Using that logic I would say that Cincinnati is a bigger rival. Those battles with Huggy Bear were epic.

I'd disagree but I can respect that take same with Louisville. I don't think either invalidates the history and rivalry with ND though. When I was a student (09-14) there were two teams that students would basically camp out/show up at the crack of dawn for Wisconsin and ND. Not Louisville or Cincy. What that says to me is that for at least half the old Big East era we were a part of that the student body considered ND a rivalry on par with WI not Ville or Cincy.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

I guess my ND hate has diminished after 30+ years on the west coast. Another way to look at it is if we could add one more long-term home and away series, who would you like to see? I would have no problem with ND but might prefer Illinois.

How about Rick Pitino and Louisville?
We get Rick again but with St. John.
Rick must like red uniforms.

As long as MU students keep getting rejected by ND, it'll be a rivalry.

I'm back.
ND hate is a great motivator.

FIRST, back in the day, Al wouldn't play ND because they wanted most of our gate.  ( I don't recall, 80/20, 90/10 whatever)  They wanted most of the money because they said their name would sell lots of tickets and bring in $$$.  Then when we went to South Bend they wanted the same split.  However, the deal was that most the their ticket sales were to students at student discount prices.  They are such a class act.  With ND it is all about the money.

SECOND, during the football season they were not to be seen in Milwaukee.  Then in winter they would show up trolling for dates.

Hope that doesn't sound too misogynistic.  Back then ND was all male, talk about misogynistic.

Does anyone remember the Fordham ND game at the garden, probably around 1972.?  We played in the second game.  A Fordham fan threw a big dead fish at ND and Digger.  It spun around on the court and expressed well the feelings of the Fordham fans toward ND.

I have been reading our blog, but not involved because it got dangerous for me.  The new tone, although still spicy, is IMO much better.

I turned 80, senior years 1965 and 1966.  Good health, I don't smoke and gave up the drink 46 years ago.  My days tending bar at the Vogue, across the Avenue from the library, will always remain with me.

Glad to have you back Vogue!  Thanks for your perspective.  Didn't realize that happened with the gate at MU ND games. Glad we did not comply.

Game was the first to sell out. 'Nuff said.

Yet, between ND, DePaul or Georgetown, it will be a toss up which formal rival hurts our NET rating the most?  #sleepinggiants

Btw, looking back, have any of the OBE Iscariots improved their football or basketball programs since their slinky midnight departures?

I graduated with Vic Lazzeretti and am totally ambivalent towards ND. I definitely want MU to win but am much more interested in somehow getting Ed Cooley to wear a damn hat.

Cmon dude. The man has a medical condition,  don't mane fun of him for that

Marquette needs to win by 20+ so that it does not hurt the net rankings

I could see Cooley in a porkpie hat on the bench.

My feelings on this being a big rivalry game has diminished a great deal over the past 5+ years. Still do not like ND but there are far more teams I would prefer to beat than ND. I am excited for a sellout tomorrow and going to the game with family and expecting a blowout. Again, there is very little I like about ND and that have not changed, just not a top rival for me.

I hate ND for lots of reasons.  I was looking for graduate schools and went to tour ND.  The priest who took us around was smug and arrogant.   Then, sitting around 8n a room he asked each in the tour what university they were graduating from.    I said Loyola University in  Chicago, and he basically rolled his eyes and grunted or something so I defended Loyola.   Then he quote ps this poem that makes a point that sometimes things are like a diamond in the rough.  He quotes a stanza and he is wrong on the quote.  Way off.  I knew the poem, by Thomas Gray, and I corrected him by reciting  the full stanza and he says, "Apparently they teach literature at Loyola."  I got up and said, "apparently better than they do at Norte Dame!"  And I walked out.   Went to Marquette!  Go Marquette!

This is the kind of story that is so absurd on first read that you assume it's fake, until you actually know ND alum/cultists.

I had a former coworker that looked into ND for his MBA.  Got accepted and did tour and whatnot.  Didn't love ND but knew and valued their alumni network.  During the tour, not sure if it was a priest or other admin, asked if anyone had looked at ND for undergrad.  Coworker mentioned he had gotten in but went to Michigan instead.  Guy was legit taken aback and said something along the lines of "UM must have offered a near full ride?"  Coworker told him he paid full tuition and was from upstate NY, so not instate either.  The exchange ended with the TOTALLY necessary explanation to everyone else that ND was naturally the dream school for nearly all applicants so it was surprising  :o

Had another friend of a friend in my mid 20s that was about as insane an ND alum as you'd find.  He delayed a Big 4 accounting career a year to stay in South Bend and work at the University, and then when he started working at Deloitte, he legitimately contemplated living in SB and commuting.  In his late 20s, with a good job and plenty of income living in an amazing city like Chicago, he routinely talked about missing South Bend.  Not just the campus, the actual dump that is South Bend.
