In less than 11 months since stepping foot on campus, the Smart family has improved both the state of the athletic program and the entire University as a whole.  Anyone who does not appreciate that should go root for Notre Dame.  Thank you Shaka & Maya!

Maya soft pedaled being the choice for "Christmas Mother" in this article. There was a long tradition of selecting someone who was socially prominent as well as wealthy. The socially prominent factor often included an "FFV" (First Families of Virginia), meaning a descendant of families that trace their ancestry back to colonial times. It was much more than a decision to choose a young black woman. The choice of Maya was pivotal in a city that was firmly rooted in the past.

Brother MU:

Less brainwashing and more stuck in a construct based on past experience.

In the years since I was graduated, I've come across more than a few people who are either angry or bitter because of the combination of cost and lack of support for their educational efforts. Many don't give to Marquette because they think the university is awash in money.

It isn't -- perhaps unfortunately, but it isn't.

Into the construct of "I didn't get any" comes targeted gifts and people become angered. It's the old "why should they get it when I didn't" view of the world. This anger is especially prevalent when funds and opportunity are earmarked for specific groups of people, whoever they are.

Perhaps it's because my wife and I experienced some of the worst of human nature vented at our children because of the implications from being born into overseas orphanages, but our eyes have been opened to the fact that we really don't understand the conditions from which many disadvantaged folks come. We can't understand because our middle class experiences are very different. Just like few who lives in upper middle class America can understand conditions in a post-Soviet era orphanage, few of us can truly understand what happens in a community where bullets fly, schools stink and traditional families and infrastructures that encourage us, don't often exist.

We should celebrate the folks that make a difference, rather than disparage them.

As a side note, one of my good friends is involved in University of Texas athletics and had several opportunities to meet with Coach and Mrs. Smart. His comments from Day 1 were we were getting an incredible coach and, importantly, two incredible people. Boy was he right! On both counts.

Yet another outstanding post. Thanks for offering the unique insights you have.

It was due to his Jewish mother. Don't forget his first miracle was a result of her prodding at the wedding at Cana.

I like to imagine the situation where she goes up to him at the wedding and says, "Bubala, they ran out of wine" and he's all "Jeez, Mom, what do you want me to do about it? You're embarrassing me in front of all of my friends!"

Mom to Jesus: "I'm not going to tell you what to do, but, you are the Son of God and I'm going to be veeeeerrrrrrrry disappointed if my best friend's wedding isn't perfect! Jesus, I'll be hearing about that at the Temple Euchre game for months!"

Jesus to Mom: "It's too late to call Meyer over at the wine distributor and get a delivery. His donkeys are being fed and watered..."

Mom to Jesus: "Is that sass I hear????"

Jesus to Mom: "Yes Ma'am.... I'm on it!"

I'm only your mother.   Would it hurt for you to step away from your 12 friends for a moment and do something nice for the woman who brought you into this world? Hanging out with fishermen.  Oy.  I tried to raise you better than that.

I think what Billy is trying to say is ...why not maintain a single fund that helps all students that encounter a financial emergency hardship? (making a monetary donation in someone's name, i.e. Bo Ellis, to that single fund). Definitely a great commitment by Coach Smart. (Btw, anyone know how the university makes known to students that a fund is available for such emergencies?)

I did say that but the woke guilt complex many have fallen into refuses to allow one to read it that way and instead virtue signal and attack.

Here's how I see this in a real life situation. My niece and nephew are at MU and an emergency happens necessitating they go home. Or maybe they both are out of money. My niece (white and NA) gets nothing, my nephew (adopted Black young man) qualifies and gets help. How is that not blatant discrimination to deny one sibling because of the color of her skin? What about a Hmong refugee, or a DACA kid who can't get federal aid? MU should be above segregating our student body; help all who need it. Disappointing.

Your niece would get nothing? Does MU not offer money/funds for emergency assistance for all students?

Yep. Reverse racism is WAAAY worse than boring, old, regular racism. And that's the way it's been in America for hundreds of years. If only white people could catch a break someday.

No.  This would not happen.  Marquette has emergency funds available for ALL students.  The ones from this Ellis Endowment will be used to support black students specifically.  So in this (what I am sure is a real life and not at all fake) situation, if they qualify, both would get support.  Your nephew's MAY come from the Ellis Endowment.

This isn't a "virtue signal."  It is an accurate representation of how these things work.

It has been explained to you multiple times that MU (like most universities) have emergency funds available to all students. The Smarts' donation is setting up a separate fund specifically for Black students, this does not remove the already existing fund. In fact, it frees up more money for other students because Black students who may have applied for that money previously now have another option.

Let's change the subject here a bit from racism and the smarts...

And here is a hot take... Golf Sucks. It's boring. It's lazy. It takes an insane amount of skill. But there is so little joy in it. Also it's expensive. Ugh. I hate golf.

fj, you have made it hard to give your opinions any credence. Golf is wonderful! I love it, even though I'm quite mediocre. The nice thing about that is, you remember the good shots disproportionately. When I used to play better, I tended to remember the bad ones.

In fact, golf is so important to me that I can't figure out why I haven't moved south so I could play all year. Oh, wait a minute, it's because of the woman I married - the only possible thing that could be more important than golf.
