A great website  to track shipping traffic real time throughout the world. You can see the back up around the Suez canal.

That's cool.  Not to go down a rabbit hole but I am again struck by the relative emptiness of the south Pacific. No way they find Tom Hanks on that raft.

Just for fun, you can now try to steer your own ship through the canal. I ran aground my first try....

I've come to the conclusion that the fastest this can be done is just a bit over 52 seconds.  Maybe trying to set speed records is what led to the original accident.

While I think you're just making a joke regarding the Sym, I've seen and read that speed was an important factor and perhaps not in the way most people would assume.  It took 'high speed' (meaning a considerable force vector) to minimize the necessary crab configuration required while transiting the canal in those conditions.  They simply had to 'gun it' to keep the giant ship as straight as possible.  Bottom line, regulations and procedures simply haven't kept up with ships of this new size in close quarters like Suez.  She simply shouldn't have made the attempt in those conditions.  Like always, it takes disasters for the reality to sink in.  We just ain't as smart as we think we are.

I LOL when ever I read that ship could hold 20,000 containers when in reality they meant 20,000 TEU's which is a considerable difference

No joke. It's possible to do that thing in about 52 seconds at 100% power. It took about 10 minutes of experimenting during my lunch yesterday to figure it out. I am moderately embarrassed to admit that (as I should be).

Pedal to the metal was the only way I could complete it.

Yeah, that's what I discovered. When I first saw the link I tried it a couple times at a "reasonable" speed and crashed without getting very far at all. My first impression was that it was pretty much impossible.  I came back to it at lunch and decided to try it at full power and figured it out within just a few tries.

I changed speeds a few times but my best transit I was at 60% for most of it.

Great another thing to take up my time instead of doing things I should be doing....

I ran it at 100% with only three rudder adjustments (two clicks each).
