No health issues according to Goodman.

Seems to be related to the current landscape.

How much has the landscape changed since he signed an extension in June?

This has got to be one of the more gutless moves ever

Tony Bennett meant to retire after the end of the college basketball season but unfortunately he ranks 351st in pace

The only MU coach to continue after announcing his retirement was Al McGuire. All he did in his lame duck season was win a National Championship.

Yes, I'm referencing a coach who announced his retirement.  Spot on.

LOL, so let me get this straight.

Bennett is retiring due to "the current landscape," in October, just a few months after his longtime assistant Ron Sanchez rejoins his staff after serving as head coach for Charlotte.

If that is true, that is high-grade bullsh*t by Bennett.

Just for clarity, Sanchez has been on staff for like a year and a half.  He was an assistant for Bennett all of last year.

But regardless, doing this to get Sanchez the job is insane cause his time at Charlotte wouldn't qualify him for the VCU job, much less UVA.

I would think it may go to Williford tho, he's been an assistant there forever

He was de-motivated.

Thank you for the correction. I think it's been reported that it will be Sanchez.

So I don't really know much about UVA and its fans; are they level headed or does their list include Wright, Few, Hurley, Calipari, etc.?

It's better to have a coach fully engaged with a season than mailing it in.  If Bennett was uncertain whether he wanted to coach or not it's probably better he doesn't instead of spending a season like Buzz not fully invested.

We live an hour from C'ville and are there frequently. Very levelheaded fans. I watched the TV news just to see if there were at least some rumors, but none were offered. All that is certain is that the retirement will technically begin Friday morning with, I would imagine, a warm, fuzzy farewell.

You're being pretty charitable.  Another way to look at it is that the transfer portal opens up for 30 days with a coaching change. But who would do that now with the semester started and opening tip just weeks away?

All those motions followed by 7 years of what was mostly catatonia. Thank you Bill Scholl.

Yes, this is a horrible situation for UVA and they have next to no chance to compete this season. They'd definitely be better off with a half-assed Bennett season than an October resignation. The only recent comparison I can think of is WVU without Huggins last year. (Obviously he departed under different circumstances.)
