He reminds me of Maurice Lucas. I thought this before he hit the last second shot to beat UW. Wojo should of danced on the scorers table like Al did.
I was a freshmen when Lucas was a freshmen.

He has a way to go match Luke, but I think some similarities can be seen. Physical presence and demeanor have similar looks. Lets hope he has as much success as Luke, both at MU and beyond.

I’m not ready to mention Lewis in the same breath as Lucas just yet.

Maybe a slightly better version of Damon Key at this point, with potential to be even better.

Agreed. And if he does end up somewhere between Key and Lucas, we will have a lot of fun watching him develop.

I think people are underestimating the amount of preparation that is put into game plans and scouting reports.  Trust me, Justin Lewis's skillset was well known by the Badgers, coaching staff and players alike.  He was not some footnote on the scouting report.  They didn't just ignore him because he was "only" ranked in the bottom half of the top 100.

Xavier Tillman.   With a better jump shot.

Totally agree. Maybe if Lewis had played only 2 minutes in the first 3 games and surprised them, it would be one thing. But he played 15, 20 and 22 minutes, with his PT increasing every game. 10-8 in 20 min vs EIU and 6-13 in 22 min vs OSU. Gard had a book on him to be sure. But yes, future opponents have an even bigger book on him now!

Like Tillman as a junior, though.

X did little as a freshman.

Tillman as a junior was B1G defensive player of the year.     Like all young MSU players, he had to earn his time as a freshman.

Luke was a beast. Way too early for that comparison.

#20 was a beast and one of the all time best. I agree that Lewis has a long way to go to be in that conversation. Luke was great at MU and even a better pro.

I am a fan of JFL.   But we have already seen opposing coaches plan for and make adjustments for Garcia.   Lewis is now moving up the scouting report.  He has shown great promise and I am impressed.   But now it is adjustment and counter adjustment time.
One of the reasons I am bullish on JFL is he is fundamentally strong in many different aspects of the game . Because he is a multi dimensional player With a great body ,  he can fit into what ever role is needed for the team to win. The kid has a great heart and wonderful team ethic which shows in the court . Add in Very coachable and high IQ player. It all points to a lot of promise and upside for this young man .

In his day he was. As I remember it Lucas weighed 220lbs and in his day that was big for 6'8" player. Lewis is listed as weighing 235 lbs., which is not big in todays game. Lewis is bigger, but he does not look as big as Lucas did, because the game has changed with weight training.
They are similar in size and athleticism. Lucas looked meaner. We also watched Lucas play as a sophomore and junior. Lucas's freshmen year was the last year freshmen were not eligible.

He was a stud in the ABA and NBA. That 76-77 Trail Blazers team, with Lucas and Walton in the front court at the top of their games, was pretty special.

Luke in his prime and Walton before his knees finally gave out. That was quite a frontline!

Actually similar to Justin's game - only he was a better player.

He played out high and hit a lot of junpers from the top of the circle. He also never looked rushed or panicked, which is another attribute of Lewis.

He also played on my fave frontcourt ever for MU with Bo Ellis and Earl Tatum.

Bo, Luke and Tatum is why we talk about the past on here. Three all time greats.

Let Justin Lewis be Justin Lewis and carve his own history at Marquette instead of shoehorning him into a past player

Absolutely, and those defensive adjustments will create opportunities for others to take advantage of. I suspect we will see the benefits of more balanced usage than we had the past couple years as the season progresses.

Hey, Rico. Let us old guys reminisce about the past. We have nothing else to fill the time in our lives.  ;)
