It is as it should be.
No returning established scorers.
Biggest name transfers are known for their defense
Nearly total roster turnover.
Lots of 3 star recruits.

It is possible that Coach Smart catches lightning in a bottle.   But viewed without the blue and gold goggles, why should more be expected.

Counterpoint: Before even playing a game, Shaka is picked to finish ahead of the defending Big East champions. Give the man a raise.

You may need some reeducation post Wojo, but defense is half of the game.  Additionally good defense can turn into easy offense.

I'm glad I already had my morning coffee. I would have spilled it on my keyboard. Was not expecting much love from the BE coaches but just barely edging Georgetown? The national sportswriters' forecasts did not bother me but the BE one stings. I was hoping for 7th but at least 8th- not barely escaping 10th.

Absolutely.  I hope it does.   I miss  watching the team force turnovers and turn it into points.

I'll miss Cain.  Theo's 4 years were up already, Garcia was going to be a one-and-done, and Carton didn't want to be in college anymore, so these were known goners. Coach Smart did the best job possible in keeping some of the talent coming in. All things considered, this will be a fun roster with low expectations and hopefully plenty of surprises.  A lot like the 90-91 season when MU took on some big dogs (Duke, Kansas, Michigan, OK State, etc) with a young team, lost a few by a lot, but set the foundation for nice run.

I would have picked us last as I have no idea how this team will perform on the court. Low expectations, yes; but hope I'm surprised. Also, respect is earned.

And what idea do you have of how DePaul will perform on the court?

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Honestly,  was expecting 10th. On paper, we are the second worst team in the conference. Fortunately, the game isn't played on paper.

None of them coached with or against Al McGuire, so their opinions still don't matter

I see Nova and U Conn at the top of the conference . Based on evaluating the rest of the teams, I continue to believe MU has a shot at the 3rd spot.

I like what our 5 experienced players bring to the table and I think the two experienced reserve's will add some athleticism.   One of the freshman will emerge as Big East ready. Collectively that is enough to compete.

I am putting a high weighting on the three Super Seniors, because each brings one Very Good Skill Set ( A rim protector, A defender and a 3 Point Shooter). Maybe Coaches, Press and MU Fans don't view them as positively as I do which of course would lead to a much lower pre season ranking.

We'll be okay MU hoops peeps.  Don't get distraught over a poll.  Our time will come and much sooner than people realize.  Book it.

Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette and St. John's only have three players returning.
St John's clearly has the best three players returning.
Creighton of these five teams has the best group of incoming players.

Muggsy, I am with you 100%. I cannot wait for the season to get started.

OK, we split our season with DePaul and are tied for last. Feel better?

Oh no no no! DePaul has clearly earned the respect that you said Marquette needed to earn. Their stellar BE record over the years earns them the respect to be above Marquette, which is where you placed them.

Brother Herm:

Damn straight. The prediction will be great bulletin board material to motivate our team.

I don't know what we have, but the notion that we can do no better than DePaul is nuts. I do hope when coaches deveop game plans for us, they use the same nonsense that they did when we were ranked 9th by the league's coaches.

I'm betting third to fifth and a reasonable chance at the NCAA.
