Wow!!!
« on: September 14, 2024, 11:15:13 AM »
Marquette's basketball economics are incredible!  Not only are we in the top 10 in attendance but we also have a rich alumni base and are in a metropolitan area and are able to charge premium prices for seats, food, beverages, parking, etc. and still draw over 16,000.  Having a tie in with the Bucks allows us to get a portion of all the arena corporate advertising revenue as well.

Our program with elite revenues, facilities, and history has allowed us to become a national program where we can obtain blue chip players from anywhere in the country which is reflected by our roster with only one player from Wisconsin on it.  Our elite basketball program and its notoriety from being on tv sets across the country also provides free advertising for the university to continue to recruit students across the country.

Another little known fact is Marquette has an open invitation to schedule home and home series with any team in the country as teams from ACC, SEC and Big 10 are aggressive in calling us to express an interest and not the other way around.  The pageantry in playing in a beautiful, full pro stadium, with good payouts is very attractive to the opposing players and coaches.  The opposing alumni who make the trip also rave about the game experience, while also enjoy a weekend of checking out the sites and charm that Milwaukee brings.

So with all the above said... why did we schedule a home and home series with Dayton?  Why not a home and home series with Tennessee or Arkansas who also fill their big arena's.  At the very least a home and home with Auburn would have been great too and would have been an easy deal to get done with Bruce Pearl's Milwaukee experience.

Finally why is the sky always falling on this board?  The Power 5, now Power 4 is a misnomer, marketing ploy.  Most of these "power" conferences are full of dogs who don't even draw 10,000 a game, many "power" teams draw 5,000 or even less and hence why teams like Stanford, Cal, Washington State and Oregon State were left behind.  If the NCAA is losing their grip and there is a consolidation of the elite football programs trying to maximize revenues for themselves, then Marquette needs to plan now for a world when the NCAA is essentially gone.  At that point there could be distinct national power conference formats for the top 40 football programs and the top 40 basketball programs with higher payouts for these elite programs to their schools, coaches and players.  Marquette consistently being one of the top 10 richest/drawing programs would definitely be in prime position to be one of the leading members in the formation of this basketball mega conference.

With all of the above said having a forward thinking, aggressive, business savvy AD to lead Marquette in the future will be key.  I'm not a fan of an AD who schedules a home and home with Dayton and then also takes us out of our annual tradition of playing in a sexy Thanksgiving Basketball Tournaments against other great programs.  Hopefully Marquette makes smart hires of critical leaders who will maximize our resources and lofty position instead of minimizing it.

(this raptor list loses a lot of credibility by showing a huge jump in revenue for Georgetown, unless a billionaire alumni laundered money through the program by paying $20M for a courtside seat, this jump doesn't match up with average attendance of under 7,000 per game and Marquette's reciprocal drop makes no sense either).

Pretty sure Shaka scheduled Dayton because Marcus Freeman scheduled Northern Illinois.

As one who never thinks the sky is falling in regards to MU basketball, let me say welcome to the light.

As far as Dayton, why not?  Rabid fanbase, a history with MU.  Perhaps foreshadowing expansion.

Soooo MU's AD blew up all the positives you cite because of scheduling Dayton? I don't get your point.

Maybe he wants Marquette to hire Marcus Freeman as our new AD. Gotta hang something on the current AD to justify hiring Freeman.

Two points:

1. These figures are not "revenues" but are inflows into a budget. This can variously include NCAA revenue, tickets, concessions, booster money, and just as importantly, university subsidies... which prop up many programs.

2. Georgetown averaged 5,442 per game in 2022-23, including numerous free ticket giveaways and student seating. The large variance in spending is likely (but not confirmed) to be a combination of the multi-year Patrick Ewing buyout, the termination of his staff and whatever contracts they had, hiring Ed Cooley, the hiring of his staff, and increased costs to compete at Capital One Arena, where Georgetown apparently pays a market rate second only to Madison Square Garden on a per game basis. As budgets balance in fund accounting, revenues grow to meet expense.

duanewade:
Thanks for the Excellent analysis of why MU Basketball program ranks among the elite. MU has a program we can all be proud of.

A Few Points to consider with respect to this post:
1. MU Basketball Schedule is the responsibility of Mike Broeker, not the AD. Mr. Broeker scheduling is limited  by the availability of Fiserv Forum, as MU is not the owner of the building.
2. While MU is not participating in a holiday tournament this season, it has created the competitive equivalent ( or better)game wise by scheduling the Neutral Site game in Bahamas with Georgia and The first installment of the Dayton Series.
3. This years schedule is one of the better in recent years, as the first three easy games are much better grade than the usual cupcakes . All three of these opponents are coming off of solid seasons and one has the pre-season MAC player of the year on their roster. In addition, we have the first game of Maryland Home and Home, The Big 12 Match up versus Iowa State and The Badger game and Purdue game. Then we have two classic cupcakes.
4. The objective of the non-conference is to put up a very strong win loss record and win some games against quality opponents. I think MU has the chance to do that this season.
5. For Next season , there is no more Big East Big 12 Challenge. However, MU has locked in Maryland, Purdue, The Badgers and Dayton which is a pretty solid place to be in todays environment. There will likely be a MTE for 3 games plus Whatever Cupcakes can be scheduled.
6. As to the sky is falling, MU has an excellent program in an excellent conference and will be a survivor. The Big issue that MU faces is maintaining enough relationships with NIL providers to compete for talent. The dollars being thrown around college athletics are enormous. MU is lucky it doesn't have a Football team worth of NIL to deal with. However, MU will need access to a large 7 digit amount, to fund its share of settlements and arrange for continuing NIL ( in the current format). So the priority in hiring new President of University and AD are individuals who are strong at fund raising.

I believe Coach Smart is very close with Dayton head coach Anthony Grant and thus the Dayton scheduling connection. Plus, if you ever visit the UD Pride message board, the Dayton fans generally have an obsession with Marquette basketball.

You are correct about the connection with Grant, but I think this was a somewhat last minute thing when a rumored home and home with NC State fell through.

Shaka took over at VCU after Grant took the Alabama job. They were both assistants at Florida prior to getting their first HC jobs at VCU. They were both on the NABC BOD together too.

I love that we scheduled Dayton and hope it becomes a longer running series.
