40,000 is a tad high for commercial flights, which generally operate in the 30,000s

737s regularly cruise in the 37-41k range.

I know, because I fly swa 😂

Edit 2: attached photo of airplane near Alaska @ 40k. I should note, I'm not really arguing that it's actually a commercial aviation hazard. However, that is plausible deniability vs. a balloon @ 60k.  Hence "why" we could shoot it down.

Glad to see everyone has made it out of their bunkers after the last balloon scare.

I don't know, but I must say the commercials for the "Cocaine Bear" movie have intrigued me.  I am sure that Ray Liotta's dying wish was to live long enough to attend the premiere.

Meh, I live in Florida. Cocaine bear is just another day. ;D ;D ;D

If that were the case, it would probably be more likely a man with a rocket would have taken it down.

Yup.

My guess is that American intelligence was ecstatic over this balloon. It probably means that Chinese satellites are unable to do what American ones do, so they had to send more primitive devices at lower altitudes. We shot it down in a place (shallow water rather than inaccessible mountain terrain) where we could recover all of the instruments and know what they were trying to do and what their capabilities are. We know now how they uplink with chinese satellites and the types of information they were attempting to steal.

Make no mistake. We are using technology that none of us even know about to spy on China. I am also sure we have low altitude drones - probably with stealth technology - with the capability of identifying people on the street.

We can now understand why it is such a high priority for the Chinese to steal American military technology. They really are that far behind.

That is...not wise thinking...

You are assuming that all of our military technologies have been made public. I don't think that is wise.

Reminds me of the orientation that I and other new hirees for a tech job  back in 2002 went through. Our boss was a former Intelligence operative and one thing he said was that not a single one of us had ever even imagined some of the technologies that the military already had in use. I don't think it is any different today.

WASHINGTON — An American fighter jet, acting on the orders of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, shot down another unidentified flying object on Saturday, Canadian and American officials said, in the latest twist of the ongoing drama playing out over the skies of North America.

"I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace," Mr. Trudeau said in a statement he posted on Twitter. He said an American F-22 with the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which is operated jointly by the United States and Canada, "shot down the object over the Yukon."

As with the object that President Biden ordered shot down on Friday, officials said they have yet to determine just what was shot down over the Yukon Territory.

Mr. Trudeau said he had spoken with Mr. Biden Saturday afternoon. "Canadian Forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object," he said in his Twitter post, adding, "Thank you to NORAD for keeping the watch over North America."
