Quote from: MuggsyB on June 07, 2025, 02:50:52 PMWhat?  Great kid with wonderful parents.  And a great attitude on tbe court.

Chris Evert is a terrible commentator.  Davenport is far, far, far, better.

Yeah, something about her bugs me.  I can't put my finger on it.  I miss Lindsay Davenport, too.  I think she was better than Serena

Coco played well most of the match, and her demeanor and focus was great. But Sabalenka's inability to control her emotions - and lots of her shots - doomed her.

She could have been more gracious afterward, but she wasn't wrong about how she played.

And I laughed when she said she'd recover emotionally by going to Mykonos to indulge in "tequila, gummy bears, and swimming."

Lindsey wasn't swift of foot but could unload from the baseline.  Serena's serve was so much better than anyone ever in the women's game.  Whether it be then, before her time, or now.  Gauff can be dominant if she improves her serve.  Tremendous wheels and defensive skills.  My take is Serena is the goat but not on clay.  People seem to forget that had Seles nor been stabbed, she likely wins another 6-10 slams and probably 4 more French O's.  Incredible consistency.  When she had time she didn't miss and punished the ball all directions.

I laughed when she blamed the conditions, how bad she played, and that Coco was framing the ball a lot.  What a bunch of garbage.  Could have been more gracious?  Inexcusable conduct.  Maybe the Kraken is lurking off of Mykonos?  There's a reason she had a slew of unforced errors.  Coco didn't exactly play her A game either.

What nationality was Seles?  That'll remind me if I like her or not

She was affected more by the wind, due to her high ball toss, but tough nuggies. And the stuff about how lucky Gauff was ... idiotic. But again, she was right that she didn't play anywhere near as well as she had been. She let her emotions get the better of her; Coco stayed cool and deserved to win.

We should be cheering more for Pegula. I don't see Gauff's family bringing joy to millions by owning an NFL team

That's fine and it happens.  Sometimes you don't play as well as you did in other matches during the tournament.  When Nadal beat Fed 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 in the French Ooen final did Roger say after the match "that was my worst performance ever"?  She thought she was going to roll Coco at 4-1, 40 love, in the 1st set. Instead, Gauff found her game, extended the rallies, and Sabalenka got pissed because she couldn't win points quickly.  This is why she had so many UE's and this has always been her pattern.  Now she can get away with it on faster surfaces, especially because of free service points, but not on the clay.  Gauff earned the win and Sabalenka's meltdown and comments were embarrassing imo.

MuggsyB

And I'll you something else:  She wasn't just throwing mini tantrums on points with shots that  she butchered.  She was moaning and bitching after literally every point in late 2nd and 3rd set. So if Coco ran down six shots, took control, and laced a winner, Sabalenka would act like she missed a duck overhead.  That's when I had enough.

Sablenka is from Belarus, one of our greatest allies.

IT'S TIME!  If Alcaraz is going to win this match he must get out of the gates quickly.  Sinner is playing so consistently (with Mammoth power) it's freaking scary.  Carlos must usurp this match from the first point.  Especially his service games, he's been a little off. Focus, unload on the forehand, use the dropper effectively, and finish points at the net.  Vamos Carlos!

You shouldn't be defending her.  She also said additional idiotic things I didn't hear yesterday like "Iga would have beaten her" and blah, blah, blah, blah. I only went 4/10 with my rant.  If she does this crap again at Wimbledon or the USOpen I will kick it up several notches.  She's a cry baby and a very poor sport.

Please don't. No one cares.

$2200 to get into the stadium for this one?  Are those the lowest priced seats?  Wow.

MuggsyB

Alcaraz needs to wake up.  Pretty sloppy misses thus far.

MuggsyB

Carlos has completely lost focus.  Extremely upsetting.

MuggsyB

This is absolutely phenomenal.  No matter what happens in the 5th set.  Tennis freaking rules!  Thank God these two have taken over the mantle fron the Big 3.

Carlos is inevitable

That was freaking epic!  You have to feel for Sinner but wow, what a match!  We're blessed to have seen that.

MU82

An all-timer.

5th major for Alcaraz, who just turned 22. Amazing comeback, with some incredible shot-making in the last 3 sets.

Devastating for Sinner. His poor mother - they kept showing her in the stands, watching her boy blow that lead.

I thought TNT's coverage throughout the 2 weeks was really good. And Brian Anderson and John McEnroe did a great job calling today's action ... although both were openly rooting for Alcaraz to win the third set. Minor nit: Well after the fact, Anderson again brought up the bad call that potentially cost Sinner a point. Sorry, but when you blow 3 straight championship points and a 2-0 lead in sets, nobody should dwell on one bad call. Otherwise, though, I thought both were sharp.

Truly a treat to watch, and Reminder No. 5,378 why all of us love sports so much.

That was a brutal missed call that shouldn't have occurred.  But Sinner handled it really well.  Maybe the most amazing stat of the tournament is that Sinner had a grand total of 2 double faults, zero today.   It's not like he's lobbing 60 mph serves either.  I thought Carlos didn't have a great serving day.  He wasn't going big much and then eventually went consistently to the kicker.  Both of these guys have power off the ground unlike anything we've seen.
