Why would we retire Markus' number?  We didn't win a single tournament game during his time here.  Never won a conference title.  Yes, he's our all-time leading scorer, but in today's game, all that really means is he wasn't able to go pro early because he was undersized for the position he played.  Jerel McNeal was our leading scorer before Markus.  Should we retire his number, too?

All time leading scorer and two time all American. BE player of the year.

Pretty obvious choice.

Instead of retiring jerseys, I'd suggest Marquette adopt something akin to a ring of honor.  Not sure that's doable at Fiserv but maybe something to look into

Kind of surprised Chones jersey isn't retired even though he was only with MU for what, two seasons? MH for sure. I would definitely lean toward Diener as a really stout 4-year guy, and Jerel too, especially-so considering where he sits in all-time scoring.

Nah, he played on the freshman team. Then, 1.8 seasons thereafter, hey?

Every school does it differently. Georgetown has no numbers retired, Duke has 13, (leaving just 23 possible numbers among its roster).

North Carolina has the best formula.

As Doc said, one season of freshman ball and 1.8 on the big team. All told, he played 51 varsity games. We won 50 of them. The 1 game we lost was stolen by the officials - only game Meminger ever fouled out, 3 or 4 of the fouls offensive, the last 2 blatant flops - and we lose by 1.

Yes, but zero team success, aside from finishing "alone in second" in the Big East his junior year.  Does team success count for nothing?

Nope, just a single category that he happened to be very very good at.

Didn't they dedicate a "HANK" banner for Raymonds? Could do the same for Markus, but put "CANCER" on it.

Maybe they will hang PPT TIGER for our current coach

Count for nothing? No. It's a factor. But when you add in two time All-American, Big East POY, and All-Time leading scorer in the Big East I think he passes the threshold IMHO

Nobody you named, and I'm as big a Diener fan as you can get.  But there isn't an AA or even conference POY in that mix.  Markus will rightfully go in the rafters, but that's about it

Jerel was a second team AA.

They made two NCAA tournaments and would have made a third.

Stop it. You are embarrassing yourself. Two players left and no one followed them out the door. So the ten who stayed showed who was the problem.

Simply making the NCAA Tournament should not be seen as a great accomplishment for a program like Marquette.  It's become that under Wojo, though.

I agree. But let's not act like the team was trash.
