Waiting to get the UW job when Gard retires.?

Not a crazy thought. UW hoops barely has NIL money so he won't have to worry about it.

Pretty sure Tony is tired of the cesspool that college athletics has become, hey?

Where was he the last 30 years when it was also a cesspool, hey?

He's a UWGB alum.

I don't think that's right.  He's claimed by Badger fans as one of their own

Was it more of a cesspool this week than it was when he signed his huge contract extension just a few months ago?

That's the germane point.

I wouldn't want to coach in this environment, where you're already working year round trying to schmooze teenagers and now you have to worry about not just winning ball games but keeping your players satisfied with their licensing deals and having to play guys when it isn't in your team's best interest this season so they won't leave for next year when you'll actually need them.  The job is so much more difficult than it's ever been.

But that doesn't change the fact that you signed a deal not too long ago and you should honor it for at least one season to give your school, your staff and your players a year to plan their future appropriately.

Maybe there was a tipping point after which he said "no mas". Not hard to imagine.

It's a little hard to imagine that such a tipping point didn't arrive before he signed that contract, but maybe.

Why?

Because not much has changed much in the world of college athletics since June.

So I don't really know much about UVA and its fans; are they level headed or does their list include Wright, Few, Hurley, Calipari, etc.?

Talking to some on the Trilly board, they are generally grateful for the level Bennett elevated them to and bringing them a title. They are hoping Sanchez will be able to continue where he left off, but if it doesn't go well this year are content looking at other options. One did mention that they heard Shaka called UVA his dream job when he was at VCU. Personally, I imagine a lot has changed since he left there, but they seemed pretty level headed.

? He didn't need to sign an extension to ensure his successor. He was already under contract.

My point is that I doubt there was a recent "tipping point" that also didn't exist in June when he signed the contract.

I think he resigned in October so his top assistant would be named head coach and to give the players less flexibility to transfer.

So do you think he knew he was quitting when he signed his extension - to me that doesn't seem at all logical. Maybe the tipping point existed but hadn't (in his mind) reached that stage when he extended - that's at least makes some sense.

I also don't buy the idea that he waited to screw his players - doesn't seem like who he is.

We probably will never know why he waited until October to resign. It's simply out of character. It doesn't add up.

Yes. I think he brought Sanchez back to his staff with the intentions of retiring in such a manner that guaranteed him the job.

I don't know if I agree with this.  This Virginia team isn't supposed to be very good.  It's not like when Dick left UW-Madison and they had most of that Final 4 team left on the roster.  Unless he thinks this team is better than projected.  Sanchez is going to have to have one big season to get the job.

I suppose we could argue that this at least gives him the opportunity to prove his chops but I dunno
