Kolek-t call from DC
« on: January 07, 2022, 07:28:15 PM »
1.  Wonderful ball movement.
2.  I remember saying early in the year that the structure of the offense reminded me of the midgets.  The last two games have really shown that.
3.  Took advantage of Georgetown when they were down.
4.  All of those guys throwing OMP and TKo under the bus ...
5.   Two great games in a row.   Make it 3.

Lots of dunks. Only complaint about tonight is the defensive rebounding. Back to back great games though.

Hopefully Stevie keeps developing on offense because his defense for a freshman guard is really, really good.  He gets a little grabby but we havent had a young guard who could move his feet like that in a while.

I was talking to a colleague earlier that this team did remind me of the midgets team, that team lost a ton of close games but they were gritty.

Simpkins praise of Kolek during the broadcast was well-intentioned but seemed like backhanded compliments and a bit of racial microaggressions. He described Kolek as crafty, high basketball IQ and unathletic. Maybe I’m watching a different game but I think Kolek is quite  athletic! Does he have a 45-inch vertical? No. But he constantly beats his man off the dribble and can splice through the defense. He’s the straw that stirs our drink right now.

I was fortunate enough to see that midgets team in a open gym. I said at the time that I had no idea how good they would be, but they’d be fun to watch. As you point out, this team is very similar.  It is a nice change.

When Kolek is going downhill……his assists are textbook. When he is not…..when he is drifting away from the intended target it’s 50/50 at best. Great to see TKI take advantage early tonight.

I don’t disagree with any of the comments. But it was weird to compare him to Steve Nash in one breath and say he’s not athletic in another. I’m super excited about Kolek. His court vision is incredible and he’s only going to get better. But to Simpkin’s point, he’s probably not NBA material. But that means we have three more years of him and he’s still got a ton of upside

Flew down to DC for the game and wound up having dinner with a group of about 3 dozen Pennsylvanians wearing an inordinate number of MU 4 jerseys.

After laying eggs offensively through December, MU has now played two back to back great complete offensive games (both halves). Two best offensive games of the season. Keep it going and we are a force.

That said, this defense has been very good all season even in the games where the O has been bad. Now 45th in KPom and even higher in Haslam. Fun

Tyler Kolek is so good. Really impressed how good he is on the defensive end, and watching him, the combination of DeAndre Haynes and Darryl Morsell seems to be paying off. His distribution, active hands, and ability to fight through screens has all improved as the year has gone on. I love watching him play.

What's the season record for blocks? I know that the 4-year record is Jimmy Mac's 199.  Kur has to be close.

The season record for blocks is 142 (McIlvaine, who has 4 of the top 5 seasons all time)

Kur has 47 with 14 games plus postseason remaining.  Kuath won't be able to touch 142, but he could chase down Mac's 2nd best season of 92 blocks.

The season record for assists is 274 (Tony Miller, who has 4 of the 6 MU seasons over 200).

Kolek has 92 assists with 14 games plus postseason remaining.  At his current pace Kolek would be at about 170 through regular season.  He could have a shot at Diener's highest year (187, 7th all time at MU).

Interestingly, Mac's 142 blocks and Miller's 274 assists both came in the 1993-1994 season

++ Tremendous energy and high-quality play throughout. Really fun to watch the ball movement and aggressiveness on offense, and the quick hands on D.

++ Kolek and O-Max really set the tone early.

++ There was a noticeable drop-off offensively after Kolek went out with his second foul. Beyond the "measurables" like assists and points, he is by far the best on the team at simply organizing the offense. For that reason, he's the most important player on the team.

++ Hopefully Stevie can develop into an offense organizer, too, because Kolek can get in foul trouble, can miss a couple games with Covid or injuries, etc.

++ I'm not gonna waste my time going back and reading the posts about O-Max being garbage. Some Scoopers never effen learn. Very high ceiling for this young man.

++ Another strong game from our 5 position. Kuath again was very active and had his first double-digit rebounding game as a Warrior Eagle.

++ Elliott made three 3s to lift his season percentage to .472. He also had 4 nice assists for the second straight game. So nice to see him healthy and effective.

++ Georgetown isn't very good even at full strength, and they were really really bad tonight ... but of course Marquette had something to do with that.

++ Cam Brown had some really nice plays ... at least according to the play-by-play guy. Kam Jones did, too!

++ We Are Marquette!

Someone called him out on Twitter a few weeks ago, they predicted transfer.

I replied that we’re more likely to retire his number than see him transfer.

Dude is a dude.

He is an amazing passer, has a natural gift that I’m not even sure Shaka knew he had when he brought him on board.

Today he showed some additional skills scoring and finishing at the hoop.

He is invaluable controlling the offense and his importance to the team is immeasurable.

Some have said he’s a great defender- I won’t go that far, I think Stevie has the makings of a great defender. TyKo is very engaged and scrappy though, he fights and holds his own.

As for his shot- Shaka obviously saw something there and he’s been able to make them in the past, so there’s a possibility he ends up a much much better 3P shooter, but I would guess highly unlikely he ends up elite. That would turn him to the next level type of player that “gets his number retired.”

All that said, I’d argue that we are much more likely to retire his number in our hearts than in actual MU history. He’s for sure a dude, but a lot of dudes don’t have their number retired.

The fans will love him and he will stuff the assists stat sheets, I just don’t think he will get to Diener and Tony Miller levels. That’s ok though, doesn’t mean he won’t be a great MU player who fans will love.

I did enjoy, as much as you can enjoy a turnover, the sequence where Kolek tried to pass in the lane with 3-4 Hoyas and it was tipped and stolen, but immediately got back on defense and 5 seconds after the turnover stuck his hand out and stole a pass one-handed like he was a 1970’s Oakland Raider wide receiver (like he had stickum on his hands for you younguns)

Kolek is going to be one of those guys that opponents will think he played at MU for 10 years and that is what makes him special. This is kid has the shortest memory out there, sees the floor at a very level and is a very smart defender, that is recipe for success. He is quickly becoming one of favorite players over the past twenty years.

I agree completely. Such a joy to watch. Everyone else is gonna hate him.

Agreed.  He will be one of those guys other teams lament “he’s still there?”.

No, it's not just about you. You are not the only basketball know-it-all around this board.

Perhaps this is why Ewing can’t keep any good players around longer than two years.

JTIII, on the other hand, liked the grit showed by the guys at the end. Down 32 and playing against the B-team, they could have just given up, BUT DIDN'T.

Plenty of other posters on record in that thread proclaiming “they will routinely score in the 50’s”

They’re in a really bad spot now.

When Mullin stepped down, you could tell he was not remotely into it all and just wanted to step aside. I don’t get that feeling with Ewing and he is running/has run the program into the ground.

Bad roster construction/retention.  Didn’t have great recruiters at the beginning of his tenure and he’s been chasing ever since.  I think he can coach fine but building a roster hasn’t been a strong suit.

Georgetown needs a fresh start and someone with a lot of connections in the metro D.C. area.

Kolek’s court vision is unnatural!   And the accuracy of his very difficult passes is stratospheric - amazing vision and touch.   And loved he finished at the rim a few times.  Georgetown was waiting for the outlet pass and he finished at the rim.   That was a thing of beauty!

He's got a title and a .500 record over four years. That's hardly "running the program into the ground". They're not DePaul.

He'll be gone soon but it's not the worst effort we've seen from a coach in the Big East.

Haha, exactly what I thought when the response was “well shucks thanks for actually pointing out that I was correct cause they did score on the 50s ya know).  95% of trams will have a few games a year in the 59s so if his prediction was that they would at least a couple times that’s really going out on a limb.

Ahh the old Wojo argument of “500 record!” Throw out the MEAC they beat up on every year and the record changes drastically. He’s never been over 500 in conference and I’m sure his overall record against real opponents isn’t that great either.

There's one other one.  J5 said what you quoted and another agreed with him.  Tower and I said there would be games in 50s, which ended up being correct. It wasn't that bold of a prediction, we had three of those last season.

But J5 was pretty pessimistic so troll away! It makes me chuckle every time

'Big John is rolling over in his grave'.

He's right when he says Big John is rolling over in his grave. But he's wrong when he infers the reason for it is because of the players.

Georgetown was below .500 in 2016 and 2017 and fired John Thompson III as a result.  It has had only one season above .500 since.

More concerning, perhaps: averaging 5,650 a game in a 20,500 seat arena. (One of those games was free admission.) A decade ago, it was 11,283 per game.

Even taking the bad weather into consideration, the GT/MU game was on a Friday evening and the huge number of empty seats really surprised me. I think the records for all coaches should be evaluated after taking the cupcakes out of the win totals. A .500 record is nothing to brag about, especially when it includes maybe 5 cupcake wins. Every coach loses players to tranfer but Akinjo, McClung and Wahab to name just a few? Wow! I once thought it would be great to have an alumnus as coach but after the Mullin fiasco and Ewing, maybe Jordan as well just not getting it done has convinced me that alumni are high risk because it is very difficult to part ways unless they choose to do so when it simply is not working. Do you think Ewing will resign, maybe go back to an NBA team as an assistant? Is there any way he gets fired? I really doubt it. Your thoughts on how all this might play out?

Georgetown under performance hurts the Big East. They had a very well recognized brand for a long time.
