If it happened today, there would be unhinged bloodlust for revenge, Gen Z idiots cheering that we got what we deserve, disgusting jokes across the board, and some of the worst snap takes and opinionated monologues you've ever seen.

As we get further away, you'd hope that some of the historical context and gravity can take hold with those who weren't alive or old enough to appreciate it, maybe through the videos you speak of, but we have scores of people who have begun to cheapen, mock, and attempt to edit/discredit/erase the magnitude and absolute evil of the Holocaust, so I don't really know.

No doubt, some Scoopers think 9/11 was great. Disgusting, vile people.

That aside, I'm currently on a business trip with a guy who served two tours in Afghanistan and he's been very candid about his experiences there and the societal mood impacts it's had on his military community and fellow soldiers.

It was valuable to me personally to hear first hand accounts of his experiences as a result of this day. Lasting effects for his lifetime and many many others.

For better worse seems every of year fewer and fewer people mention 9/11. Obviously Kirk dying overshadows it this year but still eventually people just move on.

He has a history of hyperbole.
