Does it too work off an algorithm designed to fuel extremism and polarization?

It's a platform full of reposting of content for likes and groupthink. But monetized misinformation not nearly as much

Yea, Facebook has a broader range, but I feel like Reddit is jet fuel for driving the mentally ill groupthink and distorted reality even further.  Its 4Chan's cleaner, prettier, and more "acceptable" derivative.  And its also self-moderated, which is even worse for crafting cavernous echo chambers and making people completely and utterly lose grasp on reality outside of their bubble.

Yeah, every once in a while you come across a subreddit that's completely off the rails.

I saw excerpts from a Trans subreddit yesterday that was treating the shooting like a 10/7 style event and instead of insane people cheering Hamas as heroic liberators, it was cheering Westman as a badass martyr for the Trans cause and boasting how more religious children can and should die if they and their families don't fall in line.  It was an absolute freakshow.

Yeah there's extremists in any community. Can't be surprised that they find each other on the Internet. Look at all the people that are into feet that found each other.

I find this hard to believe. Would like to see a link.

I don't doubt that there's plenty of crazy on Reddit. But my impression has been - and correct me if I'm wrong - that you have to go looking for and choose to engage with the crazy. That seems different from Facebook, where the crazy finds you.

I find Reddit comes up in Google searches when I'm trying to fix something or decipher a problem.  Someone always seems to have asked a question already and there's already a Reddit thread on it.

From the family of 10-year-old shooting victim Harper Moyski:

"While our immediate focus is on Harper and our family's healing, we also believe it is important that her memory fuels action. No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain. We urge our leaders and communities to take meaningful steps to address gun violence and the mental health crisis in this country. Change is possible, and it is necessary—so that Harper's story does not become yet another in a long line of tragedies."

It's heartbreaking that her family suffered this pain. It's also sad that their hope of this tragedy bringing about  changes in gun-safety laws will go unfulfilled.

Suggestions of common-sense legislation backed by 80%+ of Americans - including a majority of those who strongly support Second Amendment rights - get laughed at by the corrupt congresspeople who have been bribed by the NRA.

But at least they'll keep offering thoughts and prayers, as well as fairy tales about dead kids ending up with Jesus.

I've said it here before. People are liars and hustlers. I guarantee that 80% of people do NOT support any kind of gun control. They will say they do so they can feel like decent people - that's all.

They have PROVEN election after election that their "belief" is simply a lie.

Powers-that-be naturally say now isn't the right time to talk about gun-safety legislation. But they are talking a big game about mental health ... even as they defund mental-health programs.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

You forgot trans people.

Statistics by new administration officials prove that trans people commit 49.5% of crimes in the United States, matching the percentage of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.

I like to think even God would roll His eyes wen someone says their quick prayer and do nothing about it.

Correct.  Anyone that wants real change get caught in the thoughts and prayers argument because it's a distraction argument.  While the people offering thoughts and prayers that are elected officials should be mocked relentlessly for doing nothing and betraying their constituents, don't let up at what it's important. What is important?  Tackling the issue at hand, gun violence and mental health.

Any discussion other than guns is just a distraction.

Start with the variable that causes the most death and destruction.

Then move on to the other variables that the rest of the modern world is also working on.

tower912

I happen to think that mental health is equally important as guns.  Possibly more so.  So let's end the stigma of mental health issues, require mental health coverage in even the most basic insurance plans, make sure that everyone has prescription access to the drugs that can be the final barrier between functional and non, and build enough facilities to handle the struggling.   Seems the logical thing if we are going to continue to worship guns.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

Mental health is important. I didn't mean to imply it wasn't important to our society.

But in regards to stopping school/mass shootings and the resulting deaths, guns first.
