Guys on the EyeonCBB podcast (Parrish and Norlander think MU made a good hire.

That they had an emergency podcast for Marquette is a pretty strong statement about the perception of this hire.

This hire will be well thought of nationally. MU married up today the BE should be put on notice.

100% agree. We went from bottom tier (ahead of only DePaul and maybe Butler) to top tier (behind only Wright and on a par with Hurley) in coaching ability. I was all in on Moser (still think he's an awesome coach) because I didn't think Shaka was a realistic possibility. Thrilled to find out I was wrong.

Love the enthusiasm you are putting out, it's infectious. Great to see you this way after the last couple seasons.

I agree.   Love the enthusiasm Goose!

I was having this same thought and talking with friends. Where would we put Shaka in relation to other Big East coaches. I didn't have anyone definitively ahead of him. We thought in a tier below Wright with Hurley and McDermott

I think Goodman was lined up to receive a portion of Moser's new contract at MU. He's been pushing Moser hard and seems genuinely bummed he didn't get the job.

I'll be honest and say Goose has me fired up since yesterday with an MU ra-ra.

When's the season start?

Perusing some of the other BE message boards there seems to be a pretty strong consensus this was a good hire for MU, Smart and the BE more generally.

FWIW, MU/Smart is still on ESPN's "Top Headlines" this morning

There's a lot going on, the fact that it has been on there since announced is an indication of how big this is

Well at least we are getting a return on our investment in the Russian click farm.

Texas fans are thrilled Shaka's gone.  They didn't like him any more than MU fans liked Wojo.

Will be interesting to see who they get to replace him.
correct. Go to BurntOrangeNation. UT seems to think of MU as a mid-major and a good fit for Shaka.

There aren't many fan bases as delusional and out of touch as Texas fans.  It's one of the most toxic athletic departments in the nation.

Made the Final 4 in 2003, 7 Elite 8's and 10 Sweet 16's in school history.  Considered a "sleeping giant" by some.  Never been close

i hammered, er, educated, a bunch of Bevo's on BurntOrange. UT does have a boatload of ncaa bids. Durant was a 1-dun Longhorn. They lost to 'Cuse in the '03 FF, same year we got toasted by KU.

The previous coach(s) were more successful than Smart at Texas.

In 17 seasons, Rick Barnes made a Final Four, 2 Elite 8's, 2 Sweet 16's, won 19 NCAA Tourney games, won 3 Big 12 Titles, finished 2nd 5 times.

Shaka Smart has never won a regular season league title in 12 seasons in 3 leagues. He has made the NCAA 2nd weekend 1 time in 12 seasons as a HC, none at Texas. He didn't win any NCAA games there. His best league finish was 3rd twice in six seasons. He made the NCAA Tourney 3 times in 6 seasons at Texas. He had a losing league record there, including 3 straight seasons.

In Barnes' first 6 seasons at Texas, he won the regular season league, finished 2nd 4 times, 3rd once. He made the Final Four and Sweet 16 as well in that time.

Hopefully Smart can get Marquette back to Buzz like levels of basketball success, winning the Big East Regular Season Title, advancing to NCAA Tourney 2nd weekend 3 times, etc...within his first 5 years at MUBB. He will get a chance to do those things at MU.

How many of those have been recent? I'm sure UT was placed in the Mid West region in the early years of the Tournament when there were only 24 teams, where the P5 team was automatically in the sweet 16 or 32 teams where they only had to win one game. MU as an independent always had to play that first early round game.

Almost all of them are recent.  In the 1970s and 80s, they had some good competition in the old SWC with Arkansas and later on with Houston.  But the SWC wasn't traditionally a very strong basketball conference.  Form 1970-78, the conference champion only won two games in the entire tournament - both in the first round.

In 1979, the Sidney Moncreit lead Arkansas Razorbacks got to the Elite 8 where they lost to Larry Bird's Indiana State Sycamores by 2.

Not only do I agree with what Bilas says, I think it's interesting he said it given that he was ALWAYS in Wojo's corner.

The national perception for the Shaka hire has been incredibly positive.

And BTW, Austin and Madison are not representative of the national perception on this topic.

After 7 years under Wojo, UT is right.

Thankfully, it is a situation that can be remedied.
