ND never really had a chance

But absolutely wild that after the 18 play drive that kept OSU off the field they did not give their dynamic running back a carry in either of the next two drives

Running the QB 9 times isn't sustainable. But they just ignored trying to get it to love to control clock and went to Leonards arm?

Then a predictable fake punt down 21 instead of just lining up to run. Crazy.

Quote from: The Sultan on December 04, 2024, 08:16:03 AMI think Ohio State might still be the best team in college football right now. They lost by one point on the road at Oregon, with that fluky ending, and lost to a Michigan team that they clearly have a mental block against. Depending on the bracket, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see them roll to the championship game. Ohio State under Day has been very good. Urban Meyer good? No. But they are still the class program of the Big Ten.

ND gets back into it. Plenty of time. Still completely abandoning the run

Then they try a FG???????

Look for billboards from Michigan fans to spring up in Columbus.

Do you suppose Day keeps his job now?

The fact that Will Howard referred to Michigan as "the team up north" in the post-game presser means that, while Ohio State owns the trophy, Michigan still owns Ohio State.

Just wild. No clue how they ever lost to Michigan.  But at the same time, this was always a top 2 roster that finally started playing like such.

You know exactly how they lost to Michigan. The same way ND lost to NIU.

It's called sports.

I understand his thinking on this one. He was hoping to turn a two TD + 2 pt conversion to tie game into a 13 point, two TDs gets you a win game. They stopped OSU on the next possession and scored a TD. If they had scored again and missed the 2 pt conversion they would have still needed a FG to win. It's not the indefensible move you're making it out to be.

Now, the fake FG earlier in the game; Even Dan Campbell wouldn't have tried that.

It was totally indefensible.  Tried to make a 2 score game a 2 score game with under 10 minutes to play, at a point in the game where OSU had scored on every single drive in the game except one, when they fumbled on 2nd and 8 at almost midfield.

The Sultan

Right. Especially in retrospect. The last time they got the ball back was with :26 seconds left in the game. Even if they made that FG and scored the TD with an XP, they wouldn't have another drive.

Not to mention, even if they didn't get the TD there, and their defense managed to hold up, they still could have tied the game with two possessions.

$13M a year for Ryan Day. I guess not beating Michigan in November is OK when you win 'em all in December and January.

Day's contract mandates he is one of the top 20 paid members of the football team.

Quote from: Pakuni on February 12, 2025, 03:33:45 PMI guess it's better than hiring him as an offensive coach.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43811715/ohio-state-hire-ex-nfl-coach-matt-patricia-dc

My OSU friends are baffled.  Taking the angle of "we just won a Natty, so we can't complain too much...but WTF".   Chip Kelly was a bit surprising at the time given he hadn't been anything but a HC in 15 years, but his history with Ryan Day made it much more understandable.  This though?  Sheesh.  I mean, maybe Ryan Day admired his defensive acumen when he was at BC during the dynasty?  But still, he hasn't been a DC, much less a good one, in almost a decade, and reports about him in Detroit were...not good.

Quote from: tower912 on February 12, 2025, 03:37:13 PMI don't know how he keeps finding work.

I mean, he went right back under BB's wing in NE.  Same way, McDaniels always has a home at Foxboro.  And those were smaller, assistant/position coach roles.  Then Srianni and Fangio took a flier on him for a year last year, which again wasn't all the surprising.  Was a bit surprising that he got elevated to play calling, but then he couldn't find a job after he stunk it up to end the 23 season.

That being said, this is wild.  Its not like he got hired to coach OL or DL, he's taking over as DC for the defending champ on a presumably multi-million dollar deal.  Shocking
