Fearless and cheerful because it is so much fun.

The laugh he got calling them "cupcakes" was unexpected. It's interesting to look back on the phrases he coined in his career.

Yep. I was taken back a bit as well at that, until I realized he came up with it!

Way ahead of his time.

Al was a true wise guy, across the board. Still enjoyable to hear his voice after all these years later.

I went to every game of the 1970 NIT. Boy was Al really pissed at the NY press. Pistol Pete this Pistol that were main story lines, not the number eighth team in the country. After we beat Utah my class mates and I watched the press conference and all they asked Al is how is Marquette going to beat LSU.
Al was polite but you could see he was trying very hard to contain himself. After the semi final game where we held Pete to half his average and most of the points he did get were at the FT line Al had really had it. He said the score speak for itself gents, flips the bird and heads into the locker room. Hank had to take question from the press. After about 15 minutes Al did come back and answer a few question.

That 1970 NIT field was pretty impressive though Duke and UNC were not the "blue bloods" they are today.

Truly one of a kind.  We will never see coaches like him again.  He was never afraid to say what he felt was right.  He was brilliant and far ahead of his time.
