That is truly hideous. Looks nothing like Wade. Somewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo feels vindicated.

I'm assuming this is a joke or something cause that is grotesque and couldn't look less like wade.

I guess it's real what a disgrace

It was mentioned in the NBA thread.  This is a complete abomination Brew.

For the love of god, don't they even ask the "artist" for a sample of their work before hiring them?  And don't they actually look at it before even scheduling the unveiling?

Yep.  I see no resemblance to Wade.  I wonder if the team or Wade will have this rectified.

The Sultan

Unless either of them are upset, it will likely stay the way it is.

I recognize the jersey. Maybe they should just cut off the head.

A six year old should be pissed about this.

That's embarrassing. What's worse, is they had to see that before the unveiling and still thought, yeah, let's go with this.

Billy Hoyle

from an article about the sculptors:

The statue was made by Rotblatt Amrany Studio sculptors Omri Amrany and Oscar León, according to the Miami Herald. Among their works is the Kobe Rapist Bryant "Black Mamba" statue, along with the "Kobe and Gianna Bryant Memorial Statue."

"Wade was very involved with what the statue would look like and visited the sculptor several times," Nichols said of the design process on X. "The Kobe statue was also being made at the same place, so Dwyane said it really hit him as he looked at both, that it was more than metal in front of him, it was immortality."

"He walked away very happy. By that last visit, he had basically seen everything he wanted to see. We made all the adjustments he wanted," León confirmed about the sculpture, per 7 News Miami.

I don't think art needs to be a perfect representative of the person being honored.

I suspect you're just being the devil's advocate here - and that's OK. I'll agree that the representation needn't be perfect. But I don't think this was meant to be a Picasso "guess who this is supposed to represent" piece of art. Without the Miami #3 jersey nobody (including DWade) would guess who it is. That's certainly not rule of thumb for a piece of art meant to honor someone.

I actually am not being devil's advocate. I really don't like statues of people in general, so I would rather them be more avante-garde than anything.

We'll agree to disagree. The statue isn't what I would call avant-garde. It's is an exact rendering of a basketball player, just one who doesn't look anything like DWade.

The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

I think it's awful, but Wade's giant IG story right now includes some pictures of him looking at the sculpture during the process of it being made.  Seems he knew what the sculpture would look like, and he seems extremely excited about it all.

You can buy the Michael Jordan statue for about $4 million. So my guess is that's about the same as the wade one.

Willie Geist concluded with a statement from the sculptor, who said "I did the best I could". As Geist pointed out, not exactly a ringing endorsement from the creator.
