Yes.  Hop over to Leuven and stay a few nights in Antwerp.  I prefer Antwerp to Brussels in general.

Thx for the Keys tips.  I'm there right now.

Yeah, we are just using Brussels as a base for a series of visits.  Bruges, Ghent, a side trip to the Netherlands.
Trains are easier than moving around multiple times.
Enjoy the keys!

Ok that makes more sense.  Its a good hub for that.

I really prefer anywhere in Belgium.  Antwerp is such a great cultural center with so much history.  Ive been there so many times there for work it took going with my wife last month to re-appreciate it as a city.  Bruges, Ghent, Leuven, and Liege is actually quite cool too.

Brussels just feels kind of one note.  I know the palace and such is there, and the EU is there so its quite multicultural, but it really is otherwise unremarkable IMO.

I couldn't agree more, you're spot-on.  I would hit Maastricht if you can pbiflyer.  I think it's about an hour and a half from Brussels.

Thanks for all the advice. We had a nice AirBnB in Ghent, but they closed due to Covid, so Brussels was really plan B.

Had Leuven and Liege on the plan. Will look at Maastricht to add. We have a free boy’s day while the wife and daughter have a day planned.

Thanks!

Just spent 3 days in Maastricht and wholeheartedly agree .  Recommend the Botticelli for a small hotel just off the main square . great walking town.lots of cafes and charm.   In Amsterdam often and stay away from crowded Centrum. Day visits to Leyden, the Hague or Haarlem have the same canals, ancient architecture and quaint shops without the hordes of people.

Okay, it’s on the list. Now I am reconsidering Brussels as the base. Maybe Antwerp?

Back on topic. If you like Fargo, A Simple Plan seems to be in a similar vane.

My favorites include
All That Jazz
My Favorite Year

I’d have to think on more.

I would 2nd Antwerp.  Leuven is also a lot of fun.  Both are just as close to Bruges  and closer to the Netherlands.  Antwerp is a much more enjoyable city than Brussels imo.

That's a real good list, Lenny, including your "others" and comedies.

When I was growing up, one of the NY stations used to televise Marx Brothers movies pretty regularly on Saturday nights. My brother and I would watch 'em and then drive our parents nuts on Sunday quoting them. "Two more hard-boiled eggs!" "If I hold you any closer, I'll be in back of you." "Get your Tootsie Frootsie ice cream!"

I never saw Whiplash and I don't really remember it. I just now googled it and it looks pretty good. I think I'll check it out!

Lenny we don’t agree on a lot but I absolutely agree on a memento and whiplash. There is hope for us.

Good list Lenny.  I'm a fan of Spanish Prisoner.  House of G is a really good film.

Amadeus is my #1
I’ll watch Patton anytime it’s played.

I’m a sucker for Sound of Music.

Agree with 82 on The Sting.

Comedy:  The Bird Cage.

Great call on Amadeus!  That laugh is hilarious.   I might add Run Lola Run as an honorable mention.

Commonalities provide the basis for all relationships. Too often politics (biases we have little control over) or sheer coincidence (the school we went to, the town we’re from) provide that basis. In my experience what we consume and what moves us in the arts is a better, more accurate measure of who we are. So there is hope for us, indeed!

Amadeus is my favorite as well.

Speaking of Bird Cage, have you seen the French original, La Cage au Folles?  I saw it at the Varsity Theater.

What's not to like about Amadeus?

Great music. Great costumes. Great conflict. Checks off all the boxes for an outstanding movie.

Salieri would not have liked the film.

Predator gets the nod from me. Commando and Last Action Hero are top 20s.
