As you continue to dry up community and recreational opportunities along with continuing downward trending economic disparity, this is just gonna keep exponentially spreading. Social/economic Isolation is a big f***ing problem in the current young generation.

My son is still a few years away from me even having to worry about social media, the internet, etc... But I'm already preparing for incessant and repeated lessons/chats about how its not real life.  We talk about it plenty here, and sometimes are probably guilty of it a bit tribally on some points in various threads, but the opportunity for isolation combined with false community online is just a powderkeg doused in rocket fuel.  And you don't even have to be an extreme incel antisocial loser to fall victim.  A kid has a bad month at school (which happens all the time to perfectly normal kids), they retreat to some corner of the internet, harmlessly at first, and then its touch and go. 

Suddenly you think that the insanely combative tribal all or nothing nature of internet groups and trends is real life.  Leftist, alt-right, anti-woke, everyone I disagree with is a facist, "I wont talk/date/befriend anyone who isn't outspoken on (insert issue of the season)"...Its very easy to think thats super common cause algorithms LOVE pumping that type of divisive sentiment.  When it reality a minute fraction of people in your normal life act as such.

I don't have an answer on how to fix it, all I can speak to is how to try and curb it in your own sphere of influence, but its an issue that spans demographic, economic, and racial groups, that's for sure.

Great post Jwags. People of all ages can latch onto any ism and feel secure and completely confident that they have found the TRUTH, but young people seem especially vulnerable. I'm not sure how/if mental illness comes into play here. One could argue the old "chicken or the egg" cliche'. Tribalism has been around for thousands of years, but social media supercharges it.

Yeah, I think there's more than one issue that needs to be solved. Unfortunately we seem to not be addressing or cutting the resources of helping solve those issues.

I think we definitely need to help support mental health. Although, it sure would be easier to stop people with weapons that aren't guns. Either way, something more needs to be done than just praying about it each time one of these comes up.

Reddit's ad blitz to drive revenue wasn't as prominent until a little pre Covid. fairly recently. Facebook has been named as a key enabler of ethnic cleansing. I'll respectfully disagree
