It's not exactly easy to dislodge something that weighs 200,000 metric tons and is 1,300 feet long.  And from what I've read they may have to set up a barge and with a crane take off these containers one by one.   Not only will something like this take weeks, but they may not have the infrastructure.  Apparently emptying these ballast tanks isn't going to work and could destabilize the ship.   Needless to say this is a complete nightmare and won't be over anytime soon.

I would think for $400m an hour, they would ask for 10 missile strikes and blow the crap out of it.  It'd be easier to pick up the pieces.

... Also, I read they tried using 8 tug boats.  I wonder about the pulling capacity of one tug boat in the water, versus .. a bulldozer on land.    I would think the bulldozer would have a much larger pulling force.

I've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express before, so I know what I'm talking about.

They should let the IDF go kick some Egyptian Army ass. Nothing clears out the Suez Canal faster than an Arab-Israeli War!

Would expanding the canal around it be the best call now?

I'm guessing that would take longer than dislodging the ship....

I first became familiar with Juan Browne during the Oroville Dam crisis when my son was out there for FEMA.  He's a pilot by trade but has done a great job analyzing engineering disasters such at this.  I hope you find it interesting and educational.

Thanks for posting. More information that anything I have seen this week.

Fascinating that there is only one engine powering the ship.

Bam!!  Great job by all of those involved and were able to make this happen.

MuggsyB

Oh....wait.  It's not over yet.

Just for fun, you can now try to steer your own ship through the canal. I ran aground my first try....

Great.  Boats are not competing in the "Ever Given Challenge" to get noticed...

Reminds me of doing donuts in parking lots as a teenager. Rear wheel drive did have its advantages...
