Time to listen to 'The Rising' again and remember acts of heroism on the streets of New York, in the towers, those who strove to get others to safety, those who were going up the stairs, at the pentagon, and in the air.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

I still think of that day often, and the many heroes who risked their own lives (and far too many who gave their lives), as well as those who were simply in or near the towers, going about their day.

One of the worst days in American history and one that changed our nation forever. In some ways, it doesn't seem like it was 21 years ago; in others, it seems like it was way more.

My wife was scheduled to have a breakfast meeting at Windows on The World that fateful day. A restaurant on the Top of Tje World Trade Center

I was traveling in California . Was working out in the hotel gym was watching highlights of the Giants game on Sports Center when the news broke on the tv screen  of the hit to the first tower

The phone lines were busy for many hours . In that period I didn't know what happened to my wife .

Eventually I was able to get through and found out she had cancelled the breakfast . Divine intervention.

The losses of people we knew were many. For those who survived many changed their outlook on life .

I choose to honor heroism than dwell on fear, cowardice, and hate.   Too much of the latter and not enough of the former in the world.

I was in the DC area that morning, conducting a meeting with my local staff along with several Richmond employees who accompanied me. When a guest speaker failed to arrive and I phoned him, he told me that a plane had just crashed into the Pentagon. I will never forget the moment he told me that. We immediately headed back towards Richmond and I 95 had turned into a parking lot. I remember thinking how easy it would be for a plane to crash into the massive backup.

Several weeks later, we learned that the daughter of one of our customers was killed in the Pentagon attack. About the same time, I drove past the massive Pentagon complex, covered with gigantic tarps but with plenty of blackened surface showing. Again- something that I will never, ever forget. Understandably, most people identify the attack with the World Trade Towers but for me, it was the charred Pentagon and our customer's daughter's death.

In the midst of the national tragedy, we came together as a nation in our grief but also in our strength. I wish I could end my comments here, but I honestly wonder if that kind of post tragedy unity would be possible today, 21 years later. I think not.

I can't even imagine what you went through that day. Very happy to hear your wife's plans changed. Some of the close call stories are chilling.
