Over/Under number of seasons losses until the bitching starts again?

I'll go with 1.5

I mostly agree. They were on the edge of the cliff. The article may have been the breeze that nudged it over the edge..

MU would have been working on the buyout details/cash prior to yesterday. It was a coincidence.

And you know this how?
Jeez.

Read the press release, folks.

Right. This isn't a decision that gets made in 24 hours because of a blog post.

I give MU credit for making the move. Now the hard part starts. I sure hope they make the right hire.

Goose,

Would you prefer an assistant or an established coach - maybe from a mid-major?

Personally, I don't really care. Every successful head coach was once an assistant. I want a guy who has a defined system and who can recruit to that system.

While you're definitely right, it sure is a fun coincidence.

Jeez.

Read the press release, folks.

I wouldn't expect the press release to say "We've been working behind the scenes for weeks to secure a coach who's currently under contract with another university."
What is in there is pretty standard language.
I'd speculate that:
A) There isn't a new coach in place right now
B) Bill Scholl has a short list of candidates in mind, and has reason to believe that under the right circumstances the interest would be mutual.

It means that they are preparing for the inevitable sh*tstorm that is coming from the University community that has fewer students and is cutting employees.  Beyond that, I have no idea what it means because the University can allocate its resources however it wants.

Have to think this has to do with the things people have been saying about the optics of such a move and the fact that the school is letting go its highest paid employee and buying them out while simultaneously cutting educational staff.  Saying that the Educational staff dollars aren't going to cover this buyout.

Good question and really do not have an answer. This is a big hire and I would look at as many candidates as possible. I will be watching closely.

My guess is it is coming from the Blue and Gold fund that must have just gotten a large donation.

Yeah because donations to cover direct compensation wouldn't be tax deductible.

Big Papi

It was going to be brutal next year with fans in the stands.  Even if they didn't want to make the move, they were left with no other choice.  Its going to hurt but it had to be done.

They have to get this hire right.  Its not like we were consistently finishing in the top 3 and we fired a guy.  Wojo set the bar low.  I have to believe we can hire a coach that at least provides similar results.  Hopefully the new coach takes it up a notch or two.

Big time donors stepped up to pay the buyout.  Hopefully they step up and pay for a high end coach.  I don't want an assistant coach.  I want a proven commodity.

You're far more optimistic than me. I'll go with "when it seems to be taking too long to hire his replacement."

"The university will immediately begin a national search for the next head men's basketball coach immediately."

Does using the double "immediately" actually operate as a portal in the space-time continuum and suggest that they've already hired Wojo's replacement?

We have gone the assistant route for a long time. I say lets try and get real HC with experience.

Thank you to all of the hard work Wojo and staff put in to our program these last seven years.  As stated repeatedly, wonderful ambassador for Marquette and to the program.  Will root for him at whatever his next stop will be.

Bittersweet day.  Brighter days ahead for Marquette.

And fluffy told us all that this was never going to happen.

I never understand why people give other so much sh!t for sharing info when at the same time we're all begging for inside info

Today is a good day!!!

Silent Verbal

Here's a question:  Was it the Georgetown game that did it?  A lot of folks said one game wouldn't determine whether or not Wojo would be here next year.  But losing that game to an inferior program, and in the fashion we lost, may have tipped the scales.

I wonder if Wojo would still be here if we'd won that game.  Life and fortune hang on some pretty slender threads.

Avenue Commons

I understand the desire for MU to be more competitive. But I don't get the vitriol towards Wojo. He worked hard, recruited well, and was a great ambassador for Marquette. We were ranked for good chunks of his tenure with some amazing recuits like Ellenson and Garcia and the development of Markus. I'll always wonder "what could have been" last year if Joey and Sam stayed and Covid doesn't happen and cancel tourney. We were on our way to the tourney last year even without them. We can all agree on his failures in regards to the tourney. But to shoot fire at the guy is something I don't understand.
