"Soft" Gold Out on Saturday against DePaul

I just got the email that I'm sure many of you got....fans are "encouraged" to wear gold on Saturday.

I thought for a gold out or something coordinated to this level we typically gave away a free shirt? This seems really half a$$ed....I have gold to wear, but there's no way you're going to get more than 50% of the crowd wearing one color unless you include a freebie. Otherwise what is the point?

This made me laugh.

I'm sure I just got spoiled during the late Crean years. Every other game was a giveaway: T shirts, bobbleheads, towels, etc. Just seemed that happened way more back then. And those were good teams....NCAA every year and most often we were ranked - so its not like we HAD to do it to get butts in seats. And we were paying Crean a lot then too.

I don't need a shirt. But I just feel like, if you want everyone to wear the same color, you have to make it easy on them.

I've been pleasantly surprised at how well we've done the stripe out without having free shirts.

If you have a sponsor paying for the giveaways that's one thing.  Many companies have cut back on that spend.    A t-shirt minimally these days is $5.   So figure from there - it's real money

Our marketing department sucks.

The shirts they'd give away were always way too big for me.  I always wore whatever color was needed of my own so it actually fit.  I couldn't tell you where any of the shirts from free giveaways ended up.

I think that's more a statement about our country's "nutrition" than our marketing department...
