Lewis is a dominant player. He's an easy 6'8" or 6'9". Marquette needs to update their player roster heights, like the Badgers do yearly.

I'm trying to think of our last buzzer beater.  Anyone?  Hauser v. Creighton but that was to force OT; not to win.

Do we retire #5 before the next game or do we wait until the season’s over?
Title: Re: Lewis, baby!!
Post by: skianth16 on December 04, 2020, 08:28:22 PM
If the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores, I can't wait to see what we get from Lewis in the next few years. I know Carton and Garcia were getting some attention for Big East newcomer of year, but at this pace, you've got to think Lewis will have his name in the conversation now.

Best ever was Jerome Whitehead vs UNCC.

Best regular season was Doc Rivers vs ND.

Oops - I misread your post to say our ‘best’ buzzer-beater. Oh, well.

In the absence of Tower’s postgame I’ll put thoughts here. That was a great game start to finish. I thought the defense shined most of all. Lewis played like the best player on the floor for nearly the entire half.

Wojo did not take timeouts at the end of the game and it worked out. I would’ve called the timeout, but I can’t criticize when it works out. Great win, and I hope for more of the same. We have seen signature wins during the Wojo era which have led to nothing. Let’s we if it’s different this time.

Also, not to diminish the win, but how in the hell was Wisconsin in the Top 5???

2004. Louisville.
Freshman Dameon Mason, who was standing all by himself in the left corner. Scott Merritt found Mason, who drilled the baseline jumper, as the buzzer sounded. Fouled on the play. Put like 0.7 back on the clock. Made the free throw on Senior Day. I believe it was 81-80.

CBS game with Kevin Harlin and Dan Bonner. I keep the VCR, cause I taped the game. I can't believe it's not on youtube.

I have feelings and I'm comfortable with that.

After he blocked Potter's shot, I said to my wife: "I definitely have a man-crush on Justin Lewis."

I was standing in our family room as DJ shot the FTs. After Justin's tip settled into the basket, I jumped up, screamed, landed on the floor and did a somersault. I am too effen old for this; will be sore in the morning.

Best late MU shot I saw in person: Rivers' heave to beat ND.

That's my all-time fave Marquette shot because I was there and because I hate ND, but like anybody else, I know that Whitehead's shot was the biggest in Marquette history.

As others have noted, Vander's against Davidson wasn't technically a buzzer-beater because there was still time on the clock, but if that doesn't go in we lose a first-round NCAA game to a 14-seed, so by definition it was huger than huge. His winner against St. John's for our only Big East title was right there.

Junior's long 3-pointer to tie against UConn in our 2013 BEast opener (and our subsequent OT win) set the tone for our entire conference championship season.

Hauser's shot at Creighton that sent us into OT ... sensational, obviously.

Novak vs. ND, as others pointed out. Wasn't a "walk-off" but was spectacular.

And of course this one by Justin, against evil Madison.

My Final Four:

1. Whitehead ... 2. Vander (v Davidson) ... 3. Rivers ... 4. Justin.

2020 has obviously sucked big time, but this was one of the highlights for me at least. MU winning always ranks #1 for me in my sports fan hierarchy, and this was a great basketball game. To win this game the way MU did, against their biggest rival, this is awesome. It was great to feel that type of adrenaline high again.

Not saying the game would’ve played out exactly the same if there’d been fans, but man, if it had...that Lewis tip in would’ve been up there with the loudest moments in MU home court history.  Even sweeter because we would’ve been able to see the looks of agony on Badger fans’ faces.

Lazar was a pretty darn good 4 year starter. The phrase “what Lazar would’ve been“ sounds like you think JL2 is already better? I think Lewis is stronger and plays bigger than Lazar, more ala JFB with his work around the bucket. However, I think Lazar is the better shooter, midrange, long range, and creating his own. If JL2 matches that HES heading to the NBA

Slight nitpick...I know the announcers aren’t in the building, but Steve Lavin should have let that moment breathe a little bit on the call at the end of the game. Between the popcorn comment and then immediately talking after the tip in, it’s the only thing that ever so slightly bugs me (having re-watched the clip an unscientific 7,389 times already).

I think Lewis has served as a slightly les undersized center and power forward. But so far shown a remarkable rebound, and block ability. Lazar wasn't called to score much his freshman year Lewis will be so that's a tough comparison, but I have major blue and gold colored glasses for Lazar as my favorite or second favorite MU player in my 11yrs and I stand by my prediction.

JFL has the most upside of any player in our program since JFB

JFL can so many things well, has a Big East body and plays smart and with passion.

The reason I think his ceiling is so huge is that he will keep improving with experience . The foundation and fundamentals are strong. The kid values winning.

We do agree on MU ball a fair amount, I will admit that.

IMO Lewis has some traits of one my all time favorite Warriors, David Boone. Lewis looks to be far better offensively (range) and a better athlete, but some similar traits to Boone

I have to say that he also reminds me of two "old" time players, Robert Parrish and Sam Perkins. The comparison here is completely based off how stoic the kid is. It is very refreshing to see his on court demeanor.

You could see Lewis was going to be good from all of the minutes he had in earlier games. That said, you just don't expect a freshman to have the strength, intelligence and confidence to play as he did against a very good Senior laden Wisconsin front line. Lewis was used to winning big games in high school. It is clear he intends to make sure the winning continues. Love this kid!

Also, please give WOJO some credit. His management of substitutions allowed us to maintain wall-to-wall defensive intensity. We actually managed to get a very well coached Wisconsin team to play out of character.

I was struck by his poise. It was a late basket that he had that got me really excited. Noticed he had a mismatch and took his guy to the post and called for the ball. There he calmly backed him down and put in a short shot. Seemed way more mature than a Freshman.

ETA: Looks like BLM had this thought awhile ago in the Road Kill thread.

Look, can we all agree Lewis did not actually tip the ball in?  He glared at it, snarled, growled  “get in” and then pointed at the basket in mid air.   That is the way my scotch and I will remember it anyway.

I loved David Boone’s game!   He had such great body awareness and positioning that he was a beast inside as well as a good mid range and even long range game.  I always thought if he were blessed with just a bit more height, he would have had a great NBA career.  I think he was only 6-5 but played like he was 6-9.  I may be a bit off on the specifics.

As time goes on, Lewis can be an interesting study in recruiting rankings.

Might he end up being better than Garcia? How many top 10-20 players might he end up being better than? A few? Several? None? We don't know, but we do know that players are "mis-ranked" all the time.

Is there any objective observer who watched last night's game and didn't come away thinking that Lewis already is a better all-around player, and much better prospect, than any Madison big?

I think Lewis will clearly be a better player than Davante.

My question was only about being a low post scoring skills. Kind of a lost art. Coaches want bigs now who can hit the outside shot. Many don't ever develop a low post game. Lewis appears to have both.

JFL's recruiting ranking may have played a big role in our win last night.  As he was draining threes and making good post moves, grabbing boards, and blocking shots, the Wisconsin coaching staff was probably wondering what the hell was going on.  There's not much film on him yet and unlike Carton and Garcia, I doubt he was a big part of UW's scouting report on us.  This game was his coming out party, and an increased focus on stopping him may help Garcia get going offensively.

Second straight opponent to do a good job on Garcia, but DJ did whatever he wanted. Only one who stopped him was DJ. Trice sure as hell didn’t.

Justin showed a pretty good amount of what he could do our first 3 games. If Gard ignored that ... shame on him and good for us!

I never thought Haanif had a ton of upside.  He was a 6'5 slasher who couldn't shoot from the outside consistently and had zero right hand, which was his biggest detriment.  Lewis is a big man with a good looking shot who also seems like he enjoys doing the dirty work.  And, unlike some big men who can shoot the 3, he's not in love with it.  What I'm saying is, he looks like he'll be very coachable.

Agree with your point, though.

Haani had incredible potential and had he stuck around, was the kind of player that could have helped stop the 18-19 end of season slide (he would have been a SR.).  Was primarily a slasher but made 38% of his three's his Freshman year on over 2 attempts per game (so lack of outside shot is a myth).  Also averaged more ppg in conference than for the season (12.3 to 11.8) so only performed against lower competition is also a myth.  The problem was that he wasn't a great defender (never posted a Drtg below 103, and that was at FGCU against lower competition), and he failed to develop his right hand.  He would have been a solid 4 year player had he stuck around.  Think Lewis' ceiling is higher, but agree that it is far to early to be anointing him anything yet.

Yes and no. As a frosh, his numbers actually went up slightly in the BE. His overall scoring average was 11.8 ppg, but he averaged 12.3 ppg in conference. There was also a very slight uptick in his rebounding. As a sophomore, his numbers went down as the season progressed into the BE.

I think people are underestimating the amount of preparation that is put into game plans and scouting reports.  Trust me, Justin Lewis's skillset was well known by the Badgers, coaching staff and players alike.  He was not some footnote on the scouting report.  They didn't just ignore him because he was "only" ranked in the bottom half of the top 100.

Totally agree. Maybe if Lewis had played only 2 minutes in the first 3 games and surprised them, it would be one thing. But he played 15, 20 and 22 minutes, with his PT increasing every game. 10-8 in 20 min vs EIU and 6-13 in 22 min vs OSU. Gard had a book on him to be sure. But yes, future opponents have an even bigger book on him now!

One of the reasons I am bullish on JFL is he is fundamentally strong in many different aspects of the game . Because he is a multi dimensional player With a great body ,  he can fit into what ever role is needed for the team to win. The kid has a great heart and wonderful team ethic which shows in the court . Add in Very coachable and high IQ player. It all points to a lot of promise and upside for this young man .

In his day he was. As I remember it Lucas weighed 220lbs and in his day that was big for 6'8" player. Lewis is listed as weighing 235 lbs., which is not big in todays game. Lewis is bigger, but he does not look as big as Lucas did, because the game has changed with weight training.
They are similar in size and athleticism. Lucas looked meaner. We also watched Lucas play as a sophomore and junior. Lucas's freshmen year was the last year freshmen were not eligible.

Actually similar to Justin's game - only he was a better player.

He played out high and hit a lot of junpers from the top of the circle. He also never looked rushed or panicked, which is another attribute of Lewis.
