I get that.   I never considered Wisconsin a rival because they always stunk and the game always took place during winter break.  It wasn't until internet message boards that I developed a dislike of the Badgers.    But, because we played ND twice a season and and were 0-8 while I was at MU, my hatred of them is deeper and more long lasting.

Exactly how I feel.  Only difference is, we were much better during my 4 years- we were only 0-6 (class of 86).  😂

Went to two of the 3 games in SB too.  Just awful.

Went to the game last year, and it was one of the best moments of my fandom when we "we are Marquetted" them in their own gym. Going again Saturday (this time with Domer son - a bday present from him; he started at ND the year after the BE breakup, so this will be the first MU- ND game for us).

Skatastrophy

I made the trip to South Bend in 2012 and I did not have a great time. Sad town, rough game.

Their fans are weird. They had all of these prepared chants for while the game was on TV, but during breaks they all sat down and talked quietly amongst themselves. It was like I was on a tv set

Does anyone who attended Marquette after the 70s and 80s really care about Notre Dame?   I know in the 90s I was told they were a rival but it never felt like that big of a rivalry.   I'd rate ND well below Wisconsin and many Big East teams on the rivalry scale.

Or maybe you have to be from Chicago to care?

I'd have considered them on par with Wisconsin from 08-13.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Last year in South Bend, I witnessed an older ND fan grab a kid (probably 12 years old) by the shirt for standing too much...Can't stand that school. I want a 30 point win.

But are you really insulting Domers, or women and Catholics?

If we played Yeshiva University, would it be okay to wear a T-shirt that says, "Moses is my butt buddy?"

I am not being defensive; I am just a little surprised that you wouldn't get it.

Chick, lighten up. Just gigging you.

Yeah, it could be argued that it's both misogynistic and anti-Catholic.

Plenty of better ways to insult the Domers.

Sounds like something a notre dame fan would say

While we're down in the overall series by a large margin (38-81) we're 12-12 since Kevin O'Neil.

Hank was 3-3 against ND

Al was 5-3

Hickey 1-1

Don't need to talk about Nagle let alone Dukiet & Majerus who really struggled

Long before I ever knew much about Marquette , I hated Notre Dame. Our high school had a single football coach for the first 40 years of its existence and he was a notre dame alum, one that Al so aptly described. You either embraced his and Notre who or you hated them...both. I grew up on the hating side.
I was a freshman along with Doc, so the first year was heaven.
Subsequently in the 83-84 season we road tripped out to South Bend, same year they made it a dry campus there. We of course still tailgated pre game. A ton of ND fans told us we couldn't do that here. We told them "No, learn proper English. We may not be allowed to do this here, but in fact we are indeed doing it." Unfortunately Marquette got their butts beat that day.
Looking forward to an in person revenge game Saturday.

Fortunately, we went 3-1 vs ND during my time at MU -- including my favorite in-person Marquette shot ever, Glenn Rivers' buzzer-beater.

ND was very hate-able, led by the punchable Kelly Tripucka.

Wisconsin was a non-entity back then, and for many years after that.

Was at a Marquette - ND game in Milwaukee and there were a bunch on ND women fans with tshirts that said: Notre Dame sucks...but Marquette swallows.

Wow

I hate ND for lots of reasons.  I was looking for graduate schools and went to tour ND.  The priest who took us around was smug and arrogant.   Then, sitting around 8n a room he asked each in the tour what university they were graduating from.    I said Loyola University in  Chicago, and he basically rolled his eyes and grunted or something so I defended Loyola.   Then he quote ps this poem that makes a point that sometimes things are like a diamond in the rough.  He quotes a stanza and he is wrong on the quote.  Way off.  I knew the poem, by Thomas Gray, and I corrected him by reciting  the full stanza and he says, "Apparently they teach literature at Loyola."  I got up and said, "apparently better than they do at Norte Dame!"  And I walked out.   Went to Marquette!  Go Marquette!

  great story danny...well played!!

back in the day before we joined a conference, the independent days, notre dame depaul, loyola of chicago, detroit mercy were all despised, but we HATED ND .  not sure what made them so arrogant because they put their under britches on one leg atta time...if they wore any at all

Had a friend who graduated from ND.
Visited him one weekend.  Saw a ND vs Army FB game.
My takeaway was very isolated.
The exact opposite of Marquette.

ND does not consider us a rival. Period. This thread is embarrassing. Wisconsin only matters to cheds. IMO the team to hate is Seton Hall, followed closely by UConn.

Maybe MU needs to run off a string of 10 consecutive wins against ND.

ND 100% saw us as their rival in the old Big East. And given their (not very active) forum mentions digger and Al in the comments the old timers definitely remember the independent days. But yes there's 10yrs of students who don't have a clue that we were Big East rivals.

I graduated with Vic Lazzeretti and am totally ambivalent towards ND. I definitely want MU to win but am much more interested in somehow getting Ed Cooley to wear a damn hat.

Who would ND consider a mutual rival? I'm not sure anyone other than us think they are a rival.

In basketball? Now days probably nobody. But I don't think it's unfair to say that there's an awful long stretch where they would've called us a mutual rival and it's fine playing the game in honor of those days.

Using that logic I would say that Cincinnati is a bigger rival. Those battles with Huggy Bear were epic.

Digger was a big part of our hatred from that era.

Interesting. I grew up in Nashville and as such, Wisconsin was a mild irritant. That and we beat Wisconsin all four years I was at Marquette. Notre Dame was a rival and in my day, we were a basketball rival of the Irish because we both were really good.

For me, we played Tennessee in the early 1970s. I had dozens of obnoxious Vol fans who thought their team was far better than the Vols really were. We kicked their asses in Milwaukee and won in overtime is in Knoxville. Likewise, we played Vanderbilt for the first time in the 1974 Mideast regional. That was a rivalry. Of course, we won! But the games we played years later in Nashville and in Milwaukee were, to put it mildly, painful!

If Digger was a reason we hated the Irish, Al was a reason NDers hated Marquette!

If we want ND to be a rivalry again, start playing them more often.
